why on earth did Reid not call a timeout when it was 3rd and 10 with 1:40 to go?

If we’d won that stupid game. We’d be going into Thursday night with a chance to go 3-0 in the division with wins over all 3 teams and potentially a 2 game lead. Just it’s amazing to think about how close we were to having that opportunity.

I don’t think McAdoo was a misunderstood genius by any measure— he clearly did a terrible job of leading, commanding respect, and holding the locker room together.

BUT I also don’t really buy the whole “rode a defensive shopping spree to the playoffs” narrative I always read on here. If all we had to do was empty the bank and buy a shiny new defense to become a playoff team again why haven’t we done that? Didn’t we have like $90M in cap room this past offseason? Wasn’t 2020 supposed to be “the year” where all our cap space was cleared to build an actual team? That cap $ ran out quick (although I like the signings we made) and it certainly hasn’t translated into a nice platinum one-hit wonder defense that Judge can sit back and ride to an easy 10-6 record.

I still think things fell apart incredibly fast in 2017. It felt at first like we were catching some bad breaks here and there and we stacked a few close one score losses... and everyone was freaking out and calling to clean house (including the media) and the players weren’t mentally strong enough to keep it out of their locker room. Mistrust was sewed so quickly and McAdoo didn’t have the balls to grab control of the whole thing and next thing we knew a few fireworks here and there turned into a full on dumpster fire out of nowhere. In retrospect it really was pretty amazing how quick everyone was to call 2016 a fluke and blow the whole thing up. It’s been 4 years and we haven’t sniffed a .500 season since.

Just a quick addendum to this. The injury bug hit big time heading into October...the offense got decimated.

To that point, we could have easily lost yesterday and been pretty much totally out of it.

We are where we are at this point. An extremely young team still trying to learn how to win in a not very good division. All you can do is try to look forward to Thursday night and hope they can keep building.

We can definitely use Shepard back!

Zeke as much as anyone, but he's finally seeing what it is like to run behind a average to below average OL. Not many people thrive in that situation.

It also makes evaluating what he's lost pretty difficult

This cowboys line is putrid right now. Zach Marin got a concussion this game. No idea how to explain the fumbled, but anyone seeing that zeke lost a step is fooling themselves. I’ve watched every cowboys game this year When the line was average this year zeke was making yards on his own

Doesn't that support the argument that more investment in o-line is better spent at helping average RBs produce better than putting more resources into RB than the OL?

[quote] it's really stupid to draft a QB two years in a row... [/quote

Serious question because I don’t remember but were you this dead set against Jones last season? Was your mind made up by this past offseason?

My timeline with Jones was this:

1. Saw the Pro Days, I thought Jones was clearly the best non-Murray QB
2. Once Eli's bonus was paid, I said drafting a quarterback was stupid and made absolutely no sense
3. Some relief when it was Jones and not Haskins, but of course Gettleman fucked up resource allocation again; we ended up paying Eli $23M for 4 starts
4. I was encouraged early by Jones's play, and grew more and more concerned as the year went
5. This season my concern has grown into dread that we're tying any aspect of our future to him

It's all based on his play. He's got major flaws that aren't the kind of thing you coach out of a guy very often.

Man bro you still on that blue pill. So what i say will go over year head like a chicken non believing we eating them but....Gentlemen sure as hell didnt sign Eli that was Mara decision and 2 Jones was chosen by the Manning family, its why Peyton and Eli was practicing at Duke every offseason....you dont see them going to any other colleges

In my eye, yes. He doesn't have the break away ability he once had. He can still do some pretty good damage in the 10-15 yard area, but he's not running away from anyone.

I think it's a combination of these (in order): natural wear and tear from all of his touches, he looks like he's lost his top fitness (his own fault), and the Dallas OL continues to be a patchwork solution almost week after week.

It's just the nature of that position, really. Diminishing returns just accelerate more quickly than any other position unless you are a freak like Peterson, Sanders, etc. I just think as a GM/Owner you have to be crazy to pay top dollar for RBs. You just don't get the ROI; and more often than not you are really paying for services rendered...

Observation on Kyler Murray.
section125 : 10/20/2020 8:14 am : link
1st time I have actually watched him play since he was drafted. He is very similar to Lamar Jackson except noticeably smaller and I'm not sure as strong an arm, which is plenty strong enough. Maybe he is more like Russell Wilson with out the arm. IMV, he is better at producing with his legs vs his passing. The one bomb he threw was a beauty even if the catch was better than the throw - but still a very good throw. Not sure he is all that accurate as he missed several open receivers and had issues especially DeAndre Hopkins on his reads - it could have been Hopkins that made the mistakes.
He is fun to watch and he is smart enough to get what he can when he runs and get down long before he gets hit - very smart.

I came away feeling that he is in the wave of future QBs that the NFL will be looking for. Explosive runner, impossible to defend against with an arm just good enough to be effective. His style will be more easily replaced in case of injury as colleges will produce more of this style QB then your standard drop back QB. Watching him, I actually thought I was watching a college game. Mahomes and Wilson are the Gold Standard right now and Jackson could be with them, except he does not throw nearly as well.
Zekes game was never breakaway speed
Zeke's Alibi : 10/20/2020 8:24 am : link
He creates yards on the first and second level. Their line was so dominant and he was just fast enough to break away once he was in third level untouched.

BH28. Yes you build the team. The real investment in an elite RB is that it opens up the passing game and with a competent oline will put up video game numbers. Jesus just look at the numbers Saquon put up that year and then look at our other backs his rookie year. The diffference in YPC between an elite back and average is 1 yards plus. The real key in the NFL is try to be competent everywhere with 1 or 2 difference makers. Build an elite oline with no skill players what happens when you go up against an elite DL.
I will also say we shouldn’t be so fast to bury Dallas
Zeke's Alibi : 10/20/2020 8:48 am : link
Zeke fumbled on back to back drives leading to TDs. Sometimes a few plays just open up the flood gates in football games. Martin and Looney will be back soon. Of course with Dalton at QB the Cowboys fans are going to wish they had Garrett coaching this team but you’ll never get anyone to admit it. Of course based on my experience with them they are beyond bummed and even if they make playoffs they know they aren’t going anywhere. They went into this year thinking they were going to have a league leading offense with a solid defense to compete for the NFC crown at least. No chance this team does that

Agreed. He defies stat quantification a bit b/c he can throw like Uncle Rico for 1/2 the game, and then run for a 60 yard TD and throw an 80 yard TD while you are getting a beer. He’s the definition of explosive. At at 23, already learning to win in the NFL ... watch out.
