Bend, don’t break

Giantimistic : 10/18/2020 4:40 pm
The Giants are playing a style that I have watched New England play for years. The Patriots want you to have to work all the way done the field and make you at some point make a mistake. They play fundamentally sound and take advantage when the mistake is made.

Except for the end, when we broke, we kept everything in front and made the Skins work. Timely blitzes and some big plays made the difference. We don’t have the players yet but we can expect more of this style. The d has been competitive in most games. I know it is frustrating because of so many Giant teams that had the pass rush—we still do need a big rusher—but this d keeps us in games against some very good teams.

Yep

The Patriots give up tons of hats each year but are always at the top of the league when it comes to pouts allowed..
This defense is either a second corner or a pure pass rusher

from being very good. Right now I'd probably put them just barely into top half of league.

The games I'm watching look more like two morbidly obese men in a footrace on a very hot day.

The same defense that the great, uh, Kyle Allen

easily marched down the field to score what would have been the tying touchdown against? Yeah, they really inspire confidence.
I like this defense

If you can't rush the passer, then make him throw into crowded areas and make tackles. That gets harder to do in the red zone. And two weeks in a row the defense has scored a touchdown.

I think Graham has done a great job.
The defense seems well coached

I wish the offense looked as crisp
Agree that the bend-don't-break

philosophy is a) effective, and b) what we're trying to do. I disagree that our D is almost really good. We're almost a little above average, and we're paper thin.
I'll take it

After last year - that defense made me sick to my stomach.

Going from absolute crap to mediocre is a step I'll take. Hopefully the offense can get there at some point.

they need a pass rusher

the defense

We don’t have the players yet and still get beat, but the style overall is keeping us in games. Not saying it is something to be confident against yet. However, what I don’t see really anymore is blown coverages and receivers running free. Look at all the big plays or touchdowns—the d was right there.
and they seem to have made

some good calls re: defensive FAs - Martinez, Bradberry, & Fackrell

We don’t have a pass rusher, what do you want? You say the same thing each week, don’t really know what the point is. This is likely as good as it’s getting this year.
if you lack dominant pass rushers
bc4life : 10/18/2020 4:55 pm : link
you pick your poison - have a less than effective rush or expose your secondary - 3 of teams projected starters aren't playing

I tend to agree. The defense has zero rush and sketchy cover guys outside of Bradberry. His hands are tied schematically.

Biggest improvement is you no longer see the blown assignments and player running wide open down the field that you saw at least once or twice a game when Bettcher was here
31st in League giving Up 56% of 3rd conversions
joe48 : 10/18/2020 5:16 pm : link
The defense has been unable to get key stops at the end of games. Couple that with an offense that is struggling due to lack of talent to score touchdowns and that is why we don’t win games.

If we start converting in the red zone, we may see a few more winners sooner than later.
Bend but don’t Break
Simms11 : 10/18/2020 6:57 pm : link
Generally leads to giving up too much TOP. That is killing our offense as well. We’re not getting enough opportunities on Offense either and when we do, we need 10+ play drives to get any points. Not a good formula. Defense has to get better on 3 rd Downs. It’s been a problem for a few years now.

times I saw them rush only 3 guys only to give up a first down. Pressure the freakin' QB.
