NFT: Printer recommendations?

Matt M. : 9/25/2020 9:36 pm
I have a basic Epson all-in-one for home use (XP-400) that we've had for more than a few years now. It is about done. I would like to replace it with another wireless all-in-one, but I don't want to spend a ton. Current comparable Epsons are getting very spotty reviews.

Anybody have a relatively cheap recommendation (HP, Lexmark, Canon)? One problem is most models $150 and under are out of stock in most places.

I'm not using if for anything complex, so basics are OK, but must be wireless and must have a scanner. Cost of ink and lifespan of ink are also factors.
I don't use ink anymore.

Unless you use it often the ink will dry up and cause a bunch of problems. I've been through a few printers and that was always the main issue. I forgot what I have now but it isn't straight ink.

What do you use? Laser w/toner?
I will add o/ne complaint about Epson ink printers

When a color runs out, you can't use the print or copy functions at all, even in B&W.
I swear by

Canon. BUT you have to use their inks. The two caveats: it's expensive (but I don't mind, I like the results) and the obsolescence factor. By the latter I mean sometimes they stop updating their drivers, even if the printer still kicks ass. I'm hooked on Apple's ecosystem, and every time they update their operating system, I have to hope Canon does the same with their drivers. After a few years, they don't... which is a shame because if you keep using Canon inks, their printers can run forever. It just becomes a dedicated copier, scanner, and fax machine (or a big-ass paperweight) after several years, because it can't communicate properly to print after updating to the latest OS. So buy the most recent model you can get your hands on. I've also switched to the individual ink wells (buying individual ink bottles, to refill the canisters yourself)... which should be cheaper in the long run. But again, stick to Canon inks, you'll love it if you go this route.
I have liked Cannon’s too

Good quality, few issues.
Dump ink

Go with a Laser printer. Toner cartridges are powder-based and never dry out. No need to worry about clogged heads or expensive proprietary ink cartridge replacements. I bought a monochromatic Brother All in One Fax/Copier back in 2017 and I'm still on the original toner cartridge that came with the printer.

PS - If you don't need color printing, going with monochromatic will save you some money as well.
Another vote for Canon

Great printers. Been using the TS series the last few years. One of the few that still have a rear feed tray, which is great for labels, envelopes and photo paper.

You can get great deals on genuine ink for them on eBay.
I have had bad luck with Canon
sb from NYT Forum : 9/26/2020 1:52 am : link
...the ones I got have broken down pretty quickly and they burn through ink. And Canon ink is really expensive.

I got an Epson Ecotank on Black Friday and am really liking it. No wifi issues at all and we've not gone through half the ink since November 2019. And that's with two adults working from home and two kids using it for remote school.

Oh, and Epson ink is the same price as Canon and lasts way longer.

So, in sum, fuck Canon.
I've had a Brother for a number of years that works fine, but I don't

I have 2 Brother B&W Laser Printers for my office. Cheap and reliable.
got my daughter a Canon Pixma

so far, so good, she likes the ease to two-sided printing. I have an Epson: it serially 'updates' with various fax and other functionality that NEVER downloads successfully. Otherwise, ok with it
Thanks all. Still shopping.

It's tough to find decent models that aren't crazily priced that are in stock.

sb - I hadn't looked into the ectotank Epsons yet. I would have guessed they werre worse on ink. Are they similar to the other Epsons where if 1 color cartridge is empty, you can't print, even if you want B&W.
Both Chrome and Firefox have a Print to PDF add-on available

For myself, I don't see much use for a printer anymore. The PDF on my phone is better than dealing with paper.
Just one pitch for Epson

We got the Epson EcoTank ET-2750 Wireless Color All-in-One about 2 years ago and have never looked back. Works great and very economical.
Brother color asers keep getting the highest rating for value and

ink replacement costs -- in fact the Brother toner knock offs can get you a full set of toners cartridges for less than $50
I replaced an inkjet with a laser printer for grad school...

After using a canon pixma inkjet for my first a couple of weeks, I realized the cartridges were going to be too expensive to keep up with all the printing. The Xerox Workcentre 3215all-in-one I purchased ($149 on amazon at the time) has been awesome.

It was a little bit of a pain to setup, but once I got the wifi stuff figured out, it's been flawless for 2+ years now. It's fast for both sheet feeding duplex scans and printing.

The EcoTank is the ONLY way to go. 4,000 pages B&W and 6,500 color on one fill.
I got a cheap printer with HP Instant Ink
moze1021 : 9/26/2020 8:12 pm : link
Subscription service, they send me ink when I need it. I can print a certain number of pages per month and never have to worry about the ink.
Love it.
Thanks all.

Looking at the Epson ecotanks now.
Went with an Ecotank Epson model
Matt M. : 9/29/2020 8:12 pm : link
2 days in and I really like it. Only slightly bigger than my last Epson with better print quality and faster print and scan times.

Thank you all.
