Pretty cool Eli and Kurt Warner interaction

Keaton028 : 10/21/2020 1:30 pm
On twitter. I always thought the transition from Warner to Eli bugged Kurt. Both guys are class acts. Just thought this was interesting.

BTW Eli on Twitter has been gold.

Kurt
I remember that week. I was at Hilton Head on vacation.
GiantBlue : 10/21/2020 1:51 pm : link
We were 5-2 I believe and the announcement came that Tom was switching to Eli. I believe there was something about Kurt's sore thumb and of course going with the future in Eli.

But at the time, I remember Kurt was bitter about it and it seemed like for about five years of so, he seemed anti-Giants working the NFL Network.

Am I wrong about that?

5-4.

Lost back to back games against Josh McCown of the Cardinals and to the immortal Craig Krenzel of the Bears.

Warner was holding onto the ball forever and had a few bad fumbles.

Correct, Warner's fumbling was killing the Giants. They needed to make the change.

Did you even see what Kurt wrote?
Warner was ineffective
Banks : 10/21/2020 2:47 pm : link
His rating was nice and we had a winning record, but he was playing poorly imo. He was complaining about the receivers not being where he expected which might have led to him just checking down all the time, but he wasn't helping the offense. Plus he was taking a lot of sacks of his own making and fumbling. Despite the record you could see where that season was headed. It was the right and smart move by Coughlin.

+1... clearly it is still bugging him
Maybe not ...
Beezer : 10/21/2020 3:02 pm : link

... but there's just enough ambiguity there, and us (BBI) knowing how Eli CAN be dry at times with his humor/sarcasm ... was he taking a little bit of a shot? Subtly?

Like I said. Maybe not. Hell, probably not.

But just ... Eli ... and he HAD to know Kurt took some shitty shots in those early years. I don't think Kurt was anything close to a "class act." I do admit, I have no idea what type of mentor he was or became, considering he was only with the Giants for 7 more games.
I think

Eli was being sincere.
Holding the ball too long and fumbling...

Warner was a class act.

Although disappointed, he definitely did mentor Eli. Eli consistently said so that year, and during games, we almost always saw Warner next to Eli when the offense came off the field. A major issue with Warner's play for the Giants was that Coughlin made Warner try to fit the Giants' system rather than adapting their system to his strengths, which I always thought was very short-sighted. Another testament to his character: signing autographs in Albany. He stayed to sign after everyone else had gone. I asked a guy who attended frequently, and he said that Warner did that every day.
The interaction with O'Hara is more interesting

You are 1000% correct... I’m sure I dropped that ball on that one!! Once I was benched I was more worried about if I could find another job in NFL & just forgot about my guys upfront... no excuses my bad #60, I owe you!!
Warner looked completely cooked with the Giants.
81_Great_Dane : 10/21/2020 7:20 pm : link
His resurgence in Arizona was amazing. I think he's been kind of dickish over the years about Eli and the Giants, but his story on the field is truly amazing.

How is it still bugging him?

I imagine @ the time it was awkward-when isn't it when one is benched?-but it looks like time still heals all wounds.

He was brought in
Black_Flag : 10/21/2020 10:53 pm : link
for that sole purpose after Kery Collins said no.

Speaking of harboring resentment I wonder if Eli is. I know I kind of am. I remember Bradshaw was the only one who was like "Eli should pack his bags and go home."

the concussions seemed to have distorted Warner's memory
Eric on Li : 10/21/2020 11:25 pm : link
unlike Fitz he got replaced because his performance nose dived and the season was sinking fast. The team started 4-1 and had that continued he probably would have remained the started - but the proverbial wheels fell off with him taking 24 sacks and committing 9 turnovers in the next 4 games going 1-3. Coughlin did him a favor because it would have gotten even uglier for him in those upcoming games vs. Baltimore, Philly, Pitt, etc. He's lucky that was the pre-YT era because the RZ INT he threw before half in the Chicago game gave even Kerry Collins' worst INT's a run for their money.

In his 10 total games that year he had 6 tds, 4 ints, 9 fumbles, 39 sacks, averaged just 200 ypg and he was actually held under 200 yards in his last 4. He didn't have a single multi-TD game. And he sucked the next 2 years in AZ also before his miraculous end of career run.

it's obviously a different era that's hardly worth comparing statistically but Fitzpatrick has at least won 3 of his last 4 games and played well. Not that it's necessarily the wrong decision to replace him, just that he has a much better claim to the crocodile tears Warner milks every time a veteran QB gets replaced by a rookie. He has fetishized these moments like Mercury Morris and undefeated teams losing.
I think you're reading too much into what he said
steve in ky : 10/21/2020 11:33 pm : link
Warner was empathizing with how Fitz must feel, since he went through something similar. And he also made a point to say that Fitz is playing better than he was.

There is a very strong argument to be made that from 06-10 Warner was the better player.

Worked out well for both giants and cardinals and outside of the HOF stuff not sure Warner is really ever unfair towards Eli. This seems like an overly defensive reaction by BBI compared to what he actually said.
You know what is weird
Black_Flag : 10/22/2020 9:44 am : link
How and why is K Warner like a spokesperson for the Giants like he is LT or Phil Simms or something?

I mean I never hear Kerry Collins chimming in his 2 cents about Eli or Jones or this Defense or anything.

This guy who I liked a whole lot more when he was on the Rams; was a Journeyman ; he played liked 9 games in a Giants uniform? I actually liked him except for all his dumb comments and not to mention it seems like Ancient history now anyway.

The offense was designed for Eli Manning, not the interim qb which everyone knew was Warner's role.

I know. Warner said nothing that should offend anyone. He goes on to say how the move worked out very well for the G-men.

Warner was an excellent qb and an amazing story. From Iowa Barnstormers to a 12 year career, three Super Bowl appearances and threw for 300+ yards in every one. The amount of shit he gets around here, you'd think he spit on your mothers.
Warner took some serious shots
Section331 : 10/22/2020 10:20 am : link
in his last 2 seasons in StL, and I don't think the cobwebs had cleared yet when he was playing for the Giants. That, and the offense wasn't well-suited for him. That half-season off may have been the best thing to happen for him, as it allowed him to get healthy.

What I don't get is the need for some Giants fans to take shots at him.

From 04-06 Warner was not very good. Including his 5 wins with the Giants he was 8-16 and he had 23 tds / 18 ints / 31 fumbles.

Over that same period of time Eli was 20-19 with 54 tds, 44 ints, and 21 fumbles.

Point being there's not much of an argument that Warner was the better player when he was replaced by Eli. He was playing very poorly and while obviously a #1 overall pick is going to get on the field eventually, he seems to abdicate his own performance as a factor in that decision. And as others have mentioned that he knew he was coming here to be a mentor to Eli in the first place.

His resurgence from 2007-2009 at age 36 was both remarkable and completely unpredictable. That was not the same player that played for the Giants.
