There may be more upside to this Giants' season

M.S. : 9/22/2020 10:40 am
Than the media pundits are assuming.

So far, the Giants have the worst rushing stats in the NFL and there isn't a close second (dead last in yards per game & yards per attempt.) And with Saquon Barkley out, things aren't exactly looking rosy.

But here are a few things to consider:

(1) The lack of a running game is an offensive line issue, not a Saquon Barkley issue;

(2) As the season progresses, and our front five acclimate themselves to one another, there is no where for our run game to go but up;

(3) Any positive development in our run game -- ANY -- represents a tremendous leverage point for this team;

(4) It will take the pressure off Daniel Jones, and not force him to pass so often (he's #10 right now in attempts);

(5) It will burn a little bit more of the clock, which will help a defense that's #4 in total yards allowed.

But it all boils down to generating some semblance of a respectable run game! It doesn't have to be great; not even good. But it has to move the needle from it's paltry 52 f-ing yards per game.

If that happens, this team can turn itself into a winner IMO this season!

Of course, the leverage works both ways. If Jason Garrett/Marc Colombo continue to oversee a failed run game, I don't see 5 wins.
It's a very small sample size...

but that Giants defense is statistically a top 1/3 defense in a lot of categories - total yards (4), passing yards (2), points against (11), yards per play (10), 1st downs allowed (3), sacks (9).

I get it - just looking for silver linings.
Immediately after the Steelers loss I was enraged about another

wasted season, a 1st game loss and a crappy ol. After this weeks loss I was encouraged by an OL coming together, a defense that may lack and edge rusher, but has other areas and the overall work ethic and never quite attitude. The offense has the QB talent I believe and if the OL continues to gel, i think you have a capable OC in Garret and OL coach in Columbo, that you'll have a top half Offense. As the season wears on and other teams see injuries we may catch them at the right time, which is something that maybe happening this week in SF. My biggest hope is that we can split with our division, at the least. I'd LOVE to sweep Philly but I'll take a split. same goes for Dallas. I think Rivera will have that team able to compete better so a sweep there will be tough. But as of now I am more positive than a week ago today even with Barkley done and Shepard out.
You think

Jones is going to pass less now?
Not to be a total downer

but no way do I see a top half offense. With what weapons? Golden Tate? Who the fark is running the ball?

And it's premature to be lauding the team for not giving up. We just played the second farking game. See if they're still fighting in game 15 when we're 2-12, 3-11. We've had teams just give up before (e.g., Fassel's 0-8 "run").
I would offer that you are seeing positivity because its week 2

And "there's no place to go but up" is much more palatable than considering that things could get worse over the next 14 weeks.
through two games the giants offense is one of the worst

in the NFL. there is slayton (maybe) and no one else.

other than dexter lawrence, no one gettleman has drafted on defense looks good.

there is not one unit on the team that is markedly better since gettleman took over GM duties and that includes DL. many look worse.

he can't retire soon enough.
This team will fight hard and improve as the season moves along

We will miss Saquon because teams focused on him but they won't focus on Dion Lewis, W. Gallman.

This year is about "learning" as we had no off-season of merit and new HC. Judge and staff will assess what they have and build on it as the season progesses.

1. OT - I think Thomas has the goods and has a learning curve. Can Peart supplant Fleming by season's end and play well?
2. OG - apparently Zeitler played fairly well in game 2, but can Lemiux challenge him or even Hernandez?
3. WR - we have Slayton who has potential and Tate who goes short. Then we have NOTHING....
4. QB - D. Jones can't turn the ball over. He just ha to stop. It isn't all his fault for sure but with 15 starts or so now he needs to show he can keep the ball in Giants hands.
5. DL - strength of the team but we lack a top end edge rusher to make things happen.

I was hopeful we'd start 0 - 4 but really take off in a bad division and finish 8-8 and perhaps compete for the division title in a year where 8-8 may win it!!! But Dallas comeback couple with our loss of Saquon just took the wind out of my sails. It hurts...

We need to win this week and show we belong in the division race. Build on a win.

The upside to this season is verifyiing our youth are ready for a 2021 run. I believe Saquon will be back to 100% by opening day 2021. I believe in D. Jones as a quality QB who has the intangibles.

If we finish with a top 3 pick let that top pick be a CB or ER of merit. We can't have a top pick who isn't a top end defender. We need a top end defender.
Let gallman get in there and tear it up

Then I look forward to picking apart the coaching staff as to why he’s been on the bench for 2 years
The running game
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/22/2020 1:06 pm : link
has been a problem since 2013. The offense needs that component. Look at the majority of QB's taking big steps in year 2 and the high percentage of times you will see a good running game.

Some teams get around it with a developed QB who has at least two top targets with a good pass blocking line. We don't have that and I think it is unfair to hold Jones to having great success at this point. Now him not holding in the ball.....no excuse for that.
Offensive line changes
Earl the goat : 9/22/2020 1:14 pm : link
Peart in for Fleming at RT
Lemieux in for Zeitler at RG
Kyle Murphy off PS in for Gates

It can’t get any worse

Let the kids gel
The only upside now

Would be to see Jones and the OL (hopefully) progress. And perhaps if Carter and Ximinez progress.

They're still gonna have to draft some (or bring in FA) pass rushers who are NOT "projects." And you could say the same for the DBs and some OLs.

Maybe drafting in the top 5 yet again will get it done this time.

A team that carries 4 TE, 1 FB, and only 5 WRs

is a team that is game planning to feature the running game, IMO. I don't think it has worked as they imagined through two games so they had to switch to passing more than they wanted; the question is can they stick with this gameplan with Barkley out or do they have to pass more?

And if they do pass more, i assume it will be out of heavier sets since they don't really have the personnel to spread it out.

you're magnificent. Most days you err on the side of doom and gloom yet today, it's time to be optimistic.

Thanks for giving me hope. Ill take it any way I can get it.
