If anyone knows me they know I am a John Carpenter's Halloween super nerd. I cannot get enough of that movie and I watch it every Halloween.
But there are other classic horror films out there. What are some of your favorites, new and old?
It Follows is one I recently watched. I highly recommend!

and not a movie but Michael Jackson Thriller is a 15 minute film that I still enjoy.
nice!
It got panned because there was no Michael Myers, but it has grown a cult following over the years.
Also, the '90 version of 'IT'. Made me scared of clowns, which lasts to this day. I hate those MFers.

LOL I loved that take on Halloween...I think it was ESPN right?
My other favorites are The Exorcist, Pet Semetary (the original) and The Strangers.
My favorite Halloween movie to enjoy with my kids who are still very young is Nightmare Before Christmas.
Also, Scream remains pretty solid. And the Wrong Turn series is utterly disturbed.
I still love a good haunted house flick.
Quote:
Bob Ryan (Boston Globe): "Night before Halloween, 1978. The state of Illinois sends two people in a stationwagon to pick up Myers -- his middle-aged doctor and a female nurse. There's problem No. 1. They arrive in a torrential downpour, then find all the wackos wandering around outside the hospital. There's problem No. 2. Doctor Loomis jumps out of the car, leaving the nurse alone in the car. There's problem No. 3. It's almost like they wanted this ... this maniac to escape!"

Yes, Simmons article from back in the day.
Movies:
Don't Breathe (2016)
Us (2019)
A Quiet Place (2018)
Train to Busan (2016) - Korean zombie movie
Alive (2020) - Korean zombie movie
TV:
Dark (2017) - German show on Netflix, its fantastic. Its more mystery/thriller but it fits this time of year
Kingdom (2019) - Korean series (2 seasons) about a royal family and a mysterious plague
Black Mirror - Metalhead (2017) - I wouldn't consider all of the episodes horror, but I really liked Metalhead, it was a great take on the post-apocalyptic genre and instead of a virus or zombies, its robot dogs who kill humans
Funny you say that. Wife and I took today/tomorrow off and are finally going to watch Midsommer later today.
There was one TV movie I enjoyed around Halloween that U haven't seen in years. Anyone remember Dark Night Of The Scarecrow?
But I am a Jason guy. I have seen every Friday the 13th at least 20 times. I just don't like #9 and Jason X. Those were garbage..
@GmaninDC - which Friday the 13th is your favorite? I'm partial to 4 myself, and think Jason goes to Hell is underrated.

I do like Halloween II but I think they went over the top on the gore and the story was weak IMO.

Great minds!. #4 is my favorite. Love when Tommy shaves his head and starts chopping Jason up. I just watched that 2 days ago.
Been binge watching AMC and SyFy all month. lol
Poltergeist was a fun family horror movie. It had everything, clowns, skeletons, the light, hallucinations, creepy old people, midgets, and graves.
holds up well.

do you just watch Halloween or both Halloween & II? Since they are continuous, I think you have to enjoy both together to really get the story - plus the big why reveal isn't made until the end of 2.

Which one is the year of the pumpkin?. The TV commercials and countdown?
I thought it was terrific. Enjoy.
2) The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) Karloff's best interpretation of the monster.
3) Jaws (1975) Damn you Spielberg, I'll never swim in the ocean again! Watched this when it opened IN THE FRONT ROW!!!
4) Night of the Living Dead (1968) Romero's take on Zombies has been the template for multiple movies and TV.
5) The Silence of the Lambs (1991) Hopkins and Foster are magnificent in creating horror/suspense.
6) The Cat People (1942) If you don't know who RKO producer Val Lewton is, you're missing one of the great ones. A psychological suspense horror film with sexual overtones and amazing photography.

Halloween III
Silver Shamrock!
That was actually based on a movie, a good show.
nightmare on elm street 1 and 3
It
Night of the Creeps
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Something Wicked This Way Comes
I also like all of the Texas Chainsaw massacres (not necessarily halloween holiday related).
My favorite to watch with my kids is: Hocus Pocus, they love it and its cult good.
I watched one nightmare on elm street, not a huge fan, but somewhat watchable.
that movie scared the shit out of me as a kid.

I had to catch it and DVR it. It's not free on demand. Every other episode is except 4

A made for TV movie I have always enjoyed
that movie scared the shit out of me as a kid.
The kitchen scene scarred me
"His fodder vas Frankenstein, but his mother vas the light-en-ing"
VHS
IT (remake)
30 Days of night
Dracula Untold
Rob Zombies remake version of Halloween.
28 Days Later
28 Weeks Later
On a lighter note
Zombieland
Army of Darkness (Evil Dead 3)
Shaun of the Dead
Horsehack from Welcome back Kotter has a 2 minute cameo before he is killed!
Return of the Living Dead
Audition - Miike (incredible slow burning J-Horror)
Let's Scare Jessica to Death
Evil Dead 2
original Stepford Wives - 1975
Shaun of the Dead
of course all the Romero's are good esp original Dawn of the Dead
Suspiria (always a classic)
Zombie by Lucio Fulci (best italian zombie flick)
Errementari - ( New Window )
Yeah, I thought it was pretty well done. A few character decisions and twists don't really stand up to much scrutiny, but it's got some excellent scenes.
If a horror movie manages to make me think, "I'd be so fucked in that situation, going up against ______," it has a level of success. The Invisible Man certainly manages that.
Audition - Miike (incredible slow burning J-Horror)
See, I was going to mention that, but it's such a tough movie to pitch to someone. It's at its scariest when you're not actually aware it's a "horror movie." Imagine knowing nothing of that film and then sitting down to watch it. But it's so hard to deliver that experience to anyone.
I also like:
Carrie
Saw2
Rosemary's Baby
The Omen
The Shining is up there too. COME AND PLAY WITH US DANNY. FOREVER...AND EVER...AND EVER.
I also like all of the Texas Chainsaw massacres (not necessarily halloween holiday related).

Same thing for Nightmare on Elm Street 3, for some reason they skip that one and go to 4. Weird.
Them. First horror movies I can remember seeing.

You are right it's not for everyone. It does sneak up on you and suddenly, whoa. But good is good and Audition is a kind of masterpiece and should be seen by all horror fans. But it is extreme, for sure.
I've seen it. Not bad, but I can give you ten films more extreme.

I agree... I just wish you could have someone watch it without telling them what genre it belongs to. I haven't been able to pull that off.

The book got to me way back when -- the sort of thing reading alone at night with a single lamp in an otherwise dark and silent house made me go check the windows to be sure they were closed. Never thought anything he wrote after that lived up to it.
They just started filming the second one.

yep yep
if the original.. then yes..
if the remake... meh..
@GmaninDC - which Friday the 13th is your favorite? I'm partial to 4 myself, and think Jason goes to Hell is underrated.
I thought I was the only one who watched them back to back. The music (if that’s what you call it) in those movies creates such an intense and frightening mood.
I also love the Friday the 13th movies. My favorite is the one where the blonde haired girl dresses up as his mother (with her head right behind her on some sort of a sick alter).

Part 2....my favorite Friday the 13th
It (either version...newer one is great!)
Halloween 1
Nightmare on Elm St 1
Jaws
The Conjuring
Sinister
Paranormal Activity
and for kicks...Zombieland
The Shining is up there too. COME AND PLAY WITH US DANNY. FOREVER...AND EVER...AND EVER.
That's why I watched it with my youngest (Poltergeist). I remember after seeing that movie I couldn't sleep with the closet door open and I had to look under my bed for clowns. My youngest loved it.
Fun genre to watch with kids. There is more family friendly "horror" than some people might think and not kids movies especially if you count movies like Gremlins, The Sixth Sense, The Conjuring and more (speaking of...my kids have been bugging me to drive by the conjuring house in RI, I told them we would today or tomorrow before Halloween).

Yes. When Jason’s mom has her head whacked off with a machete.
"It" remake is solid.
Quiet Place was really good.
Saw series
Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween were scary as hell to kids who weren't supposed to be watching.
Final Destination
I liked it...both I and II

It’s actually on AMC right now!
Its always temporary, and he is going to show up in the next scene trying to kill them again...you know it. So just cut off his foot for christ sake!
