NFT: Hockey Fans: Doc Emrick Retiring

nyjuggernaut2 : 10/19/2020 9:03 am
There are certain broadcasting voices that are iconic, and etched into my mind when I think of the sport. My top three are Keith Jackson for college football, John Madden for the NFL, and Doc Emrick for hockey.

Gonna miss hearing Emrick's voice as I do hearing the other guys I mentioned.

to have him calling games for years. No hockey game has been complete for me without his voice. Big loss for the sport. Any idea who becomes number 1 national guy now?

IMO he was the best announcer that I have ever listened to. Growing up as a Devils fan, it was an absolute pleasure getting to listen to him at least 82 times a year. I still remember his voice on several huge Devils moments such as Brodeur’s first goal.
Legend

almost 50 year career.

The best for so long, it's hard to imagine who replaces him in that regard.

Not sure, but I hope it's not Kenny Albert.

A legend... Sad but we all move on eventually
I wouldn't be surprised to see ex-Canes PBP man John Forslund

take over.
With 90 ticks of the clock remaining....

...I love Doc Emrick. Watching a game when you have a rooting interest can drive you nuts but that's his charm. He makes icing a dramatic moment.

I root for the team across the river but this guys is a true legend and I will miss his broadcasts.
All the best to Doc in his

retirement but I won't miss, the screeching trademark oft used pet phrases such as, "the shaaaaaaaawt" as well as, he "pitchforks" the puck out of the zone and "rattles" it around the boards. That and his reference to the "expensive seats" at MSG every time a puck lands in the lower bowl. While I'm not an Islanders fan, they wouldn't be off base taking a look at Brendan Burke as next in line.
Hope..

Doc is OK. There were some rumors floating out there earlier this year about his health
I'd love to see Gary Thorne return to hockey

but he's no youngster either, so not likely.
I wonder if

Eddie Olczyk gets a bigger role, he was awesome in the playoffs.

He's an analyst not play by play, but I wonder if he can do it.

What a great announcer and even better person. I remember back in Highschool in the mid 80's when I started going to games at the old Brendan Byrne arena the tv broadcast was upper deck center ice. When my friends and I would go up to our seats you'd pass right by him and between periods he'd be happy to chat with us for a minute or 2 really warm guy genuinely interested in what us schmucks had to say. Remembering all those great Devils moments he broadcast along with the national calls in the playoffs, really gonna miss him. Probably to a generation of Americans he is what hockey is all about. Kind of like Dan Kelly when I first started watching as a 9 or 10 year old.

Love Gary. He really knows how to reflect the big moment. The few Years Doc left the Devils in the late 80's Gary did the games. His call on Johnny Mac's OT goal to put the Devs in the playoffs in '88 for the first time is the sort of the Devs fan version of Matteau Matteau Matteau.
Doc says loudest he ever heard a building

2015 game 3 Islanders vs Caps. Tavares OT goal. I was there. It was loud. Bates penalty shot would give that moment a run for its money. Im quite certain the cup years produced louder moments. But I was 5 in 1980 so I cant speak to that. But Doc did 45 game 7s and 22 cup finals. Impressive. No place on the planet like the coliseum for a big game..
Emrick simply one of the very best....
BillKo : 10/20/2020 12:22 am : link
...fans who get on him (same crap about announcers not liking their team is BS).

He will be missed during the playoffs.

I remember him back in Philadelphia doing the Flyers. And I recall him - at least I think - wearing what I thought was a toupee.

Anyway, happy retirement, Doc! One of the best!!
