I don’t understand why he’d be hanging up his mic. I’ve never heard anyone who has a more encyclopedic knowledge of sports. I mean, he’s like Rainman or something. Always really loved him on the overnight where he was sports radio gold. The best. He seemed to take some kind of a wired turn during the past years with the “bro” this and “bro” that. But still, he’s a fans fan. Hopefully he gets a nice send off at Umbertos Clam House.

Carton is and has always been sh*t. Can’t believe they are bringing him back. Desperate times.... I have heard that less commuting has really effected drive-time numbers and revenue.
I mean I knew this was coming given all the recent rumblings, but this sucks hard. Some poster alluded to the hbo documentary being a publicity stunt for carton's return. I dont really see it that way, but the timing is interesting.
I'm gonna really miss Joe. He was funny without trying. He and Evan were the perfect mix of good sports talk and humor and the best part of the fan for a long time. Now we get carton back...
I hope Joe checks in every so often. With the Mets getting Cohen and the Jets likely doing a total rebuild, he was going to be a must listen.
At night in Charlottesville, I could pick up the Fan, and I used to listen to Joe on the overnight show. I thought he was a fun listen. Over the years, it seems like he kind of became a caricature with the tortured Jet fan routine. I do have fond memories of the overnight show though. He was the rare sports radio host who never was condescending to his callers, and he was opinionated while still being friendly and funny.
Because of how bad it will look to put him back in the morning with Boomer straight away. BUT I'd bet any amount of money within 6 months they'll find some excuse to switch Carton and Gio. And it will be Boomer and Carton in the morning and Gio and Evan in the afternoon.

Ha, funny. One summer night in Maine (Acadia Natl. Park) I drove up a hill and picked up WFAN...Steve Somers though.
Ah the pre-smart phone age. When picking up WFAN from hundreds of miles away was neat.

Well put. A nice man who probably hung in a little too long. That he is being replaced by a classless turd and thief who preyed on listeners like Cartoon is a disgrace. I'll never listen. FAN management has disgraced themselves.
the comps and hits at Francesa are neither fair nor accurate.
It's apples to oranges. Francesa was 30+ year institution and a pillar of FAN. I had no problem with his retirement "tour".
. . .
What is neither fair nor accurate?
-25 years to 28 years of hosting shows on WFAN radio
-both hosted solo and duet shows
-both had dedicated fans who called in regularly, adding value to their shows
The Pope's year long departure tour was strange. He made a huge deal out of it.
...or is he saying, my last show will be on XXXX date.
Just to echo everyone here, I really did enjoy Joe in the overnights. He seemed to talk more hockey then too (as did Sommers when he was 'Captain Midnight'). He and Evan are a good pair.
I forget who the Mets outfielder was they were talking to a Mets reporter in Spring Training and there was an outfielder that had an Italian last name. I think it was Darren Ceciliani. So Ed Coleman, drops his name and you can hear Evan chuckle and mumble his name in anticipation of Joe's reaction. Joe inquisitively asks "Darren Cecilliani!?!?" "Who is that?" "Sounds like someone from Manalapan [or whatever town he referenced]."

Funny I have the same kind of memory. I used to catch the FAN down in VA beach at night and listen to Joe. Always thought he was a easy listen.
but always felt he was genuine. His schtick got a little excessive over the years but I actually think that's really him, haha. The two of them worked well together.
Evan deserves better than Carton. Policing the class clown gets old really quick. Ohh yeah and he's a piece of shit too.

I never got the hate for Joe. He’s act only became excessive because the Jets are a total clown show. I think that’s where the genuineness comes in. I think the hiring of Gase snapped him.
Like listening to him admit not firing Gase is best for the Jets but
I discovered Joe B. on the radio the night of June 30th 1999. I was 15 years old.
For those of you who are Mets/Knicks fans, maybe you remember how awful a night that was. While the Knicks were selecting "French Toast" Fred Weiss in the NBA Draft, the Mets blew a game to the Marlins as Benitez gave up a walk-off home run to Kotsay in the bottom of the 10th.
Needless to say Joe was an rare form that night.
I listened to him on the overnight during my college years and then during the middays while sitting at my desk during the workday. I'll miss his commentary.
I loved Joe and find Carton's voice and shtick incredibly abrasive (to say nothing of his moral/legal issues).
Joe's a funny dude who clearly appreciated his position. His rants were great - but there was still a lightheartedness and humor to them. Something that other hosts - notably latter-day Francesa - lack, and made them very hard to listen to.
I hope the Mets in the Cohen era give him something to enjoy in the evenings in Florida when he's done golfing for the day.
so he dodged eating crow in real time watching that guy strut up and down the side lines. I would have loved to have tuned in every Monday to hear it.
Yeah but he owns it. Which is a breath of fresh air. Francesca would probably just hang up on guys and pontificate how it isn’t really McCarthys fault and every HC would lose his team with the Dak injury, except if the Sports Pope himself was coaching the team.
he entertained me for a long time and made Evan Roberts bearable. I'll never listen to a second of anything with his new partner involved in it. Same for Michael Kay. I'm glad there's so many other options now.
Joe frequently mentions he was wrong on McCarthy and usually in a funny, self deprecating manner. Same with Evan. Others have mentioned it, but I like how he doesn't pretend to be a know it all... not that he isn't knowledgeable. I really hope that Carton does find his way back to Boomer. They worked well even if I didn't care much for them. He's going to ruin Evan if he stays.
...Carton needs attention and will try to steal the show. Which will be unfortunate because Evan really is good at explaining his sports opinions, whether you disagree or not.
I used to listen to him when he was on 101.5 in the midday, when Imus was still going strong.
Although, in general, the sports gambling really turns me off. If he stays off it, I will enjoy the show. I like JJ on the radio too... but his show actually angled at gambling really makes me nauseous.
That being said, I liked Beningo. He'll be missed. Malusis does nothing for me. Carlin was the worst. Giannatti sounds like he's trying too hard to do Carton's shtick and falling short.
...Carton needs attention and will try to steal the show. Which will be unfortunate because Evan really is good at explaining his sports opinions, whether you disagree or not.
And I feel Carton is going to drown him out.
But we'll see.
I agree. I don't side with all of Evan's opinions (though its more than most) but he always explains himself well and has something to back it up.
I don’t listen often these days, but have always enjoyed him. Never liked Carton with Boomer. Thought he was impossibly smug and self-satisfied. Not at all interested in listening to a felon shill for Fan duel. Great testimonial for a gambling site. Evan is pretty good and I liked his solo stuff in the past but won’t listen to Carton ever. Hope this move blows up in Fan’s faces. It’s pretty disgusting to welcome this guy back after he leveraged his FAN profile to steal from people.
he points out during his retirement announcement that none of his favorite teams won a title during his 25 years on the air. His last show will be next Friday.

I agree...I think it’s a very apt comparison. Francesa sucked up the attention of his retirement tour for a full year (while desperately trying to claim he was above it)
Joe B probably didn’t want to announce this even a week in advance of his last day. I’d bet he had to get talked into allowing a little love from the station and his fans
I was listening to Mike's last show this year, by coincidence. He had 30 minutes. Talked about himself for 15, and then took 5 calls before signing off. Fully the first three calls were prank calls. It was delicious.
He was as aggravated as always. Didn't disappoint. Miss that guy.
they would bring him back after his arrest. He wasnt that good to begin with.
it's not odd. It is just how some big companies operate, especially ones affiliated or associated with media. It's all about ratings. Fuck the truth. Fuck what is right. If a steaming pile of shit sitting behind the MIC could guarantee a good ratings # WFAN would employ it.

I'll miss you bro, call in sometimes to talk Mets.
Anyway, I always liked Beningo or at least found him entertaining. Carton, not so much at all.
+ 1
Joe was always a good listen. A regular guy and sports fan, not a know it all
Well said. I loved the overnights.
Umbeeeeeeeeeeeerto's Clam House!
25 years on air. Not too shabby - ( New Window )

Carton sucks.
Guaranteed.
Now, contrast Joe Bs departure to the Pope’s, where he made a year long dramatized spectacle over his retirement.
The difference is night and day.

But he should NEVER have come back. Reminded me of an old fighter who thought had one more good fight left and got clobbered.

Imus in the morning, Mike and the Mad Dog in the PM, and Joe overnight. It's turned into more of a pop culture station now.
Who did the mid-day back then?
a few combos. Somers and Salzberg. Jody McDonald and Sid (Skidmark) Rosenberg. I think Bill Mazer for a while.

That about says it.
So do I. Southern Maryland. I catch Yankees games at night sometimes
