to become something else other than the Redskins seems like it would be too much a loss of identity for the franchise. In a way "Football Team" implies the name had to go (not my opinion) but it's still the same team their fans identify with. I think their new helmet with no stripes and numbers on the side look particularly boring. They'd look better using that new "W" on the side.
My solution would have been to just drop the "Red" part of Redskins and continue as the Skins which is what people refer to them as half the time anyway, and rolled with the helmet they've used in the past linked below. Link - ( New Window )

It's an easy pr move to generate sympathy for the team
Idiots. I really liked the Redtails in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen , although I guess some of the Tuskegee Airmen came out against it. Shouldn’t take a couple years to change a name
Is that I was at the deli on Monday and was talking to the guy behind the counter and discussing the game. I said, "you gotta love River Boat Ron and the Skins going for two at the end of the game". There was someone else in line and made it a point to say, they are no longer that name, they are the football team from Washington (and was a nasty prick about it).
They can also just drop the "Football Team" and just be "Washington". If there weren't 2 teams here I'd be perfectly fine if it was just "New York" as well.
I'm sure they already know what their next name will be
Red Storm ... Rising’. ... It would honor Tom Clancy who grew up in a Baltimore and was a huge sports fan ... he tried to buy the Vikings at 1 point ....
Soccer (not MLS) does it properly. Washington Football Club, NY Football Club, etc would be so much better. So, I am 100% for keeping it the WFT. And so many people talk about names as if they should pay homage to something or someone. Really? It's a football team.
Failing that, I truly believe they should sell naming rights for the team.

Bill - I agree eith you that paying homage to someone or something is silly and not necessary. Logos and mascots may be silly and juvenile, but they are also fun for a lot of fans. That's what sports should be; fun. I like the idea of selecting something indigenous to the region, if possible. Hell, even for teams that moved, like the Jazz and Lakers, after some time that doesn't seem weird any longer. But, initially it is a nice touch, I think.

But even in soccer, those teams have nicknames. Arsenal is the Arsenal FC, but they are also the Gunners. Fans need something to say other than "Football Club"
RE: RE: I still think that the whole concept of mascots and team names

That's actually one of the things I hate the most about soccer.
I have to say, really wanting mascots is the most un Greg-like thing I could have imagined. Who's posting for you today?
Soccer has it right, mascots are corny at the professional level. In the grand scheme of things I don't really care since there's history but if we were the NY Football Team i'd be perfectly fine with it.
I successfully made my first pulled pork on Sunday. It was awesome. That's why the Giants won and we all know it. They should be the hogs. All I ever think of when I hear Washington and that ugly red colored jersey is pork.
in Soccer I root for Everton which is located in Liverpool. But Liverpool is also its own team and they go by....Liverpool.
Very difficult!
But their fans call them the Reds
When you think about it, our fans call the Giants (and associated personnel) all sorts of things which are not officially part of the team nomenclature. I guess it is common.

Let's take a trip in the wayback machine. The first professional sport, baseball, used to be similar to european soccer. Although you can find instances of team nicknames throughout baseballs history (Knickerbockers, spiders), they were usually unofficial, and names like Boston Baseball Club or New York 9 were common, or were descriptors of the uniform or location (Red Stockings, Hartfords, Gothams)
This lasted up though the early 1900s, and nicknames continued to be more fluid. The Dodgers went through multiple names, and for dual league cities like Boston, you'd end up with Americans and Nationals as the descriptors. Fans and papers may have had nicknames for their teams, but still not really official. For example the Yankees only became the Yankees because Highlanders (which itself was just used because of the location of the park) was a very long word in the newspaper. So the paper changed it.
Eventually the nicknames stuck and became official, and when the NFL was formed they followed suit, often just copying, or at least being inspired by, the name of the MLB team.
So if you want to be mad that we're Giants fans and not New York National Football Club fans, blame baseball.
That’s not the issue. He offered to let them have the names.

Skins is still a slur...
LOL.
I still think they should have kept the name and just changed the logo to a red-skinned potato
Washington Organization For Make Great Football of American Game

That works. or Deadskins. or maybe WTF?
"Let's go Football Team!!!" "C'mon - Football Team" "Here we go Football Team Here We Go"!!
What the hell is wrong with society.
So ridiculous.
Redtails (while nice in theory) sounds so lame.
Covid was probably a factor there in slowing things down.
Yeah, it's grown on me. They should just make it permanent. It has a nice ring to it.

Pigskins was the lowest hanging fruit, ostensibly couple have kept the skins nickname that way
People complained to change the name. They got what they wanted and there's still complaining about the name.
Football Team it is.

But knowing Snyder they will pick a shitty name to sell more merch.

Fuck soccer. Fuck everything about that worthless sport and whatever disgusting influences it's having on the American sporting public.

You're such a baby, haha. Atleast its good for a laugh.
Very difficult!
If fans needed something to shout, they can say "Dubs."
Is "Dubs" stupid? Maybe. Any dumber than cheering for Knicks, Nets, Magic, Wizards, Heat, Lakers, Celtics, Jazz, Wild, Thrashers, Athletics?

So what's the difference then if they have an unofficial nickname instead of an official nickname?
