Logan Ryan - Excellent Addition

mittenedman : 10/20/2020 9:04 am
What a stabilizing force he's been. Plays a good FS, slot CB and even outside CB when they need him to. Can blitz, cover, play the ball and tackle.

He reminds me of Deon Grant - good veteran who can still play and knows what it takes/what it's supposed to look like. A football player.

When McKinney gets back it will be very interesting to see what kind of pass D the Giants have.

I am interested in keeping both him and Devonta Freeman around another year as the rebuild progresses. Stabilizing forces on each side of the ball.

Having to integrate them on the fly was part of the reason we struggled early. Too bad they weren't on the team at the start of camp. If they were, we might have another win or 2 under our belts. Really liking what they've done for the team.
I agree. Would love to have

both return next year. Freeman can be the battering ram to counter Saquan. But I think he will look for a bigger contract.

Ryan is a nice piece. Not sure what he would be looking for.
it's popular to shit on Gettlemen...

but he did have a successful FA this offseason. Blake Martinez, Bradberry, Logan Ryan, and Fackrell have all been key contributors.
I’d like to see them extend him
BillT : 10/20/2020 9:09 am : link
Maybe a two year extension at similar dollars to what he’s making. He’s shown he can play and you can’t have enough DBs who can play.
I agree..

Logan Ryan is just a really good football player when you watch him.

I have also been pleasantly surprised with Freeman, even though I always liked him going back to his days at FSU.
I think it was Art Stapleton
nygiants16 : 10/20/2020 9:11 am : link
He mentioned there is talk in keeping him past this year..

Will be interesting when Mckinney comes back how much more valuable Ryan is..You can have him in the slot with 3 safeties on the field, kind of like how Rolle was used in 2011

Agreed the FA class this year has been great.

That said, Dave deserves the grief he gets. It’s still a 1-5 team. They don’t hand out wins for nice FA acquisitions
Watching Freeman

just makes the Barkley selection even more of a gut-punch. I'm a big Barkley fan, although I never thought he was as good as they hype.

But I'm a lifelong Giants fan. You don't need a Barkley at RB. You need a RB who will get the yards that are blocked.

And in Barkley's case, teams were run blitzing him constantly which put the whole offense under siege, and the Giants had no answer. With Freeman, teams are playing us differently and it's been easier to move the ball.
I agree

it's weird feeling when FAs actually contribute. I really hope we keep freemen next year. Especially with Barkley coming back from an ACL it just makes sense to have a competent backup.

Keep in mind

That Judge may have a hand in these free agent acquisitions.
Defense definitely got better this year

I love Logan Ryan, Blake Martinez and James Bradberry. Those are signings I 100% get behind.
McKinney

Any update on his return?
good player

but he's 29 years old and if he's gone after this season what will have been the point? If we're really in rebuilding mode, we're likely better off trading him before the deadline - unless the team thinks he might help with the comp pick formula this upcoming offseason.

This is why people should sh*t on DG. I was in his corner for the most part and really think he needs to go now. After 3 years we have Martinez, freeman and ryan to hold up as decent additions. We still have Solder, Tate and a host of players no longer with us to counter those arguments. Same for his Draft picks. Is he a 50% shooter or less? Feel like a GM needs to hit 75% of the time to be successful.

So far Freeman is giving them what they thought Jonathan Stewart would (which they were obviously wrong about)

As we improve Barkley will provide an accelerator to the offense, far above what Freeman can do. Yes right now they are backing off the run blitzing because Barkley was the big threat and their game plan on D was solely to stop him. However as we improve, and can hurt them with the pass, that will go away and Barkley will be really good (like he was initially as a rookie).

As I said when this happened (and got panned), losing Barkley this season may be a good thing. He gets a big rest, and the offense learns to pass block, pass the ball, and run better. When Barkley comes back he will step into a more legitimate offense that hopefully defenses can't just focus on one thing

We will see how it plays out but you may be right. Only exception to this and where it could prove false is if his injury changes his ability to cut and run like he used to. Similar to how OBJ and Cruz were not the same after their injuries.

Freeman has actually been a great signing and we are so lucky he was sitting on his couch. He looks better right now on this bad Giants team than he did the last year he played for Atlanta.
credit is due to both the FO and the coaches
Eric on Li : 10/20/2020 10:02 am : link
notice how good decisions cascade down from the head coach.

Judge's biggest move as HC was to target Graham. Many of us thought that was a little odd since he'd only been a DC for 1 year. But Judge knew him and his evaluation has looked very good.

He got Graham, who then went out and got both of the GB LB's he'd coached before as well as Ryan whom he'd had in NE. And Bradberry who Gettleman had originally drafted. That is a text book offseason where the entire FO seems to have successfully collaborated with alignment between good scouting and a good coach putting together a scheme that has been successful.

The flip side to this coin is very stark as we recently experienced with Bettcher, who had a similar reputation and similarly added a lot of his former players, to disastrous consequences for both himself and his HC. Had Shurmur been able to successfully find a good DC he may still be here.

...because he's done a wretched job and the team reflects his incompetence.

the point is the team has to have sime concept if success and good play. If a young team is getting ripped apart week after week with no success (like last year under Bettcher) the young guys may not develop.

imo its important for the younger players to experience success even in baby steps like stopping the other team once in a while.

in other words, since DG is incapable of rebuilding with young, cost controlled players good enough to keep the team competitive, we have to squander resources on veteran players on short term deals that won't be around when the team is actually ready to contend. Got it!
ENZO you aren't being fair.
mittenedman : 10/20/2020 2:02 pm : link
Every rebuild needs a few well-placed vets to keep the ship straight. Ryan has allowed this D to function, just like Freeman on O. That is very important right now. Get some kind of base competency established you can build off.
At the risk of getting flamed
81_Great_Dane : 10/20/2020 2:11 pm : link
DG gets no credit for things that work and all blame for things that don't.

I suspect the speculation that he'll "retire" is on target, and that would be fine with me, but he's made some moves that worked out, like Ryan and Freeman. The Giants aren't saddled with a bunch of expensive older players and bad contracts. Judge looks like the right coach, though we have a small sample size. If there's a new GM next year, the situation he'll inherit isn't a disaster, especially if Jones and Thomas pan out (which is not a sure thing at all).
I like Ryan too
SteelGiant : 10/20/2020 10:36 pm : link
I hope Mckinney shows promise when he returns and replace Peppers instead. If there was a to shop Peppers before April, sign Logan, and draft another Safety to upgrade Love, that would be my plan.
Ryan is an a great addition to the secondary
Rick in Dallas : 10/21/2020 10:03 am : link
I also like the addition of Ryan Lewis. I also feel that they blew a 7th round pick on Isaac Yiadom. He is awful.
