2011 Outback, great car but the wheel well panels are starting to rust out, seeing paint bubbling and visible rust. (I live in Syracuse, NY). My local shop says to spray with lanolin oil (contained in "Fluid Film". Any other tried and true methods?
...sand it down to sheet metal, then buy a good rust-resistant primer and touch up paint. If significant, you'll need a professional to paint it if you want it to look right.
For frame rust, I use a wire wheel on a drill to get it down as close to bare metal as possible, then hit it with tractor paint and a coat of Rustoleum.
Anyone use Ziebart or other types of rust coating services?
Just took over the lease on our 2018 Honda minivan and thinking about getting something to seal it from the rust. Curious to hear peoples experiences with these services?
Once rust gets in a car frame, it's very difficult to stop. I'd check to see if there's rust in other areas as well.
Keep your car in a garage if available, use a car cover in the winter time, wash your car often, and inspect and repair stone dings that break the paint, so the rust does not get started.
And get mudflaps...I don't understand why they aren't standard, and why people don't get them when they purchase their cars/trucks.
Purchase POR 15. This is the very best rust inhibitor on the market. It will work.
+1 on POR 15
Paint was peeling high on the lip of my daily driver's rear wheel opening and was on its way up to the vertical surface.
I taped the area off, feathered the good paint edge with 180 and 320 paper, hitting the rust at the same time, brushed on some POR-15 black top coat, and eventually I'll sand that and put a layer of the factory black over it. Already passes the 5 foot eyeball test.
My wife's Altima is only 5 years old, already seeing rust in undercarriage and spots along trim.
