NFT: That time of the year! List horror movies that you enjoy....

Jints in Carolina : 10/29/2020 8:41 am
If anyone knows me they know I am a John Carpenter's Halloween super nerd. I cannot get enough of that movie and I watch it every Halloween.

But there are other classic horror films out there. What are some of your favorites, new and old?

It Follows is one I recently watched. I highly recommend!

and not a movie but Michael Jackson Thriller is a 15 minute film that I still enjoy.

With Vincent Price. My Middle School showed it in Assembly. Auditorium full of kids, screaming our fool heads off. Scared the crap out of me. Loved it.

Halloween III Season Of The Witch

It got panned because there was no Michael Myers, but it has grown a cult following over the years.
Halloween, the original...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 10/29/2020 8:54 am : link
Bob Ryan (Boston Globe): "Night before Halloween, 1978. The state of Illinois sends two people in a stationwagon to pick up Myers -- his middle-aged doctor and a female nurse. There's problem No. 1. They arrive in a torrential downpour, then find all the wackos wandering around outside the hospital. There's problem No. 2. Doctor Loomis jumps out of the car, leaving the nurse alone in the car. There's problem No. 3. It's almost like they wanted this ... this maniac to escape!"

Also, the '90 version of 'IT'. Made me scared of clowns, which lasts to this day. I hate those MFers.

LOL I loved that take on Halloween...I think it was ESPN right?
I have never been a big fan of Halloween (the actual day)
Chris684 : 10/29/2020 8:57 am : link
But I always make sure to mark the occasion by watching the original Halloween. It is in my opinion the greatest horror movie of all time. The plot is so simple but so terrifying. The music, the mask and Donald Pleasance all make it what it is today.

My other favorites are The Exorcist, Pet Semetary (the original) and The Strangers.

My favorite Halloween movie to enjoy with my kids who are still very young is Nightmare Before Christmas.
The Omen is absolutely terrifying

Midsommar , Cabin in the Woods
dlauster : 10/29/2020 8:59 am : link
Recently re-watched Phantasm, the scariest movie of my childhood. Man that one doesn’t hold up well to time.

Also, Scream remains pretty solid. And the Wrong Turn series is utterly disturbed.

I still love a good haunted house flick.

some more recent stuff below.

Movies:

Don't Breathe (2016)

Us (2019)

A Quiet Place (2018)

Train to Busan (2016) - Korean zombie movie

Alive (2020) - Korean zombie movie

TV:

Dark (2017) - German show on Netflix, its fantastic. Its more mystery/thriller but it fits this time of year

Kingdom (2019) - Korean series (2 seasons) about a royal family and a mysterious plague

Black Mirror - Metalhead (2017) - I wouldn't consider all of the episodes horror, but I really liked Metalhead, it was a great take on the post-apocalyptic genre and instead of a virus or zombies, its robot dogs who kill humans

I am going to watch The Invisible Man 2020 this weekend

The Original Halloween and Halloween II
LTIsTheGreatest : 10/29/2020 9:14 am : link
Are my favorites. As often happens thigh, they ruined it by making too many sequels after that, one worse than the nexr. Should have left it with Michael Myers burning up in the hospital at the end of the 2nd one.

There was one TV movie I enjoyed around Halloween that U haven't seen in years. Anyone remember Dark Night Of The Scarecrow?
I always liked

the Saw movies

For about 12 years now. Never changed it. People love it!

But I am a Jason guy. I have seen every Friday the 13th at least 20 times. I just don't like #9 and Jason X. Those were garbage..
@ Jints
Giantsfan79 : 10/29/2020 9:38 am : link
do you just watch Halloween or both Halloween & II? Since they are continuous, I think you have to enjoy both together to really get the story - plus the big why reveal isn't made until the end of 2.

@GmaninDC - which Friday the 13th is your favorite? I'm partial to 4 myself, and think Jason goes to Hell is underrated.

The Conjuring is a favorite of mine. Don't Breathe and Ready or Not are two recent ones that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I do like Halloween II but I think they went over the top on the gore and the story was weak IMO.
Sleepaway Camp.

Also just started the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre the other day but had to turn it off when kids came into the room. Will give it another shot this weekend.

just started getting in to horror movies so I'm watching some of the less gory classics again.

Poltergeist was a fun family horror movie. It had everything, clowns, skeletons, the light, hallucinations, creepy old people, midgets, and graves.

holds up well.

Classic Classics!
JohnF : 10/29/2020 10:05 am : link
1) Psycho (1960) Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece of suspense and horror.
2) The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) Karloff's best interpretation of the monster.
3) Jaws (1975) Damn you Spielberg, I'll never swim in the ocean again! Watched this when it opened IN THE FRONT ROW!!!
4) Night of the Living Dead (1968) Romero's take on Zombies has been the template for multiple movies and TV.
5) The Silence of the Lambs (1991) Hopkins and Foster are magnificent in creating horror/suspense.
6) The Cat People (1942) If you don't know who RKO producer Val Lewton is, you're missing one of the great ones. A psychological suspense horror film with sexual overtones and amazing photography.
The original Village Of The Damned
ghost718 : 10/29/2020 10:07 am : link
the sequel is also kinda underrated, takes a little while to get going.

but I have watched all of them that have been on tv...they wont play 2 or 3 though, which is upsetting.

I also like all of the Texas Chainsaw massacres (not necessarily halloween holiday related).

My favorite to watch with my kids is: Hocus Pocus, they love it and its cult good.

I watched one nightmare on elm street, not a huge fan, but somewhat watchable.

Love all of those movies outside of parts 5 and 6. To me, the original is the greatest horror movie of all time. I love Halloween, but to me that movie and Michael Myers isn't scary enough. However, Halloween is still my second favorite series after Nightmare on Elm Street.
