Most mind boggling Giants game

BestFeature : 9/22/2020 4:25 pm
I'll leave it open ended and open to interpretation.

The one that I can think of is week 5 against the Browns in 2008. What everyone remembers is how dominant we looked until Burress went down, I think we were 10-1 (eventually went to 11-1 and then 12-4), but no one remembers that one loss. The Browns in 2008 were 4-12. Not only did the Giants lose they got their asses handed to them, I don't think the Browns punted once in that game. I still can't figure it out.

The 1988 Jets game
Greg from LI : 9/22/2020 6:34 pm : link
They had no business losing that game. Some nobody scrub had three sacks for the Jets and I think he had two in the rest of his career.

They somehow also lost twice to Vince Young as a starting QB.
2008 Cleveland game still a head scratched

but in my mind it was all about Shaun Rogers. Rogers was a monster in that game, I remember he gave O'Hara fits. CLE generated some pressure, Eli got picked a few times, as I recall, and we were just never in it.

Never gave the Giants a shot vs the 13 0 Broncos.
2002 vs Tennessee
Route 9 : 9/22/2020 6:40 pm : link
Fassel went for two early in the 4th quarter just to be up 28-14, they failed. The Giants kicked a late field goal which would've put them at 30 points if they had just kick the extra point.

Because the Giants failed the two point conversion attempt, this allowed Tennessee to only need a touchdown and a two-point conversion of their own to tie the score at 29-29.

Then OT. Titans win. What a moronic way to lose.

But their offense moved the ball at will as well. I'm not kidding when I say that they might have not punted all game.
Oh yeah. Duh. Both Philly road games under Shurmur.

Especially 2018. Holy shit, that guy should've never been a head coach for being so stupid. Philly had no business winning that game but once again thanks to the New York Giants stupidity they walk off the field with a win.

I'll just toss a positive one in: the 2007 playoff game vs. Dallas. Maybe it didn't seem like it at the time, but in retrospect, quite the mind-blower. Down to third-stringers in our secondary, Cowboys dominating yardage and time of possession, Corey Webster dropping a pick-six, Marion Barber running wild. This was the kind of game that the Giants seemed preordained to lose, especially after Dallas won the previous two matchups that year with relative ease. How they stayed in that game, let alone pulled off the W, still seems impossible.

Most will recall the onside kick going directly to Chris Calloway, hands guy, and his clanking it.

After the game, he was quoted as saying, "We can build on this."

was 1986, home loss to Seattle. We were just so good that year. We had a killer D, and the O punched people in the junk.

But, for some reason Simms had 4 picks in that game. I honestly don't remember much about it, other than not believing we lost.

We opened the season losing to Dallas. OK. Then we go on a tear and don't lose another game all season. Except that one to Seattle.

Seattle was 5-2 after that like us, so they were ok, but looking back at the schedule it was a classic trap game between the Eagles and 'Skins, two division opponents.

That L just floats there in the middle of that season like a turd in the punch bowl.

The Seahawks in 86 were the bet team in the NFL not to make the playoffs. They weren't scrubs. They were the only team to beat both Super Bowl participants in the 1986 season.

Season opener in Dallas in 2014 or 2015
bceagle05 : 9/22/2020 10:54 pm : link
when the Giants botched the game management at the end - trying to run the clock out instead of scoring to put the game on ice, and Eli throwing the ball away on third down instead of taking a sack to burn 40 seconds - screwed it up both ways. McAdoo was the OC at the time. The Cowboys predictably drove against our garbage D and Witten scored a TD with a few seconds left.
How about the 2012
Route 9 : 9/22/2020 11:08 pm : link
Season opener vs Dallas? of course leave it up to the Giants to be defending champions to look "anything not like" a team who was defending their championship, at home.

I think up until New England got blown out by Kansas City in 2017, the Giants were the only team to lose Week 1 at home in the kickoff game.

That was the worst for me; especially as a season ticket holder sitting in the stands. I still remember Phillips going for the pick and whiffing on the first Eagle touchdown and getting an uneasy feeling in my gut. Then they got the onside kick and I knew we were in trouble.

A lot of Fassel-era games definitely fit this description.

I always had the most confidence in the Giants against good teams back then - and I always felt like we were going to lose games we should have won.

It often seemed to go that way.

That 2015 Season was loaded with Heartbreaking Losses
LTIsTheGreatest : 9/23/2020 9:48 am : link
The opener in Dallas where clock management cost us the game.

The shootout in New Orleans where we actually took the lead with 7 minuteds left only to blow it at the end because of a face mask penalty on a punt.

The Jets game where we had the lead late only to let the Jets march down the field in the final 4 minutes for the tying TD and lose in OT

The Patriots game where Beckham could not hold on for a TD that would have forced the Pats to have to score a TD in the final 2 minutes instead of a FG to beat us.

Yep, good one. And Landon Collins dropped an easy pick on the final drive - looked like he had the ball secured, not sure how he even dropped it. Just a heave into the middle of the field by Brady.

LTIsTheGreatest : 9/23/2020 10:05 am : link
GIants needed to win to stay alive in playoff chase. After sleepwalking through the first half, came alive in the 2nd half and took the lead with a little over 2 minutes left, only to see the defense collapse and allow 10 points in the final 2 minutes go fall behind. Then very nearly stole the game on a last second lateral from Tiki To Ron Dixon who took it all the way down to the 4 yard line before being tackled by a lunging Bobby Taylor to fall just short. If Joe Jurevicius hadn't missed a block there, Dixon would have made it

...but one I remember is from 1995 versus Seattle, Giants lost 30-28.

Check out the boxscore:

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/199511050sea.htm

Notice Dan Reeves tried for a 2 pt conversion in the SECOND QUARTER twice (I guess the chart wasn't out yet lol). And one of those times he actually already had the lead lol

WTF.

That ended up being a huge difference in the game as Seattle kicked a late FG to win by two.

If there wasn't a fix in - then that was the most incompetent string of calls made in a long time, and that includes the Packers playoff game.

That game infuriated me like none other. If ever there was a fixed game it was that one. The shit they allowed the Rams to get away with while calling everything against us was absurd

Between a bunch of stupid ass penalties, some really terrible calls that went against them, and Feely's nightmarish game, they handed a win to a team they thoroughly outplayed. Osi went up against a future HOF tackle in Walter Jones and just flat out whipped his ass, and it was all for naught. Frank fuckin' Walker......god I hated that guy.

arcarsenal : 9/23/2020 8:08 pm : link
That Seattle game was brutal. We moved the ball between the 20's at will all day, but then we'd stall and have to settle for a kick and Feely was a fucking nightmare.

The 2011 game vs. Seattle was a weird one, too - we were driving down at the end to win it and Eli threw a ball inside the 10 to Cruz that kicked up off his foot, got picked off and taken back all the way for a TD the other way and we lost. I think Brandon Browner was the one who took it back the other way... literally like 95 yards. That was a horrible way to lose.

We demolished Seattle in 2010 - Shawn Andrews was really good that year for us when he played, but he was a weird dude and had back issues so he didn't last.

The flip side of that is the Giants are 5-0 all time in the NFCCG and the only team that can lay claim to that. That doesn't happen if you win a lot of playoff games without making the Super Bowl.

That's kind of the running joke about me with some of my friends - that I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday, but I can recall some of the most minute, random details of totally nondescript Giants games from many years ago.

I think it was Week 2 in 99 when we got absolutely demolished by the Redskins and fucking embarrassed by Stephen Davis.

I'm pretty sure that was the game where he ran directly into a pile, somehow squirted out without being tackled and ran all the way into the end zone for his 2nd or 3rd rush TD in the first half. It was a home game and an afternoon game - I just remember the crowd being almost silent like no one had any idea what just happened. They dropped 50 on us that day.

Jeremy Lincoln was also on that team. One of the worst CB's I've ever seen put a Giants uniform on in all the years I've watched them. He was awful.
