There could be several GM openings, too As we mentioned, the Texans and Falcons jobs are already open. Industry sources are watching the Panthers and Giants for potential openings, and some believe Washington will hire a general manager at some point as well. What's interesting about this is the way teams decide to pair up the two positions. The Giants, for example, have always instituted a strict separation of powers between the GM and the head coach, but they're in this awful cycle right now in which they always seem to be replacing one or the other. They fired coach Tom Coughlin after the 2015 season but kept GM Jerry Reese. They fired Reese and coach Ben McAdoo during the 2017 season, hired GM Dave Gettleman months before hiring coach Pat Shurmur, fired Shurmur after two years and are widely expected to fire Gettleman after this year. Do they stick with the "Giant Way?" Or do they think about matching up new coach Joe Judge with a GM they know he can work with? Teams such as the Bills and 49ers are having success in situations in which they picked the coach first and matched him up with a GM with whom he already had a strong relationship. That could become the trend, in which case the coach hires might take on more importance than the GM ones. As for GM candidates? The names you hear include: Caserio, the longtime Patriots exec whose new contract, per sources, allows him to leave whenever he wants to. Eliot Wolf (the son of former NFL GM Ron Wolf), who's now working with Caserio in New England after stints with the Packers and Browns. He is still on teams' lists. Vikings assistant GM George Paton, who some believe would leave Minnesota for the right opportunity. He got a long look from the Browns last year but decided to stay put. Usual suspects from the Seattle front office, Scott Fitterer and Trent Kirchner. Veteran personnel man Alonzo Highsmith, also with the Seahawks, helped build talented rosters in Green Bay and Cleveland, along with Wolf. Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen, Chiefs director of football operations Mike Borgonzi, Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds and Bucs director of player personnel John Spytek. The key here is to watch the winning organizations. Those are the ones from which other teams like to find coaching and GM talent. |
The interesting thing here is what kind of connections would Joe Judge, who's previous roles include positional coach and ST coordinator, have with any potential GMs out there?
My guess is very little - which actually might be a good thing.
We're a bad team, but we're building a core. I'd like to see that continue.
I think the ownership is going to go all in on Judge and give him “his” guy in the GM seat. Both Caserio and Ossentfort have the New England connection, and there may be others out there as well. The Giants are going to run through Judge.
Until it's proven otherwise it's fool me once, fool me twice.
Also given Judge's preference to work with people he knows, I think a Pats front office exec is the most likely option by a lot.

Not at all. The patriots had a GM in title but he works in concert with Bill .- Bill B makes most of the personnel calls there
If Judge is clear that Daniel Jones is his QB absent Trevor Lawrence being there then what does it matter? I want a GM to assemble the roster that Judge feels he needs to succeed, rather than forcing round pegs into square holes because they happen to be BPA. Notice how the drafting improved substantially from late Fassel tenure to early Coughlin tenure when you finally had a coach who knew what he wanted and the staf got those types of players. In Buffalo, at least the first draft which got players like Tredavious White was from holdover scouts who said that the coach/GM had a clear vision of the type of player they wanted and they knew which players fit that mold.
Although I can’t help but feel it’s just a matter of time until Kevin Abrams is promoted.
Ziegler - ( New Window )

Only an organization this screwed up would think anyone in the front office deserves a promotion.
The reality is that as long as John Mara picks the GM and the head coach, the likelihood of success is basically nil. He should recognize his incompetence, step aside, and let Judge take a crack and hiring the personnel guy. But unfortunately people are funny about not recognizing their own incompetence. Despite everything that has happened since 2011, I am willing to bet that John Mara looks in the mirror every morning and sees a guy he thinks is responsible for 2 Super Bowls in the last 13 years.
I also like the idea of Judge having strong influence on the GM selection. The fate of the coach and GM should be tied together, rather than having a GM come in and have to live with a coach he wouldn't have hired or isn't his guy.
It simply can't be Abrams because as said above, nobody in this front office should be getting a promotion give the on-field results the last several years.
Thus, if Judge somehow gets the arrow pointing up by the end of the year, DG won't be fired/retiring. But if the Giants continue on the path they seem to be on, and end up with another top 5 pick, DG will still be here in 2021. Because THAT is The Giants way. They'll suck again, and he'll retire in 2022.
Knowing Mara - absolutely.
Think that has more to do with Gase than the process of HC first, GM second.
Garbage in, garbage out
Knowing Mara - absolutely.
Yeah. Even if somehow the Giants won the division at 5-11, Mara would say "I can't fire a GM who delivered a playoff home game in New York."
Question is will Judge be asked and does he have enough inside to speak his mind if he feels otherwise.
If we finish well - DG likely stays.
Coaches have their own plan on how to build a team, and HC and GM have to be on the same page. Judge isn't going anywhere - he has a 5-year deal, and he's shown a command of game management - so he should and will have lot of say in who the next GM is.
I think he should be consulted, if only to make sure ownership knows the GM and the HC will be relationally compatible, and on the same page as far as what this team should be, but ownership should have the final decision on this.
Go full Patriots. 😈
I would be okay with Abrams as the financial guy as his primary function with Judge having more say on player personnel.
But I really like the idea of the Titans guy, Monti Ossenfort or whatever. That Titans roster is built the way youre supposed to.
Knowing Mara - absolutely.
I’m no DG fan, but if they win the division, he should stay

to be the worst division in the the history of the NFL, is that enough for Gettleman to stay in his seat?

Forget what Mara will do, because I think that's obvious, but if we go 6-10 and "win" the division - it's very laughable even writing that, btw - you are really comfortable keeping DG in the role?
Judge wasn’t on anyone’s radar here. Not one. Yet here we discussing the next potential GM and many here are certain it’s gonna be an in-house, uninspiring hire or worse yet, a nepotistic hire like Chris mara.
Even better is the take that DG unfortunately and incredulously keeps his job even if the giants win the East. Man what a shame that would be.
Another brilliantly shitty thread thanks to the same cynical and miserable posts. There are a few good insightful comments in here, thankfully.

It’s mathematically very difficult to win the division at 6-10, but if they they do I’m fine with him sticking around.
So using that view, I would guess Mara and fmic would say he should stay.
