Justin Herbert and the Chargers on now.

BlueLou'sBack : 10/12/2020 8:43 pm
If he were available last year and 6 overall, like he was this year, I'd have preferred him over Daniel Jones.

IMO his college tape was better. Chance to watch him now vs a pretty good Saints defense.
we should have waited a year

there was no necessity to draft a qb in a weak qb draft.
Whoever is playing OLT for the Chargers
BlueLou'sBack : 10/12/2020 8:48 pm : link
just got beat like a drum. As bad or worse as any play by Thomas yesterday, the Saints ER (Hendricks?) was all over Herbert, on a third and 12 situation, in less than 2 seconds I think.

Did he fumble?
Wow

He couldn’t convert that 3rd down. Get sacked.
I like Herbert

Like him in college too. But he looks like most young QBs... bird dogs his receivers and when under pressure he makes mistakes and doesn’t see the whole field.

Whatever Jones is or isn’t, it’s tough to tell with the personnel around him
Pressure 6 of 9 times

And they still scored a TD!! What a concept when defenses blitz they leave the secondary Wo help
Sigh, Herbert looks like a player

Their were very few Herbert
RAIN : 10/12/2020 9:08 pm : link
admirers here. He's in an ideal situation in San Diego, with good receivers and players that know the system.

I thought he underperformed in college and came up small in big games, and was a bit aloof. His physical skills are impressive, but so are Jones (if he can hold onto the ball).

Jones is in the worst possible situation right now, and the simplistic interpretations here are a bit much. Proclamations with Herbert and his 3 games against Carolina, Tampa, and New Orleans are early and his team lost. Kinda like Jones..

Larger sample set will bear this out.
I loved him

I thought if he came out he could be the #1 pick that year, super talented.

Really? Herbert is missing 3 starters on the OL, his best running back and his best receiver. Result: he took his team down the field for a td.

Sometimes, the qb has to make plays. Herbert has been doing that; ours has not.
He’s up 13-3 on New Orleans right now
Oscar : 10/12/2020 9:14 pm : link
He hasn’t lost. I don’t follow Oregon but apparently their coach is trash and didn’t run things to take advantage of Herbert’s considerable talent. I buy that based on what I’ve seen so far he looks awesome.

Seriously, is this Saints secondary as bad as Dallas's secondary?

What
Jon in NYC : 10/12/2020 9:29 pm : link
the Chargers are doing is smart. Keep him in shotgun, a lot of screens, a lot of quick passes, and only an occasional shot downfield.

Instead we're having Jones throw 5-10 yard curl routes for eternity where no one is open.
But was Gettleman in full bloom love with Herbert?

Didn’t Jones have multiple games with 5 TDS last season? Wasn’t there something about being only rookie to ever do that.

The narratives being created about Jones on these two posts, would be a bit more effective if they were a little more objective.
This shit is silly at this point
LG in NYC : 10/12/2020 9:38 pm : link
People are either intentionally being obnoxious or it’s just their nature but to act like Jones didn’t put up some incredible numbers much of last year is just intellectually dishonest.

It’s a lose lose proposition on this board, because posters make the same exact arguments for other teams, but not the Giants.

Herbert is doing things Jones did last season, and hasn’t won a game yet. But hey, let’s blame our GM.

Right now Yes. Plus the Chargers have better skill players. The Saints are rolling on their name right now. The secondary is a mess and Brees is starting his December play to start the Season now. He needs to hang it up.

The Jets’ failure of Darnold is almost the exact same as the Giants’ failure of Jones. They both drafted QBs, then did catastrophically bad jobs of surrounding those players with offensive linemen and skill position players.
I still like Darnold

Define "much". He had three big games against terrible defenses and was mediocre to bad in the other nine games.

lax counsel : 10/12/2020 10:04 pm : link
He has tremendous physical talent, elite skills that are top 10 projectable. He has a nice feel for the game as well. I don't know if he will be an elite qb, but it's not a stretch to imagine him being highly productive in this league for years to come. And yes, SD was a nice landing spot for him.

I heard Cosell talk about Darnold and he said some interesting things. He said lower body mechanics remain poor. He said Darnold still makes some great plays, especially secondary reaction plays that make you understand why people were so high on him. But he fails to make some plays that kids learn in high school and that should be made by an NFL QB 100% of the time.

Giants absolutely loved Herbert

Considering what Eli did last season versus good teams, maybe it’s not possible to do all that well with a shit OL and middling skill position guys. In addition, I’m fairly certain that he isn’t the first rookie QB to play bad teams. Yet only 3 rookies have thrown more TDs than he did.

Yep couldn’t make a simple throw when it mattered most
He made a few bad throws
ryanmkeane : 10/12/2020 11:56 pm : link
notably the gift INT that New Orleans dropped, and then the 3rd down throw on the final drive in OT.

Again, these aren’t criticisms, he’s a god damn rookie and he looks good. He will probably not have a great record as a starter, much like most rookie QBs don’t that play immediately - because their teams aren’t good!!
I liked Herbert a ton
ryanmkeane : 10/12/2020 11:59 pm : link
and Chargers seem like a great spot for him. He will be good for them, seems like a good kid who gives off kind of a “nothing bothers him” kinda vibe, but it also won’t matter if he struggles a bit because the Charger fans couldn’t give a shit about their team anyway.
I just looked over Herbert's stats after four games...
bw in dc : 10/13/2020 12:17 am : link
64% completion %, 9 TDs/3 INTs, 1 fumble lost, 8.5YPA and a 74+ QBR.

Those are quality numbers so far. And against teams in the hunt for playoff spots - KC, New Orleans, Carolina, and Tampa.
Lets see
mdthedream : 10/13/2020 7:07 am : link
they have two really good wrs and probowl te. Two RBs that can really play and a offensive line that can run the ball. Oh and they have a very talented defense. Hmmm the Giants do not have any of that.

Uh, their center Mike Pouncey has been on IR. RT Bulaga has been hurt (didn’t play last night) and RG Turner has been hurt. And their LT Sam Tevi is a 6th round pick. So I wouldn’t confuse this OL with the Saints.
Herbert has been facing tough teams
Black_Flag : 10/13/2020 9:31 am : link
including the defending super bowl champs and play off contenders and still looks like an all pro. HE ALSO MADE FUCKING PLAYS THAT RESULT IN TDs and held a lead in a competitive game NOT TRAILING FROM BEHIND TWO SCORES IN GARBAGE TIME. Jones played a pretty good game yesterday his first in I don't know how long. And that was against the worst defense in the league! It was the only time I was like "when is he going to make a mistake and blow the game."
So pathetic
Black_Flag : 10/13/2020 9:35 am : link
The Jones homers have to point out one missed throw like that cost them the game. What about him basically pulling a touch down out of his ass on that 3rd and long rolling right when the whole pocket broke down in like 2 seconds in the first half? It were Eli it would have been a sack , if jones it would have been a fumble.

Every QB misses one once in awhile. This guy is also a rookie not in his 2nd year.
Chargers didn’t even have to trade up to get him
Metnut : 10/13/2020 9:39 am : link
Gettleman continues his streak of never trading down in a draft. Maybe their truly were no offers, but that goes against history and I don’t trust Gettleman to tell us the truth.
And another thing
Black_Flag : 10/13/2020 9:40 am : link
If all Jones needs is a pro bowl line; a generation RB; pro bowl TE; Pro bowl receivers -- then what the heck was the point of drafting him at all let alone 6th?

You could have just won with a 39 yr old Eli if you had all that. And by the looks of things you should have gotten all that and when he retired got Herbert. This way you got a system and some meaningful football past week 2!! SMH.

If there were really no offers, the Giants should have drafted Herbert and forced Miami or San Diego to make a trade for Herbert. He was the consensus top QB the year before but decided to return to school.

He has looked very good in his first few games. Im surprised Miami has not given Tua a chance yet, there is no reason for them to keep him on the bench, unless he is injured
