Who do the Giants have to pay?

Jim in Forest Hills : 10/24/2020 2:01 pm
In the discussion re paying Williams I was thinking who the hell do they have to pay?

Solder/Zeitler/Tate likely gone next year./

Tomlinson, ok.

WHo are they saving money for? Not Barkley, he has to show he's back. Jones in 2 years? The OL is cheap for the next few years.

How can DAL have so many highly paid players, D Lawrnce, Tyron Smith, Elliot, Prescott, Martin, SMith and the Giants can't afford Williams?

I think they can pay him and still go get the FAs they need. I mean who is really eating the cap?

Don’t get me started

We can’t pay Williams!! Save the money for edge players!!

Where are all these edge players ??

We used to pay
djm : 10/24/2020 2:10 pm : link
Rocky Bernard, chris Canty, Justin Tuck and Osi big money. All at the same time. Kiwi wasn’t that cheap either if memory serves. Boley wasn’t cheap. Rolle was highest paid safety. Webster was getting paid. I might even be forgetting someone else.

Now we pay Bradbury and Martinez.
The refs

Would make a big difference.
The roster stinks
JonC : 10/24/2020 2:23 pm : link
They don't have to pay to keep anyone in the big UFA realm. They could pay or trade LW or Tomlinson (whom they've been trying to trade). Roster isn't good enough to demand signing their UFAs out of fear or "there's no one else". That's weak.

Keep your heart out of it.
Giantimistic nails it.

there's a floor to spend to, and I expect them to get LW done. I'd retain Gano, you could make an argument for keeping Logan Ryan, but not seeing any real musts.
With the salary cap being lower next year

I wonder if we'll see a bunch of one year deals for players who need a better market to cash in a deal
Very few "have to pay" guys that Giants
LBH15 : 10/24/2020 2:56 pm : link
have to deal with. But makes no sense to make an unforced errors either.

Its ok take some risk into account (of a bad signing) if position looks to be of low supply for upcoming Free Agents and/or Top 100 Draft.

Not difficult for a competent GM.

Zero emotions in this, I have no special affinity for Williams
Jim in Forest Hills : 10/24/2020 2:57 pm : link
and I hated the trade.

But I just keep hearing we can't pay Williams and Tomlinson, why? If they are a strength, keep the strength. If a FA Edge rusher is available, get him too, what on earth would hold us back?
Football wisdom?

We know they're trying to trade Tomlinson. It suggests we're not necessarily looking at his NYG standing correctly.

The problem with that is this seems like it will take a few years to get back to normal as they aren't going to take the whole hit in 1 year. I do agree we will see a lot of one year deals but I don't think it is worth the risk for the next 2 or 3 years for the player. A 2 or 3 year deal would be better IF they can still land that big contract when that smaller contract expires.

He wears the Scarlet "R" on his jersey. A couple of guys left.

The cap seems to be entirely theoretical for a lot of teams. They have perfected the art of kicking the can down the road indefinitely.
If there are not better alternatives

Available you pay him. But not if the money is crazy.

If the cap starts going down, then we're at the end of the road.
You have to start paying some
section125 : 10/24/2020 5:08 pm : link
of the good players or the circle never ends. LW would be a nice keep, but I think he will cost too much. Depending on what Tomlinson wants I would keep him in the $6 mill range. Logan Ryan, again for backup maybe starter money I would keep him. Fackerel I would probably like to keep. I do not think they can find enough players in either the draft or FA to really improve unless they keep a few of their own.

We do? Haven’t seen anything here except this. No saying your wrong Jon but what’s the source.
I cannot share, as usual
JonC : 10/24/2020 6:40 pm : link
but the talk was out there last off-season and has apparently picked up again.

We do.
Engram too
JonC : 10/24/2020 6:45 pm : link
but seems the offers are mid-rounders.
You HAVE to pay Williams
Chris L. : 10/24/2020 7:29 pm : link
the Gettleman haters need to get over this. He is your best DL. Also, when he signs for big money elsewhere what do you get? A third round pick? Can't build a winner with third round picks. We are trying to build a roster. How do you do that when you let your top players walk every year. Hate to say this but we need to get competitive before we set our eyes on winning a championship. Have to walk before you run. I would sign both Williams and Tomlinson. Add Greg Rousseau to the group we have and watch out.

Thanks. Do you think that might mean they are going to a “4-3” thus needing to pay only Williams and Lawrence.
I doubt it
JonC : 10/24/2020 9:00 pm : link
They run both schemes in order to be multiple like Judge pointed out, tailoring the scheme to fit the gameplan each week. LW is very much a 3-4 DE but plays well in 4-man fronts. Dexter is multiple as well.
That said, it does seem Tomlinson will be the odd man out

This is foolish. I agree that the Giants should look to keep LW, but not at 17 million. Maybe not even 15 million per. We are fairly deep at the position and can deal without him. Maybe another corner. Maybe Bud Dupree. Maybe anybody. But his price tag I dont think is in anybody's ball park. But a fair offer to stick around where he has spent his whole career, get paid well and experience success....thats a strong selling point.

But to overpay a guy because he has played well shpuld not be on the agenda. Make a strong offer to him and Dalvin and keep a strength a strength.

I don't know keep one vs keep both. I guess it also depends on their backups too. With that said-- the last 3 games they have looked good but we have to realize the competition they have been up against has been awful. WFT OL stinks and both Dallas and Philly have been ripped apart by injuries.

Maybe they are good anyway. Just saying it isn't a lock yet that these guys deserve big bucks as a tandem.
Tomlinson

Why would he talk to the Giants about 6 mil a year when they just paid Williams 16 mil who does none of the dirty work he does. On the DL you keep Lawrence you trade Tomlinson & Williams for whatever you can get tomorrow. We really need to evaluate talent and stop holding on to stopgap players this team is loaded with them. We are now in the same position we’ve been in for years routing for our terrible team to lose and hoping for other terrible teams to win is this not where at again even before week 8?

And thus another problem with overpaying cerain players...
Tomlinson will want a similar deal, and in another t to 1.5 years Lawrence will have his hands out for the big payday also... You going to tell me we are going to tie up over 45M for this group of DTs. That's nuts.
Chopperhatch....You do know Bud Dupree plays
Chris L. : 10/25/2020 7:26 am : link
linebacker right? This is part of the problem. If you let Williams walk and don't replace him with a comparable player you are spending money on someone else. We are deep at the position? We have three DL worth anything. Let him go and its one step backwards.

I thought the NYG had fielded interest for Dalvin Tomlinson, and not that they are trying to move him. We shall see.
