Given 49ers injuries, the Giants cannot lose this game. I actually predicted them to win this week on our podcast, which was an audible from my original view of the season.
Daniel Jones must not make mistakes and get the ball too Slayton/Tate and Engram and those guys have to make some plays.
The defense should be able to stop the 49ers, with their top 2 backs out.

Giants can very easily lose this game and I expect them to do so.
i knew once they lost to the bears that this team stunk. but people are still optimistic.
that won't the case after this week. i expect the giants to lose and to lose by a good margin this week. this is where the wheels come off and there will be legitimate talk about the giants being one of if not the worst team in the league
But, the GIANTS are the acorn that becomes the oak!
I actually don't like the Giants vs. any professional football operation until they prove they can win a single game.
Backup QB or not, the 49ers are a system team and Mullens can play and knows the O. That stretch attack is tough to stop if you don't have great Edge players - and the Giants don't. It will also render our big interior guys less a factor. If the flood gates open up with the run, Mullens will easily pick us apart with play action passes.
On D, the 49ers are still dangerous without Bosa. Another tough test for the OLine.

They can definitely lose this game and normally would, but given the 49ers injuries, they have to win this game and need to win this game. However, overall, the team is in serious trouble and for the reasons we have discussed are still years away because of DGs missteps.
It sure does highlight the talent gap between us and contenders. They’re without a quarter of their starters including real impact players and we’re like “if we can win the turnover battle we can stay close and keep it from being a blowout.”
review. The biggest problem going forward is that as you note, it will be difficult to judge Jones given the paucity of remaining talent on offense. Right now, this looks like a three or four win team.
has a worse set of skill position players than the Giants right now?
One could argue the Jets.
We cover the Jets and Giants in my podcast, we have a guy from a Jets website on all the time and he is the internal optimist and even he now thinks they have the worst talent in the NFL, but a lot them are not ready to quit on Darnold.
heck, we lost with a stable of top end skill players
we were losing when we had OBJ and a healthy Saquon and Evan Engram and Shephard... these guys have talent.
Whether they are maximizing it and/or we are using it correctly is another story.
If Giants lose this game, turn out the lights on 2020/21.
the other team would be missing some key starters and everyone would say 'they should be able to beat them now!' Come game time you wouldn't know those players were back-ups and play like all-pros against the Giants. At least that's my perception over time.
Going to miss the game but very much expecting another loss, probably another close one like against the Bears. Only moral victory would be if Jones doesn't turn the ball over..
RE: Evwry person here saying giants are going to lose
after the last SB. We’ve gone from Super Bowl Champ in 2011 to a team hoping for a win against back ups?! Wow has the mighty fallen. I’m hoping the Defense Nd STs can step up this year and the Offense be at least average and avoid mistakes. The margin of error with this team is so small because we really have virtually no way to come from behind against the teams on this schedule. All I know is, regardless of the team on the other side, a win will go a long way for a team seeking confidence.
has a worse set of skill position players than the Giants right now?
The Washington Team comes to mind. Their TE is Logan Thomas, they have no one after Terry McLaurin at WR and JD McKissic and Peyton Barber at RB? I'll take Tate, Engram, Slayton, Freeman, Lewis over that cast of nothings.
I watch a ton of NFL every weekend, there is a paucity of really good offensive talent all over the league. It seems like the better teams are just loaded at skill spots and the stinkers aren't. Unfortunately it all starts up front so we have to settle the OL. This has to be counted as year 1 of the rebuild, which SUCKS but it's the way it is
So... you’re definitely not expecting a win Sunday?
Eric, you definitely managed to squeeze every drop of hope out of this season with this game preview. I’m beginning to see why you were hesitant to commit to BBI this year.
Hard to argue, though. It’s been a bad stretch for us.
To quote Dr. Zaius, "Don't look for it, Taylor. You may not like what you'll find."
There’s no spin this week. The Giants aren’t playing the niners, they’re playing a bunch of backups. If they don’t cruise this week the Giants likely won’t win a game this year.
RE: I can’t believe what has happened to this team over the past 9 years
after the last SB. We’ve gone from Super Bowl Champ in 2011 to a team hoping for a win against back ups?! Wow has the mighty fallen.
post-superbowl XLVI between 2012 and 2014 the giants lost nicks, jacobs, ballard, bradshaw, cruz, wilson, and the entire OL including baas. basically the whole offense minus eli. hard to recover from that. reese and ross were never able to make up for any of it other than odell, whose last good season was now 2016.
gettleman's overseen a very questionable rebuild since coming on and the crushing injuries to key players trend continues.
i fully expect a loss sunday but will watch and hope for a win as always.

Don't misunderstand me. IMO, things dramatically changed once Saquon suffered a potentially career-altering injury. That is one thing the Giants simply could not afford to have happen.
Even if the Giants could have made that one play and pulled off the win at Chicago, this rebuilding team has such a narrow margin for success that losing its one main playmaker makes any subsequent success even more difficult. I believe in Daniel Jones, but Colt off the bench would be a better scenario than no Saquon - or Shep for that matter.
I think it’s possible the Giants can muster up for a win Sunday and maybe a few more, but if the loss of an already limited offense’s best player doesn’t make the odds of success even more difficult, I don’t know what else to say. Except that as always, I’ll wake up Sunday hoping for a win. Do I expect any going forward? Yes! Do I expect any? Sadly, no.
This is the game we’ll see it. This is not a moral victory game either. They need to pick themselves out if the losing. If they can’t do it against a team as beat up as this, eyes turn to the offseason.
Rookie RB who Sy was also pretty high on before the draft. Could very well excel in Shanahan's offense and should see significant carries with all their RB injuries.

We've been in "year 1" of the rebuild for three years now.
I'm calling it: we win tomorrow. This is the NFL after all, the teams aren't that far apart and a team can't be missing that many players and win on the road.
who were not around when the Giants really sucked in the 60s and 70s, that when you're in the middle of long-term futility, it never seems like you'll ever get out of it.
But the Giants did, and so, too, will this current version of the team.
I think its a lot more fruitful (and much more uplifting) to focus NOT on what we are missing, but rather on what we have, and what we need to complement the decent players already on this team who are probably part of the solution.
Moreover, there are probably players on the current team, who may not necessarily look like part of the solution, but they are. In 1979, for example, a player like DE George Martin never really looked like part of the solution; neither did OT Brad Benson. Both were important players on the 1987 Super Bowl team.
Feel free to curse the upcoming games in which the Giants lose (and they will lose several), BUT KEEP THE FAITH!
But there will be signs of good tidings down the road. The OL will be just a tad more in sync; we won't have killer turnovers; the defensive line will play well against the run. A couple young players will show they understand assignments and play well.
But we won't create turnovers, sack the QB, or see many big plays. That's been our MO for years now, and nothing has changed that, and I think the front office knows it. They've been building from the inside out, focusing mostly on trench soldiers rather than calvary for the last couple of years. Once those units get solidified - and I think they might be by December - the focus will turn to playmakers on both sides of the ball.
as far as the general direction of this thread . Not only do I think that the Giants are on the right track , I also think this will soon be evidenced with some much-needed entries in the W column.
After ‘08 , I sounded the early clarion call that the roster was being thinned out . And, after ‘11 , there was the added concern of Mara deciding that he was not getting enough credit for the franchise’s success . He then put his Jerruh on , replicating the mistakes that his father had made .
This could have happened faster had Gettleman not gotten so many of his initial presumptions wrong . These include his assessment of Eli’s play , denying Manning’s diminished skills and willingness to take hits , as well as the preposterous assertion that the Giants could soon be competitive . Oh , and drafting Barkley , which was a mistake regardless of his rookie season highlight reel .
But that’s done, now . A Win tomorrow would work wonders . If it doesn’t happen , it will soon .

It's sad how low my expectations have fallen that I say with a straight face, 'Well hopefully we'll have meaningful games come Columbus Day weekend.'

2021 NFL Draft?
QB is the most important position on the field and Nick Mullens throws a lot of INTs.
Fans and foliage take heart.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo
DL Dee Ford
DL Nick Bosa
DL Solomon Thomas
RB Raheem Mostert
RB Tevin Coleman
TE George Kittle
LB Dre Greenlaw
CB Richard Sherman
And WR Deebo Samuel is out as well.
Not saying the Giants will win, but it is really depressing to think of losing to a team with so many stars missing.
Who wants to be a Giants star?
Win an f-ing game, please!

I hear ya, but I’ll be happy to worry about “who” we beat after the game.
Let’s just win THE game!
The worries can come after!
Sorry about that!
Sorry about that!
All good
The 49ers?
The Niners this week.
They’re staying in West Virginia at the Greenbrier. Best brunch ever. Fatten em up

Even with injuries, the talent level on the 9ers D is roughly comparable to the Giants’.
This will be close.
