Sometimes the best move is one you don't make

For those that were clamoring for the Giants to sign Clowney in the off season, I saw this blurb in the Post on the story of Vic Beasley getting the ax.

Quote:
Jadeveon Clowney, the bigger of the Titans’ pass-rush signings on a one-year deal worth more than $12 million, has zero sacks through seven games.
granted sacks aren’t the end all be all
UConn4523 : 11/5/2020 7:40 am : link
he’s had such an underwhelming career and this season further proves it. I would have been fine signing him for the year but anything long term would have been terrible. We have a better defense than the Titans.
I recall seeing a week ago that the Titans
LBH15 : 11/5/2020 7:48 am : link
had the worst 3rd down defense (% of thirds downs allowed to be converted) in the entire NFL. And it was above 60% and much worse than even the 31st ranked team. Just awful.

Titans record: 5-2 and in first place in AFC South
Their defense is actually pretty bad
UConn4523 : 11/5/2020 7:51 am : link
they get to grind out games on offense yet they still let up 30 points four times this year including games to the the Jags, Vikings, Texans and Bengals.

Those 5 wins are almost 100% on Henry and Tannehill.
Well...
trueblueinpw : 11/5/2020 7:53 am : link
The Giants defense is a very pleasant surprise this year. I think if we had the same defense with a Clowney we’d have a few more wins. An outside rusher like him would give us a top NFL defense. I think. (Which obviously means nothing too much). Just saying.
Clowney reminds me a lot of
UConn4523 : 11/5/2020 7:59 am : link
later in his Giants career JPP. Very hot/cold, always able to make that big tackle but rarely gets home for the big sack. For $12m he isn’t a bad option but top DE money is just a big mistake. He’s certainly not changing anyone’s mind on that one.

I always viewed him more like Vernon. Excellent against the run, very good at getting pressures, but always half a step late for the sacks.

Pretty similar in those regards to LW too, though they play different positions.
Did anyone notice that Ryan Connelly has 1 tackle for the Vikings
JohnB : 11/5/2020 8:09 am : link
this year?

I thought that releasing him was a mistake. Maybe not.

And his replacement Downs had a stood out with a couple big plays the other day after a rough start earlier in the season.

Clowney would be a great role player on this defense
rasbutant : 11/5/2020 8:18 am : link
However, you don't pay role players the kind of money he was looking for. 12mil/yr for him though seems like a reasonable price, your not paying him for sacks similar to Williams.
Forgot to add Clowney

who has 10 pressures
We lost a good player in Lorenzo Carter who I believe would

have made more of a difference than Clowney. Carter was playing some good ball as evidenced by lessening of the all important BBI criticisms when playing

Thanks for posting this because I truly would have thought Williams had more(and I'm not a huge Williams fan). Disappointed that Dex only has 6 as this was a 'selling point' to the fans by DG. Maybe his presence has allowed Williams more?

He's a nose. More often not his role is going to be occupy blockers and stonewall, be a disruptor in the run game.

If he's not drawing the double teams, that means LW probably is, and not getting as many pressures as he has.

I understand and agree with that role. Its just that I thought I recall either Shurmur or DG saying DL would be able to pressure the QB as well. There are games and plays where I am really impressed by his play and then there are times when he's getting blown up or tossed aside and I'm really surprised considering his size.

Clowney has fooled me. I actually think he's been better as a run defender than a pass rusher.

The raw skills have always been there to be a player who creates constant chaos and disruption. I've seen a handful of games (even in the playoffs) where he looked LT-light. But those are too few and far between.

I believe he's also struggled staying healthy and focused. Body seems to be quasi-porcelain...

Clowney has been inconsistent and injury-prone. This is Year 7 for him, and I think at this point you can comfortably project him not being able to put those labels behind him.
he lost himself a fuck ton of money
UConn4523 : 11/5/2020 11:38 am : link
he's got to have a big 2nd half if he wants to make any of that back. He can have 10 sacks over the next 8 games and I still wouldn't be interested in a long term deal. I can't imagine Judge would want him here on big money either.
Crazy how quickly things can change in the NFL.
mittenedman : 11/5/2020 11:57 am : link
The Titans had the makings of a great D not too long ago. They had a stout DLine, 2 lightning fast ILBs and a good secondary. Defensive minded head coach with a strong running game.

Now, they suck.

Jurrell Casey is a big loss for them - he's the best DT in the league nobody talks about. But they also had depth behind him.

Gotta strike while the iron's hot.
Id argue the same thing about yannick ngakoue
Danny Dimes : 11/5/2020 12:58 pm : link
He was traded from vikings to baltimore last week and then vikings go on to beat the Packers and Baltimore gets beat by the Pits. Im pretty sure he wouldnt have made any improvement with Giants 1-7 shit show...most likely would of been worse
I've watched the Titans twice this year....
GMen72 : 11/5/2020 4:35 pm : link
Clowney isn't a game changer, but he's pretty disruptive. He's been a huge disappointment over his entire career, for sure.
I’m not a huge Clowney
MtDizzle : 11/5/2020 4:39 pm : link
guy but I’m in the business of adding good football players and he fits the bill. I’m not gonna kick him when he’s down and take a sample size stat to try and convince us that he’s about as effective as Eric Moore was for us in 2005. FOH!
Clowney
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 11/5/2020 4:42 pm : link
is excellent at setting the edge and run defense in general. But he's average as a pass rusher. It's hard to be an impact Edge Rusher/DLineman when you aren't getting to the QB. I don't like when people call him a lazy bust since lazy players don't work as hard at containing the run as he does, but he has definitely had a disappointing career as a pass rusher. He was supposed to be a Julius Peppers caliber player.
I was big on Clowney

Probably better this way...

“ From @gmfb Weekend: Jadeveon Clowney is dealing with meniscus issue in his knee, sources tell me. All options, including surgery, are on the table for the #Titans' edge rusher. He's questionable for tomorrow vs. the #Bears, as he's been trying to battle through the issue.”
