g1836 : 9/25/2020 10:39 am
Wondering if some can help me out with soem sugggetions. I am driving up to Mass. with my 4 yr old son from NJ. Looking for two things to break up the trip for him.

1. a place to eat. I usually stop for wings at archie moores in new haven. Looking for somehting different and i know there a a bunch of good restarasunts and pizza iunt hat area, i jus dont know shich ones (outdoor dining preferred).

2. Any outdoor attraction along the way in CT or RI, even i nice park to just get out of the car.

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I thought you meant the turnpike was closed because a 4 year old 2as wandering on the road.
Why are you taking 95?
pjcas18 : 9/25/2020 10:58 am : link
if you are married to 95 (I would not take it, but your call), the Wooster street pizza places (Pepe's and Sally's) are take out only and Sally's (maybe Pepe's too) has outdoor seating.

Modern (my favorite) is open for dine in, but has no outdoor seating.

If you want a nice place in RI, Roger Williams zoo/park in Providence is nice spot.

i second the above (pjcas)

pizza places and great weather the next 3 days. Can walk around Yale, get pizza, ice cream, etc. East Rock Park is also close, easy little hike and I believe there's playgrounds around it.

Walk around Yale. It's beautiful. I've done it multiple times when driving to MA, NH, ME.

and architecturally New Haven is an underrated city. So much in downtown NH from an individual building standpoint reminds me of Athens or Rome. In college for an art class we had to go to New Haven and match building designs to Athens buildings. So much you don't notice until you have to do something like that.

but not much for a 4 year old to do.

East Rock is decent and the drive up and view are cool, but it's been a while since I've been and I avoid it if possible. Just dumpy and sketchy. Like most of New Haven, it's not what it once was. Although that may have changed it's been a decade or more since I've been there.

Lots of good suggestions

I'd also look at Mystic. The Seaport is awesome, shops in town, great restaurants and of course the Aquarium. You likely have to check on if Aquarium has hours/restrictions.
I was at east rock a few months back

it was nice. Just realized its a 4 year old so ascending likely isn't an option. But there are playgrounds.

Lol, yup - me too.
Mystic Seaport has historic tall ships
sb from NYT Forum : 9/25/2020 11:40 am : link
..that might seem cool to a 4yo. Including the last surviving whaling ship. There are places to walk around also, but I think you might have to pay to access.

is very boring too for an adult and especially a kid (IMO) - I say this as a man who as a kid who took our school field trips there.

just my 2c - unless you go to the aquarium which is kind of cool.

In CT

If you don't want to stop in NH again. Pepe's also has a restaurant in Fairfield right off 95. There is Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, which is small and my kids used to love it. Also not far off of 95.

Once through NH the Seaport is cool, and would probably interest a 4 year old
If you stop in Mystic

I hesitated to click on this thread because I thought the same and wasn't ready to read about a potential tragedy. Ufff, glad it wasn't that. Lol

Great for little one's and plenty of choices for food, especially good seafood
How about the submarine museum in Groton

He may be too young but it’s a good place if it’s open. Tours of the Nautilus is this open (probably not)

I agree Mystic is suitable. Also right near Mystic (really part of the same town) is the old, historic part, Stonington village - on a peninsula going out into the Sound. I found Stonington very interesting and as I recall there is a park at the very end - the point - with space for a kid to run around and spectacular views of the water.

lol, sorry, people love Mystic it seems.

I hated it and if I was in the mind of a 4 year old and had to pick Mystic or Roger Williams park/zoo it's not close.

but again, I'm not taking 95 from Jersey to Massachusetts so none of these spots are convenient for me.

If I'm taking 684 to 84 and depending on the time you want to eat - I'd stop in Newtown, CT at the Blue Colony Diner.

great diner with a traditional diner menu and they bake their own desserts - cannoli, black and white cookies, big chocolate chip cookies - my kids loved it when we had to pass though the area. and they have outdoor seating.

Or there is a Pepe's pizza in Danbury or Waterbury depending on your timing. but not sure about outdoor seating - satellite locations not as good as Wooster street, but still good - better than 99% of the pizza anywhere else.

I definitely like Mystic, and actually I live in Newtown. Ha I can understand not liking Mystic, I just really like the pubs/restaurants and the aquarium is cool. I do however have to disagree on the diner, that is definitely nothing special... lol. Although you are right the bakery stuff is cool and they have those cake mice which are actually pretty good. Ferris acres creamery is in Newtown and definitely worth a stop if you like ice cream... I don't eat a ton of sweets though. Beer is my weakness.
Blue Colony
pjcas18 : 9/26/2020 4:46 pm : link
is just so convenient for me - coming from MA going anywhere - NYC, NJ, PA.

it's literally right off the highway and there is a gas station right next to it.

Plus, I'm a huge diner fan. And I have eaten at bad diners, maybe Blue Colony is nothing special, but it's reliable and as a parent traveling with kids if i happened to just venture in there I'd make note and make sure to go again (if it was convenient to my trip). Good food - everything from breakfast to sandwiches, to salads, and it has kid friendly foods and clean bathrooms.

I wouldn't make a special trip to go there, but as a convenient place to stop to eat, hard to beat it.
