Gates' improvement

Now Mike in MD : 10/19/2020 9:30 am
I rewatched the game and focused on the OL and Gates was really very good. Two plays really stand out. One I think was a draw play to Freeman, and Gates absoultely crushed hsi guy about three yards into the nback field and absolutely pancacked hi, The other was the block on Collins on the run play by Freeman that the Schlereth went nuts over. Showed really good mobility getting. I also didn't see any pressures he gave up, which was impressive considering that Allen and Payne are pretty good players.

by week 2 we were told that Gates sucks at football
He hhas gotten a little better each week
Matt M. : 10/19/2020 9:36 am : link
He is one player in particular who would have really benefitted from any semblance of a real offseasons and camp. If he continues to improve, even a little each week, it could make a big difference on how we approach the OL this offseasons.
based on what I saw...
Andy in Boston : 10/19/2020 9:40 am : link
definitely his best game as a pro. Fleming appeared to play a little better as well.
hes a big tough SOB
mittenedman : 10/19/2020 9:40 am : link
who loves to play.

that is a good start. i like him too.

this team, as a whole, was not going to hit its stride until week 6. it looks like its starting to come around. 1 thing I hope changes under Judge is player development.
He's a tough kid
Jim in Forest Hills : 10/19/2020 9:44 am : link
but I did see Payne manhandle him on some of those runs. He's improving!
Hernandez played pretty well too.

The interior OL seems to be coming along, now fix Thomas's issues and get Peart more playing time.
the entire OL does seem to be progressing
Eric on Li : 10/19/2020 10:07 am : link
Thomas, Peart, and Gates are legitimate reasons for hope that it's for real and will continue too.
agreed. he looks like he's coming on. Fleming is a good vet
Victor in CT : 10/19/2020 10:10 am : link
backup. I'd get Peart and Lemieux in there sooner rather than later, put Zeitler and Fleming on the bench.
I hope he continues to improve
Dinger : 10/19/2020 10:14 am : link
He's the leader on that line. He's ready to 'drop the gloves' for his teammates, the first one in the end zone congratulating and seemingly a standup guy.

I'm extremely surprised and pleased with Gates. Getting a starter out of a converted UDFA is a low odds, near impossibility.
Nice to see Gates improve each week.
bigblue5611_2 : 10/19/2020 10:15 am : link
Overall I agree
Bill L : 10/19/2020 10:15 am : link
but they did talk about Payne and how disruptive he was being...a lot.

Other than being late for a meeting, what were Thomas issues yesterday?

Outside of the third and 1 run play, he played real well yesterday. Gave up zero sacks, zero pressures and was moving his guy off the line in the run game. He missed one block.
He reminds me
McNally's_Nuts : 10/19/2020 10:36 am : link
of Richie Seubert. Tough, hard nose and doesn't take any shit.

What he lacks in athleticism, he makes up for in toughness.
IF Gates pans
TommyWiseau : 10/19/2020 10:44 am : link
out, this will be huge. We have him signed for 2 more years after this year and basically backup salary.
Gates has already been left for dead

Gates has improved with each game
Jay on the Island : 10/19/2020 7:01 pm : link
This was probably his second toughest test of the season and he had his best game. I think the Giants have found their starting center. Now it's time to replace Zeitler and Fleming with Lemieux and Peart.

this is an overstatement. there were some on here who thought he showed well at the guard-tackle spots and should play there with pulley at C. gates would be a better RT than fleming. i don't remember anyone on here outright trashing gates as a player.

Of course people were trashing him as a player. Hell, in the first have of the Dallas game, people complained that we didn't select the C out of Wisconsin and instead are stuck with a stiff at the position. I don't see that as a compliment
Payne threw him around a good bit too.

And Giants would love to have Biadasz out of Wisconsin. Good player already contributing to Dallas team. Silly comment.

Yeah, that Dallas OL looks great! In what ways is he contributing? He's started one game.

Silly comments abound, I see.

The only reason he stepped foot onto the field for Dallas is because their OL has been decimated by injuries. La'El Collins, Tyron Smith, Joe Looney, and Cam Erving are all on IR.
I’m can’t imagine

Rewatching a Giants game this season. I watch them all live, but that’s enough. Even the wins are ugly.

So what? How’s he doing in your view?
