Peter King: Nobody wants Dwayne Haskins

NoPeanutz : 11/2/2020 4:34 pm
Quote:
despite earlier trade optimism, NBC Sports’ Peter King reported on Monday that the team may only be able to flip the former first-rounder for a late-round draft pick should they try to move him before Tuesday.

“I think I find it hard to believe that a team would trade anything but a day-three draft pick for Dwayne Haskins by Tuesday’s trading deadline,” King wrote in his weekly FMIA column. “First, he was not universally loved coming out of Ohio State, and most people around Washington believe owner Daniel Snyder had his fingers on the draft-grade scale before the team picked him 15th overall in 2019.”

I think this is hindsight. Haskins hype was everywhere in the Winter, Spring and Summer of 2019. Only when 6 teams who needed QBs passed on him (AZ, NYG, PIT, MIA, CIN, DEN) could we be sure that there was not so much interest in him.

If Washington doesn't take him at 15, who takes him and in which round? Did MIA, PIT, DEN and CIN etc all think he was garbage and would not have taken him in any round?

He was called a racist for picking DJ over Haskins. DJ still may not turn out to be the answer, but certainly Haskins isn't.
I bet the Cowboys would take him right now.

But the Washington Team is not going to trade him there.
No time for a victory lap...
Skittlebish : 11/2/2020 4:56 pm : link
...as there is at least a small chance the Giants could select a new QB within the next 2 drafts. As for Haskins, who knows if there is anything to salvage, and while I rationally know there is no warranted comparison, my mind does wonder if that system is creating another potential bust.

And most analysts are still trying to save face by hoping DJ doesnt succeed. That makes DJs potential success so much more tasty if it happens. It would be cool to see the fans and board rally behind him for the season before the Lawrence talk.

The question wasn't a Haskins/DJ binary.

Thus far, all we know is that DG didn't pick the worst answer (Haskins).

I was one that wanted Haskins. He was drafted into a terrible situation in year one with the owner drafting him for a lame duck coach that wanted nothing to do with him. Add absolutely nothing to work with on offense besides AP and a rookie in McCaurin (spelling?). Year two has been a disaster. So he has a lot to overcome such a rough beginning.

Nevertheless, he's not a Giant so it's all about DJ. Here's to hoping he surpassing Haskins in victories for this season soon lol

From fans? No. He took a ton of heat for taking him in general, or over Josh Allen and a few other players, but Haskins, there wasn't much of a hankering for him from the fans.
It's really hard to say Gettleman has done ANYTHING
M.S. : 11/2/2020 5:09 pm : link

right in light of the sorry ass state of the Giants.

A secondary in disarray despite significant draft capital devoted to it. Same with the offensive line. No WR on the roster that any defense really cares about; and same goes for TE. Oh, and did I mention we have jack shit for a pass rush.

I've read on this site about how Gettleman will be around next season. Yea, to clean out his office.

Hard to say. We do know Baker was horrible last season, who knows if the light would've gone on for him or not.
Luck is a big factor in the success and failure of NFL players.
81_Great_Dane : 11/2/2020 5:13 pm : link
Haskins has been unlucky, and hasn't risen above that luck. Rosen, also unlucky, but his luck may have turned since he landed on Tampa's practice squad and can learn from Bruce Arians and Tom Brady, out of the spotlight. Tom Brady, in turn, landed in the ideal spot, where he could learn from a coach who could see what he had. Lamar Jackson was lucky to land in Baltimore and not with the Jets. If the Jets had drafted Jackson and the Ravens had taken Darnold, I doubt Jackson would be an MVP level player and Darnold would probably be better.

We've all seen guys who were straight-up bad, but there are also guys who thrived once they got into the right situation. I thought Haskins flashed last year but clearly is flatlining this season. Maybe he'll be better somewhere else — but nobody's going to give up much to see.
And Pat Mahomes was lucky
NoPeanutz : 11/2/2020 5:16 pm : link
to land in Kansas City, a team that went 13-3 with Alex Smith the year prior, instead of getting picked at the top of the draft where he would have had to claw his way out of the swamp with a crappy team and no pieces in place (like, say, Mayfield or Darnold).
....and everyone's favorite GM in waiting at ESPN said Haskins was
Tom in NY : 11/2/2020 5:18 pm : link
better than Jones.

I know they all miss on players, but the vitriol the Giants had to swallow from some in the media after not picking Haskins was disgusting.

be mindful of how Haskins looked surrounded by a near elite college talent level. He's got a lot of warts.

Fields looks like a stronger pro prospect, but right now he's not in my top 5.

for not picking the wrong the QB. Meanwhile the team is sitting here floundering with 1 win as we turn the page into November after three offseasons of his awful "other" decisions.

You know, maybe you're right...passing on Haskins (and Darnold and Rosen) is a key highlight for our GM. As there have been so few.

There was
Andrew in Austin : 11/2/2020 5:30 pm : link
a binary media view that DG/NY Giants were a racist organization and that we passed on the better candidate due to his skin color. Didn't make much sense to me given we had a very long tenured GM here who clearly wasn't white, but whatever.

Sometimes things are what they seem. NY didn't think enough of DH and felt that DJ was the better candidate. We dodged a bullet w/ DH. Hopefully DJ can flip the switch and make something happen this year.

The Chiefs were lucky to get Mahomes, is more like it. They went from a perennial division round loser, to Super Bowl Champions. All for adding the right QB.

I wouldn't categorize it as luck. They aggressively moved up in a trade with Buffalo - gave up draft capital - because they saw a potential game-breaking player.

I think you ave to admire the commitment and the willingness to go for it.
re: luck
Toth029 : 11/2/2020 6:24 pm : link
So why isn't Haskins held accountable? He has huge maturity issues and red flags on and off the field. Who brags about their stats (which weren't great to begin with) in a loss? Who makes "fans" attend a post draft party? Who sneaks in a family member during Covid when your head coach has cancer? Why is it a second coaching staff who has flipped on his preparation?

He's an issue and who knows how many really want him.

Guarantee you. If Jones and Haskins both hit FA, Jones is picked up in a heartbeat and Haskins waits.

Nah, bro.
Haskins has alienated not one, but two coaching staffs, and acted like a flake off the field. There's a big difference between "he's not who we would have chosen" and "we're not going to try to make the best of this, especially with our jobs on the line". Given what he's earning as a #15 pick vs. where he could have wound up, I'd say Haskins' luck has been alright. He's a qb, so he'll get more chances, flake or not.
AFAIK, only two people said DG didn't pick Haskins because he's black

Very poor predictor, especially for a pocket passer.

Yea, complete bullshit. People thought he threw a pretty nice ball, but most everybody was saying how concerned they were over his sweating profusely throughout. People also saw him get a lot of attention from Shurmur. He threw a nice ball in a shell....that was all that came from that.

I wanted both. I thought that Campbell was going to be a star and McLaurin was reportedly a stud special teamer so I thought he would be a perfect fit here because if he didn't work out as a WR at least the Giants had a good special teams player.

McLaurin was a great pick for Washington. A rare WR hit for WFT.

NFW. He looked really out of sorts in NDSU's lone game versus Central Arkansas. And I don't think he's going to play their spring schedule...

Fields is playing lights out right now. He's changed his body, his stroke, and he's very sharp right out of the gate.
