We’re Making Progress

UticaMike : 10/18/2020 8:06 pm
Tough to put a positive spin on a 1-5 start, but over the last 3 games, we’ve seen some legitimate signs that there may in fact be light at the end of the tunnel.
It appears we have the beginnings of a defense. Bradberry is a stud at corner. Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams are becoming fairly disruptive against the run. Martinez is a tackling machine at linebacker. I’ve noticed far fewer wide open receivers than in past years. We do seem more disciplined. Graham deserves credit. We’ve seemed well prepared, with the exception of the 49ers game. Coming into the game against Washington, we actually had the #8 ranked defense in the NFL. I would assume we will maintain or improve on that ranking after the Washington game.
The running game is improving. I usually don’t have much faith in mid season free agent signings, particularly at the skill positions. But it seems we may have lucked out with Freeman. He’s clearly got some life left in his legs. He’s decisive, reads the defense well, and can run between the tackles. Daniel Jones running ability is also refreshing after many years of Eli.
It’s nice to see draft picks like Peart and Crowder making contributions. We are a super young team. These reps that our young guys are getting are so valuable. The same goes for Daniel Jones. The kid needs reps. There’s no reason to believe he won’t improve. It’s really regrettable that we couldn’t pull out the Bears game and the Cowboys game. If we had, people would be talking about a 1st place Giants team right now and i’m quite sure there wouldn’t be any “Tank for Trevor” posts on BBI.

The progress so far is Judge and Graham
Eric on Li : 10/18/2020 10:36 pm : link
game management is better (esp. clock management and general decision making). The defense is obviously a lot better. And those 2 things showed up in both the win today and the games they had the ball at the end of the game with a chance to win.

the regression is on the offensive side across the board. We can blame that on Jones if we want but other than 1 out of bounds int today, he had a clean game and was the entire offense. We can blame talent too bcause lord knows they need more, but Engram and Slayton in particular are talented players. One is being used correctly the other is not. Not to say he can't be because it's still early, but Garrett has not yet done a good job. It hasn't been too bad but I wish he'd have a little less pride of authorship and just incorporate some of what Jones/Engram in particular did well together last year (when Engram averaged 2x as many yards per game and Jones' numbers were better across the board).

I’m not even really preaching optimism here. Just calling out some folks who preach “winning” here and then somehow discredit the team when they are trying to find their way with a new coach and get their first on the board. That’s all

It's really simple for me. I don't see much on the roster and a win vs WAS doesn't change much for me.

If we had a few young players flash and we lost? That would show more progress for me. I just don't see the talent here.

I'm all in on Jones but I was really hoping to see more today.
There is more discipline being shown
JonC : 10/18/2020 10:41 pm : link
on defense, specials, and Judge's game management is better. The teaching on defense is mostly getting through, though some of the DL and safety play is still leaking mentally. In that sense there's progress out there. Conversely, NYG beat the Redskins last year and now escaped their backup QB by one point at home. There is progress, but fans start suggesting this team's got 7 wins and a playoff shot in it, then I question how close they're paying attention.
It’s not about being rosy
UConn4523 : 10/18/2020 10:41 pm : link
look at the lengths you are going to shit on anyone who enjoyed that the defense made a play to win the game.

Think about that.

Most people admit there’s major problems with the roster. But a win is a win.

KWALL - I could not agree more. Daniel Jones did not have a good game.

so...you’re basically saying that you are rooting for losses.

And players did flash today. Crowder played a very nice game. Leonard Williams had a very good game. Will Hernandez and and Nick Gates played very well. Peart showed that he can be an answer for us at tackle.

And...we won.

Yep.

"look at the lengths you are going to shit on anyone who enjoyed that the defense made a play"?

Where and what are these lengths?

What are you talking about?

I didn't think it was an impressive play to cause the fumble? That is shitting on people? Only a fool would take it that way.
I am not "saying I'm rooting for losses".
KWALL2 : 10/18/2020 10:49 pm : link
I am saying the win today didn't impress or show any progress for me.

I believe there is a difference. Don't you?
Sure

But you just admitted you would have rather lost the game and have some guys play well, than win the game

and who said they were impressed with the win? Pretty sure the thread was started to note some progress being made, the horror!

That’s what I mean by the lengths you are going.

You take that as shitting on a big group of people enjoying a win? Really?
The strange part is you concluding

ryanmkeane : 10/18/2020 10:57 pm : link
Well, the fact that you think no players flashed in this game pretty much seals the deal for me. What game were you watching? Plenty of guys flashed.
Ok I misspoke
ryanmkeane : 10/18/2020 10:58 pm : link
you didn’t say “I’m rooting for losses” but would could conclude that you would rather have lost and have a bunch of guys play well...than us win the game even though we didn’t have our best game.

And that....is just weird to me. That’s all
Who are the players who flashed for you?
KWALL2 : 10/18/2020 11:01 pm : link
I really don't care about a win vs WAS. I didn't "root" for a loss. But the win, vs that WAS team, means nothing to me.

I'm interested in hearing about what guys you saw today that flashed.
Wouldn't..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/18/2020 11:02 pm : link
having a few young players flash in a win be good??

Gates, Peart, Crowder and Lawrence were very good.

Vets like Martinez, Bradberry and Gano were excellent

You can still see progress in players getting better and have a W for it.
I just told you who I thought flashed
ryanmkeane : 10/18/2020 11:06 pm : link
Leonard Williams had a great game. Martínez played well again. Crowder played well. Ryan had his best game of the year. Fackrell had a dumb penalty but also had the key play of the game. Gates and Hernandez played well. I think Peart showed that he belongs out there and it’s exciting to watch him look competent even though he needs a lot of time still. Slayton flashed yet again, he’s obviously hobbled a bit.

But he's a backup at this point and struggling to do much in the NFL.

He played 1/4 of a game before today. And then he he has the weak OL, no running game, and a guy like Inman as his #2? Not much there.

The NYG had a 1 point win today vs this guy and a team widely considered to be in the bottom 3 of the league.

Nothing impressive today. Our QB didn't play well. If he did, damn...that would mean a lot. But he didn't. We didn't do much but barely beat the #31 team in the NFL.

Allen is not the backup QB. He is not. Haskins was the starter and was benched, not even getting a jersey. That means Allen is the starter and Alex Smith is the backup.

When the starting QB is injured and replaced by the #2 that is a backup. When #2 supplants the #1 and thus becomes the #1, he is not the backup. Last year when Jones past Eli on the depth chart, Eli became the backup and Jones became the starter.

Progress was made
larryflower37 : 10/18/2020 11:14 pm : link
They put that "Rookie" on the field so he could make that play.
They changed out Thomas multiple times when he made mistakes.
They sat Balentine down when he made mistakes and has not seen the field.
They are calling runs for Jones.
This coaching staff is working hard to find ways to win.
This is progress as I see it.
The culture is changing and they are finding guys that want to fight and do what it takes to win.
This team will win some games this year.
The talent is not there right now but they are doing everything they can to win football games and be competitive

Matt M. : 10/18/2020 11:33 pm : link
to say we're getting better? Sure, there are some signs on defense. But, at the same time they also allowed what should have been the game tying drive late, which is a trend now. On offense, we scored 13 F-ing points against a team that has given up 30 or more 4 straight weeks prior. How much good was there really, other than we played one of 2 or 3 teams in the league equally as bad as us.

honest question, why even watch the games? If the team is so terrible that a win doesn’t even get you crack a smile then what’s the point? Wait until we are a good team again to find any joy watching football?

Zero people have called this win impressive. It was simply a win the team/organization desperately needed. It was an ugly win, but a win nonetheless.

I said it many times already today...a win is a win. I'm happy they won, but this is not a fun team to watch, even in victory. I watch every week rooting for a win. This week they didn't disappoint, but they sure seemed to be trying (joke). I guess my point is things have gotten so bad, that we are all supposed to be ecstatic at a win like this simply because it wasn't yet another loss.
I would be viewing this win slightly differently

if we didn't have that red zone turnover and instead had a 2 score lead and victory. Instead, we were fortunate Rivera played with nothing to lose (except the game).

Gettleman improved the quality of the Defense with a few astute free agent signings and a couple of draft selections . But now the offense is void of playmakers and still suspect on the OLine . Wack a mole . That’s not good enough m, but they won yesterday . It should have been an easier win -granted .

Players didn’t know their assignments. There is definite progress in terms of the professionalism of the football team. Obviously, it needs more talent. That doesn’t mean they aren’t making progress. It seems like we have a coach. It seems like we have a DC. We have the youngest team in the NFL. Some of those kids look like they will be something. They aren’t finished products but that is part of being a young team.

We were in agreement up until your last line. I have no idea why the critics need to say that or have that opinion. Who’s jumping for joy today?

It’s a thread recognizing that some areas of this team made some progress. What is so damn wrong about that?
The progress is that they won..
Sean : 10/19/2020 8:08 am : link
They lost very tough/close games against Chicago, LA & Dallas which they get no credit for. Well, they won an ugly game here.

This team needs to win close games. But, as stated above the TNF game this week will tell a bigger story.
And no one is talking about it much
UConn4523 : 10/19/2020 8:15 am : link
but go take a look at what Pitt did to the 4-1 Browns. Mayfield got abused, and they looked worse than us. A vet like Cousins threw another 3 picks, and the Vikings overall are trash. The Texans with a top 5 or 6 QB still have 1 win, their D is also trash. The Eagles have 1 win, Wentz still isn’t right, and their D is trash. The Jags have allowed 30+ in 5 straight games. Many teams are getting steam rolled on a weekly basis.

When you look across the league, this defense specifically is playing above their talent level. If that isn’t “progress” then what is it?

That is a great point and the fact this team has been competitive in most of the games this year and finally was able to get a W.

Let's just hope this is one of those wins that gets this young team going. Quick turnaround on Thursday against another team that is struggling.

Holding serve. I like that wording.

Bad timing to go to Philly
JonC : 10/19/2020 8:55 am : link
The Eagles are bipolar in 2020 and tough to figure out, but they've really had the Giants' number in recent years. They need a win really bad, and Giants could well be their get well ticket. It feels like we're set up to be a proper meal. Go in there and beat them, and it would feel like some new measure of progress in addition to the cleaned up discipline and the defense showing some signs.

Just getting a win
crick n NC : 10/19/2020 9:08 am : link
Against Philly won't change how fans see this team. The fans aren't happy with ugly wins over sub par teams. If the eagles game turns out close to this past game against Washington fans are going to use their same "trash win" logic.

It feels wrong to grown about wins since we have seen so few, but I also understand the POV that a single W doesn't necessarily indicate progress.

Giants have often looked overwhelmed and overmatched by the Eagles. Let's not see that on Thursday, match their aggression and not call a game where it seems like they're in our huddle.

Certainly, which is why I doubt fans when they say "win against philly then we are showing progress". There is context within both wins and losses as you stated above, so just a W against Philly isn't what certain fans are looking for, rather they are looking for convincing wins which may be a little too much to ask for at this juncture.
Keep it going
Reale01 : 10/19/2020 5:29 pm : link
Good to win - happy they did.

Certainly agree that there is a lot of room for improvement and all problems are not solved.

A win over the Eagles would be a great next step towards remaining a relevant team in the 2020 season.

This team can compete if they start getting more from Jones and the offense. Perhaps they will improve as they become more comfortable with the system and the offensive line can improve and be more consistent.

We will see.
