NFT: Baseball question I should know the answer to...but don't..

mpinmaine : 9/26/2020 8:32 am
Pitcher allows zero hits or walks in a complete game.

However, one batter reaches first on a passed ball while striking out.

Batter steals second and gets to third on error.

Batter scores on sacrifice fly ball.

Pitchers team loses 1-0.

Does pitcher get credit for a perfect game?

Is it a no hitter?

Is it anything?

If he was pitching for the home team. A requirement is that the pitcher go at least 9 innings.
First, no perfect game

No batter can reach base for a perfect game. Second, no no-hitter either. They changed the rules a number of years ago. Less than a full 9 doesn't qualify and this scenario would fall short. Essentially, you need a decision and at least 9 full. The only thing I'm not sure of, is if this scenario took place in extra innings, so a full 9, plus was thrown in a CG.

I know Andy Hawkins on the Yankees threw a no-hitter in 1990, I think in Chicago. A young Jim Leyritz committed an error playing LF. With walks and I think another error, they lost 4-0. It was originally ruled a no-hitter. A year later Fay Vincent changed the rules. It was complete game on the road,so only 8 full innings and thus the no-hitter taken away.
good point

A perfect game is 27 up and 27 down

with nobody reaching at all, correct?
If a batter reaches first on the strike out passed ball or wild pitch
djm : 9/26/2020 10:51 am : link
Is that considered an error? Is a WP or PB always scored as an error? I never bothered to think of this before. Feel dumb now.

basicly he walked the first batter and was then thrown out of the game. The next pitcher came in to watch the runner get thrown out at second base and then retired the next 26 batters. Was at first considered a combined perfect game and then changed to a combined no hitter.
Pitcher gets nothing except a complete game loss

A couple of commissioners ago it was decided that to get credit for a no-hitter, the game had to be a complete game shutout.

A couple of games involving the Yankees came off the books as a result of that rule. Andy Hawkins pitched 8 no hit innings for a game the Yankees lost 4 - 0 . Melido Perez pitched a "no hitter" against the Yankees in a 5 inning rain shorted game.

At a game I was at Yankee stadium for, I saw history repeat itself in a sense. Al Leiter was the starting pitcher for the Yanks. The first batter of the game hit a line drive that struck Lieter, went for a base hit and knocked him out of the game. Neil Allen relieves. He then finished the game retiring 27 batters without giving up a run ( although he did give up hits). There was debate at the time whether Allen would be credited with a complete game shutout.
