despite earlier trade optimism, NBC Sports’ Peter King reported on Monday that the team may only be able to flip the former first-rounder for a late-round draft pick should they try to move him before Tuesday.
“I think I find it hard to believe that a team would trade anything but a day-three draft pick for Dwayne Haskins by Tuesday’s trading deadline,” King wrote in his weekly FMIA column. “First, he was not universally loved coming out of Ohio State, and most people around Washington believe owner Daniel Snyder had his fingers on the draft-grade scale before the team picked him 15th overall in 2019.” |
I think this is hindsight. Haskins hype was everywhere in the Winter, Spring and Summer of 2019. Only when 6 teams who needed QBs passed on him (AZ, NYG, PIT, MIA, CIN, DEN) could we be sure that there was not so much interest in him.
If Washington doesn't take him at 15, who takes him and in which round? Did MIA, PIT, DEN and CIN etc all think he was garbage and would not have taken him in any round?

The question wasn't a Haskins/DJ binary.
Thus far, all we know is that DG didn't pick the worst answer (Haskins).
yeah amnesia is a huge issue here...
:-)
I was one that wanted Haskins. He was drafted into a terrible situation in year one with the owner drafting him for a lame duck coach that wanted nothing to do with him. Add absolutely nothing to work with on offense besides AP and a rookie in McCaurin (spelling?). Year two has been a disaster. So he has a lot to overcome such a rough beginning.
Nevertheless, he's not a Giant so it's all about DJ. Here's to hoping he surpassing Haskins in victories for this season soon lol
From fans? No. He took a ton of heat for taking him in general, or over Josh Allen and a few other players, but Haskins, there wasn't much of a hankering for him from the fans.
right in light of the sorry ass state of the Giants.
A secondary in disarray despite significant draft capital devoted to it. Same with the offensive line. No WR on the roster that any defense really cares about; and same goes for TE. Oh, and did I mention we have jack shit for a pass rush.
I've read on this site about how Gettleman will be around next season. Yea, to clean out his office.
Hard to say. We do know Baker was horrible last season, who knows if the light would've gone on for him or not.
We've all seen guys who were straight-up bad, but there are also guys who thrived once they got into the right situation. I thought Haskins flashed last year but clearly is flatlining this season. Maybe he'll be better somewhere else — but nobody's going to give up much to see.
I know they all miss on players, but the vitriol the Giants had to swallow from some in the media after not picking Haskins was disgusting.
Fields looks like a stronger pro prospect, but right now he's not in my top 5.
You know, maybe you're right...passing on Haskins (and Darnold and Rosen) is a key highlight for our GM. As there have been so few.
Sometimes things are what they seem. NY didn't think enough of DH and felt that DJ was the better candidate. We dodged a bullet w/ DH. Hopefully DJ can flip the switch and make something happen this year.

Top 5 picks or top 5 QBs?
If they were smart they would
Well, a few of us weren't... ;)
NYJ and Wash.
No wonder Lawrence wants to go back to school.
Browns were there to but things have changed in Cleveland
The Chiefs were lucky to get Mahomes, is more like it. They went from a perennial division round loser, to Super Bowl Champions. All for adding the right QB.

to land in Kansas City, a team that went 13-3 with Alex Smith the year prior, instead of getting picked at the top of the draft where he would have had to claw his way out of the swamp with a crappy team and no pieces in place (like, say, Mayfield or Darnold).

I wouldn't categorize it as luck. They aggressively moved up in a trade with Buffalo - gave up draft capital - because they saw a potential game-breaking player.
I think you ave to admire the commitment and the willingness to go for it.
He's an issue and who knows how many really want him.
Guarantee you. If Jones and Haskins both hit FA, Jones is picked up in a heartbeat and Haskins waits.

be mindful of how Haskins looked surrounded by a near elite college talent level. He's got a lot of warts.
Fields looks like a stronger pro prospect, but right now he's not in my top 5.
Top 5 picks or top 5 QBs?
Picks. We're likely picking top 5 again and cannot afford to blow it.

Huh?
They traded up to get him. You think he fell into their laps or something?
Nah, bro.
Haskins has alienated not one, but two coaching staffs, and acted like a flake off the field. There's a big difference between "he's not who we would have chosen" and "we're not going to try to make the best of this, especially with our jobs on the line". Given what he's earning as a #15 pick vs. where he could have wound up, I'd say Haskins' luck has been alright. He's a qb, so he'll get more chances, flake or not.
All this whining that "they called us racist!" is soooo overblown.
Baker and Beal both sucked when they were on the field, so yeah, probably.
He was the one player in the 2019 draft I said I didn't want the Giants to draft.
I do think he could have fallen a lot further on draft day but for Snyder.
What a load of BS. There were some that liked him a lot but as usual you are grossly exaggerating the reaction here. IIRC there were a lot of people gushing about Parris Campbell.

This place was head over heels for him.

Yea, complete bullshit. People thought he threw a pretty nice ball, but most everybody was saying how concerned they were over his sweating profusely throughout. People also saw him get a lot of attention from Shurmur. He threw a nice ball in a shell....that was all that came from that.
More "I think I am so much more in touch with the NFL than anybody on this site" by Samba boy here.

And McLaurin. Who is doing some very good work for WFT.
Some people just don't learn...

I wanted both. I thought that Campbell was going to be a star and McLaurin was reportedly a stud special teamer so I thought he would be a perfect fit here because if he didn't work out as a WR at least the Giants had a good special teams player.
McLaurin was a great pick for Washington. A rare WR hit for WFT.
DG made the right pick
There is a lot of buzz around QB Trey Lance. It wouldn't surprise me if he goes higher than Justin Fields we all know what will happen if this comes to fruition.
Kyler Murray though?
DG made the right pick
People were torn between Murray, Haskins, Lock, and Jones.

called all the teams racist because Haskins was not the first QB taken in the draft

Stop using facts to support your argument.

NFW. He looked really out of sorts in NDSU's lone game versus Central Arkansas. And I don't think he's going to play their spring schedule...
Fields is playing lights out right now. He's changed his body, his stroke, and he's very sharp right out of the gate.
I think he's breathing down Lawrence's neck right now.

More than wanted him that’s for sure...

I agree the board was torn. But I don't think there was pound the table on anyone. I hated Jones. Initially I loved Haskins but after the Bowl Game was no longer enthused.
There was not overwhelming support for him.

Maybe - but I don't think so.
I liked Haskins a lot until about a week before the Draft when all the weird personal shit came out. And completely backed off him. Can't have that shit at QB. And it's playing out in front of our eyes.
