NFT: That time of the year! List horror movies that you enjoy....

Jints in Carolina : 10/29/2020 8:41 am
If anyone knows me they know I am a John Carpenter's Halloween super nerd. I cannot get enough of that movie and I watch it every Halloween.

But there are other classic horror films out there. What are some of your favorites, new and old?

It Follows is one I recently watched. I highly recommend!

@GmaninDC - which Friday the 13th is your favorite? I'm partial to 4 myself, and think Jason goes to Hell is underrated.

Great minds!. #4 is my favorite. Love when Tommy shaves his head and starts chopping Jason up. I just watched that 2 days ago.

Been binge watching AMC and SyFy all month. lol

me too.

I had to catch it and DVR it. It's not free on demand. Every other episode is except 4

Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite horror series.
Dave in Hoboken : 10/29/2020 10:52 am : link
Love all of those movies outside of parts 5 and 6. To me, the original is the greatest horror movie of all time. I love Halloween, but to me that movie and Michael Myers isn't scary enough. However, Halloween is still my second favorite series after Nightmare on Elm Street.
Son of Frankenstein

Yeah, I thought it was pretty well done. A few character decisions and twists don't really stand up to much scrutiny, but it's got some excellent scenes.

If a horror movie manages to make me think, "I'd be so fucked in that situation, going up against ______," it has a level of success. The Invisible Man certainly manages that.

See, I was going to mention that, but it's such a tough movie to pitch to someone. It's at its scariest when you're not actually aware it's a "horror movie." Imagine knowing nothing of that film and then sitting down to watch it. But it's so hard to deliver that experience to anyone.
I think of them all The Exorcist holds up pretty well
PatersonPlank : 10/29/2020 12:28 pm : link
This is my favorite.

I also like:
Carrie
Saw2
Rosemary's Baby
The Omen
The Poltergeist scared the hell out of me when I first saw it.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 10/29/2020 12:31 pm : link
Though I watched it recently & it wasn't as scary as I remember. And JoBeth Williams is an absolute fox in that movie.

The Shining is up there too. COME AND PLAY WITH US DANNY. FOREVER...AND EVER...AND EVER.

I also like all of the Texas Chainsaw massacres (not necessarily halloween holiday related).

My favorite to watch with my kids is: Hocus Pocus, they love it and its cult good.

I watched one nightmare on elm street, not a huge fan, but somewhat watchable.

Same thing for Nightmare on Elm Street 3, for some reason they skip that one and go to 4. Weird.
Haunt was a fantastic one that I believe is on Amazon or Netflix

You are right it's not for everyone. It does sneak up on you and suddenly, whoa. But good is good and Audition is a kind of masterpiece and should be seen by all horror fans. But it is extreme, for sure.

The book got to me way back when -- the sort of thing reading alone at night with a single lamp in an otherwise dark and silent house made me go check the windows to be sure they were closed. Never thought anything he wrote after that lived up to it.

I thought I was the only one who watched them back to back. The music (if that’s what you call it) in those movies creates such an intense and frightening mood.

I also love the Friday the 13th movies. My favorite is the one where the blonde haired girl dresses up as his mother (with her head right behind her on some sort of a sick alter).

That's why I watched it with my youngest (Poltergeist). I remember after seeing that movie I couldn't sleep with the closet door open and I had to look under my bed for clowns. My youngest loved it.

Fun genre to watch with kids. There is more family friendly "horror" than some people might think and not kids movies especially if you count movies like Gremlins, The Sixth Sense, The Conjuring and more (speaking of...my kids have been bugging me to drive by the conjuring house in RI, I told them we would today or tomorrow before Halloween).

Its always temporary, and he is going to show up in the next scene trying to kill them again...you know it. So just cut off his foot for christ sake!
