NFT: Cringe worthy sports franchise names you wish to change back

Black_Flag : 10/26/2020 9:28 pm
California Angels was ok ; never realized where they played till the longest however

Anaheim Angels better. Los Angeles angels just ghastly

Houston Texans. (Like what was wrong with Houston oilers?)

Miami Marlins not as good as Florida Marlins.

Any others?

Does MiLB count?

It actually is more of a fit.

Houston Oilers went to Tenn and there is probably a naming rights thing. Plus, the Titans kept BASICALLY the same colors as the Oilers. So even if it werent a naming rights issue (they were the Tennessee Oilers for a season or two I believe), would you really want the Oilers name and logo with a new color scheme?

Why is Florida Marlins better than Miami Marlins?

I think the only name that was changed and sounds stupid is the St. John's Red Storm. Couldve done better there.
Las Vegas Raiders
Reb8thVA : 10/26/2020 10:01 pm : link
Should still be the Oakland Raiders
it's not
Black_Flag : 10/26/2020 10:01 pm : link
I said Miami not as good as.

In other words Florida Marlins I like. And they never should have changed it.

Seminoles is OK.
I agree with the Las Vegas Raiders
moespree : 10/26/2020 10:06 pm : link
Should have renamed them and kept the Raiders name open in case they ever do get a new stadium there and put an expansion team back. Like they did with the Browns, by renaming them the Ravens.

I also prefer Washington Bullets to Wizards.
Los Angeles Lakers
Big Al : 10/26/2020 10:12 pm : link
and Utah Jazz are two examples of retaining meaningful names from their former city which are meaningless to their current city.
As opposed to the Dodgers
Big Al : 10/26/2020 10:17 pm : link
whose name had become obsolete even before they moved from Brooklyn.

In honor of Ken Stabler rename them the Las Vegas Snake Eyes. :-)

Daniel in MI : 10/26/2020 10:58 pm : link
Part of me thinks Dan Snyder so didn't want to make this change, that leaving the generic name is a partial FU to everyone that made him do it. Like, "Ok, you wanted us to change the name? Fine, we're now the WFT. You happy? Think this name change is great?" (They say it is because the name change thing is along league process, and may be WFT next year too. But I agree they could have had a plan in place way better than this. But, then this is a team even we can beat so...)

That's just Snyder giving everyone who pressured the change the middle finger. He'd make a killing in merchandise off a new name, he obviously doesn't want to.
As for cringeworthy names
Daniel in MI : 10/26/2020 11:02 pm : link
Lansing, MI got a MiLB team when I was in grad school there. I thought "Lansing Knights" just makes so much sense. What do Knights do? they joust with lances.

They went with the Lansing Lugnuts. I hated it at first. And the symbol they use is not even a nut, it's a bolt.

But, shows what I know, because it was just bad enough to be good, and it took off. Solid cap tip to the auto industry there. Their gear sold a lot early on. And the slogan "Go Nuts!" was a boon.

I thought it was due to licensing issues with Red Wolves and they will still end up the Washington Red Wolves. no?

Probably more lakes in the LA area than there is jazz in Utah.

The Oilers?
Tom in DC : 10/26/2020 11:16 pm : link
Doesn't the Titans franchise still own the Oilers trademarks? I don't think it was the same deal as the Ravens where they essentially abandoned their history and trademarks to the city.

I'm fine with the Las Vegas Raiders, which still sounds weird but 2020, whatever.

Though, I had wished they tweaked the uniforms a bit. I still see them as the Oakland/LA Raiders.

Eh. Whatever. The west side of the country is irrelevant. Let them do their weird thing ;-)
Cleveland Brown Bombers
aquidneck : 10/27/2020 12:37 am : link
Originally named after Joe Lewis and in that context pretty sure the "brown" was in reference to skin color, not the coach's last name.

The Baltimore/Washington Bullets is dubious for obvious reasons.

New York Titans kinda sucks. Get your own identity Jets-to-be. Second fiddle status built right in with that original nickname.

ooops, I sloppily read the thread title

I don't want any of the cringe worthy names I listed to change back. Lol.

What do you mean “what was wrong with the Houston Oilers”?
Leg of Theismann : 10/27/2020 1:04 am : link
That’s an entirely different franchise. The Titans still own that history from when they were the Oilers. It’s still a part of their history as a franchise. I don’t think they had the option of naming them the exact same thing in that particular instance (nor did they want to anyway because they were starting a new franchise and that would’ve been confusing).

I believe they chose the “Texans” in part because competing with the Cowboys for fans in the state (even in Houston) they knew was going to be difficult, so it was a calculated move knowing that was the most marketable name to try to incorporate all of Texas and maximize the fan base. Similar reasoning I think behind saying certain teams are from entire states or even regions— Tennessee, Minnesota, Arizona, Carolina, New England... the hope is to incorporate more fans if they think a single city by itself won’t give them a large enough fanbase (and I doubt the Cowboys would have approved of that franchise being from “Texas” as opposed to Houston, so it’s almost like they found a loophole with the name Texans).
For a great city...
BamaBlue : 10/27/2020 7:02 am : link
New York has some stupid team names.

The "Metropolitans' and 'Knickerbockers' realized their names were just too out-there and settled on just 'Mets' and 'Knicks' Better, but not good.

One MiLB name that I miss is from right here in CT

The Bridgeport Bluefish. I miss going to see a game here and there on a nice summer night. Dave Eiland was the manager when I first took the kids there. Nice venue, saw some old players like Juan Gonzalez trying to make comebacks. and the High Schools all played their "rivalry games" there. It was nice

SOme genius thought it was better to make the yard into a concert only amphitheater a few years ago and the Bluefish are no more. Still waiting on that first concert.

The stupidity of it was that with only 60 MiLB home games, it would have been no problem to do both. Now we have an empty rotting ball yard.

Then they shoul dhave called themselves the Tenessee oilers and stil had the oil rig on the helmet and everything; instead of the generic "titans". Either that or the "Texans" (cringe) should have bought I off them --naming rights or whatever) and they become the oilers

if the name changes happened before my time and were already there -- I don't mind them as much.

Lakers, Jazz, Mets, Knicks, Dodgers would all seem bad if they already hadn't happened.

(what is wrong with LA Dodgers anyway)?

Seeing the name "Colts" associated with Indianapolis still doesn't sit right with me....and its been damn near 40 years now. Imagine some fans in St Louis feel the same way about the Arizona Cardinals, Oakland fans too with the Raiders.

I was living in Orlando when they named the Magic and I wanted to vomit. Hated it then, hate it now.
