The Indians have placed Brad Hand on outright waivers with the intention of declining his $10 million club option if he goes unclaimed, sources say. If a team does claim him, the Indians won't be responsible for paying his $1 million buyout. Hand posted a 2.05 ERA in 2020.

#Indians payroll cuts this offseason are underway. This should be a surprise to no one. Expect the Tribe to trim about $40-$50M this winter which includes the eventual trade of Lindor.

This is crazy. Hand went 16-for-16 in save opportunities this year (leading the AL), with a 1.37 FIP, 0.773 WHIP and 7.25 K/BB. He's an absolute bargain at $10 million.
Guess I'll start writing my "where will Cleveland trade Francisco Lindor" article right damn now.
Wonder if the Yankes turn down Britton's 2-year option (at $13M/per)
Mets are 10th but 9 in front of them are all mostly small market teams, legit shot he falls to them.
I liked the JD Davis, Rosario, Baty rumor a bit more. Would rather give up Rosario than Gimenez. Lindor is a star, but he's also an upcoming FA

Ginn and a lottery ticket like Newton for Lindor, thanks! Expand it for Carrasco if possible.

Not realistic. JD Davis and Rosario are making about 6 million dollars in 2021. Indians are cutting a very good reliever making 10. They are going to want VERY cheap and many years of control. Not 28 year old Davis and taking back cash.
Pittsburgh, Texas, Detroit, Boston, Baltimore, Arizona, KC, Colorado, LAA, Mets
On paper, I see Boston, Colorado and LAA as the most likely to snipe him.
They should start the negotiations in earnest now. Of course, they won't. That's pie in the sky.

100% agree. If the owners were smart they would make a proactive positive gesture of completely opening the books to player's association leadership and start outlining a revenue's linked model emulating the NHL or NBA. Some form of a cap floor linked to team revenues, some form of a ceiling/luxury tax, etc. The major complicating factor is the wild difference in revenues team to team based on attendance, but they should be able to figure that out with a more variable cap floor tied to team revenues and big market to small market revenue sharing.
all sides need to admit the current system sucks and just copy the other leagues to create a viable system going forward - giving each side some of the things they want (like a quicker path to UFA for the players, which they deserve).
But of course none of that will happen. this offseason will be a blood bath that only increases hostility heading into labor talks that were already going to be extremely hostile even when revenues were projecting upward instead of downward.
They can pick him up, let him close for 4 months, then trade him and only be on the hook for about $6- 6.5M. Not bad for getting an asset for free.
If that's the case it could well mean that ALL the teams passed and NO team is going to claim him for $10M.
Am I missing something?
Seriously makes no sense to me. Maybe there's some bonus they wouldn't have been able to get out of? Boggles the mind - and feel bad for their fans.
There was 16 former Pirates in the playoffs, they're basically a major league feeder system at this point. Glasnow, Cole, Happ, Meadows, Morton, etc.
You're forgetting that the owners took a big hit financially from Covid this year. No way MLB forces an owner to sell the team simply for trying to cut a little payroll in a down year.
And the more I think of it, the more telling it is that the Indians couldn't find a single trade partner for Hand. If no team was even willing to give up a few marginal prospects for Hand, what makes anyone think that any team is going to claim him on waivers and take on the $10M contract?
Unless he’s a jerkoff

They picked it up.

I’m pulling for him. Apparently all the analytics geeks in the front office are upset about this and I’m really hoping an old school baseball man tells them to shove it up their asses and leads them to great things. I’m a big analytics guy when it comes to certain things but I think it’s out of control in baseball. It’s ruining the game. Baseball is supposed to be entertainment, the extent that these analytics have taken over the game may potentially lead to winning more if used properly, but it’s certainly not making the game more enjoyable. I don’t tune in to a game to watch a battle of the computers.
