Peppers

adamg : 11/15/2020 5:22 pm
I missed the first half. But what I saw of the second half he looked amazing. Had a half sack on third down and then a 20 yard punt return on fourth. This coaching staff seems to be putting him good spots.

Did I miss anything major that would contradict this view?
he

is producing more than obj right now. I still remember giants fans melting down because they thought obj WAS the giants.
No. Peppers was very good and has been good pretty much all season
PatersonPlank : 11/15/2020 5:24 pm : link
He is a key part of the D and a leader out there
Judge and the coaching staff
US1 Giants : 11/15/2020 5:26 pm : link
are using him well. They put him in situations to succeed and hide his weaknesses.
No he lhas looked quite good the last
chopperhatch : 11/15/2020 5:26 pm : link
Few weeks. I think he will look even better when we get McKinney back as I think he will be used more closer to the LOS. We need another safety badly.
Remember what Judge

said early on - don't tell what a player cannot do, tell what he can do. Graham is using Peppers to the max where he can. Hats off to Graham.
He has his flaws but he’s clearly being used
UConn4523 : 11/15/2020 5:37 pm : link
to his strengths, something the last coaching staff didn’t have any idea how to do. He was all over the place today.
Graham is hiding his flaws

Don’t tell MookGiants this

This isn’t meant to be a call out to him whatsoever and I have nothing against Mook, but if it were up to him Peppers wouldn’t have made it to game 1.

Well Mook is an idiot so...

Yup, and having Logan Ryan eliminates the need for Peppers to worry about playing deep halves. Peppers is essentially playing nickel linebacker much of the time
He might have taken a punt return to the house too, if he didnt

Sounds like a great idea
MookGiants : 11/15/2020 6:22 pm : link
judge him on a couple of games and ignore that he's been a bad defensive player for the majority of his career.

He's not good. And he will never be good. He'll have a couple good games a year, and he'll suck the other 14.

No, he was used improperly. And he was never a bad football player, he just had no real position, which is a huge difference. He wasn't a 1st round pick because he was a bad football player. Like Collins, he is a tweener. Graham and Judge are thinking outside the box and using him where he is most effective.

Yes, it's been everyone elses fault for 4 years. Just like it was everyone elses fault at Michigan when he was no where near the impact player they thought he would be on defense.

Judge does a good job getting the most out of a lousy roster, that I will give you. But Peppers should not be part of the teams long term plans, because he's not good enough to be.

He does this every year where he plays a couple of really good games and flashes and everyone thinks see he's a good player and then he sucks shit.

There are many positives from this game, and Peppers did play a good game, but long term I have no interest in having him as a major part of this defense. They can hide him against bad teams.

I really dont know why people can't just accept that he's not very good. Why is it everyone elses fault that he isn't good?
I think he's a damn good player, and the coaching staff seems to
PatersonPlank : 11/15/2020 6:35 pm : link
think so too. He was also good at Cleveland too, not to mention a high draft pick from UM. I'll trust the coaching staff's opinion of Peppers.
how do you know
MookGiants : 11/15/2020 6:38 pm : link
what the coaching staff thinks of him?

He was being pulled off the field on passing downs at times this year and he was less than pleased about it.

The Giants have zero depth back there and he was still coming off the field.

He's similar to Engram. Talented but just not very good.

You can be obstinate - he was a 1st round pick because he sucked at Michigan? ok. And yes, if the coaches did not utilize him correctly then it is on them. Is he a true safety? Is he a linebacker? Is he a DE? While we can agree he was not much of anything special as any of the above singlely, but it sure seems if you play him as a rover, an unaccounted for defender he plays extremely well. Funny how his coverage has improved recently. He has a lot of athletic ability, now Graham is taking advantage of it.
I think he’s getting better as a SS
Simms11 : 11/15/2020 6:42 pm : link
and Graham is using him to his strengths which is closer to LoS.

Are you referring to when the coaching staff was obviously taking it easy on him and almost giving him a snap count when coming back from injury? Cause that’s what it seemed to me, being cautious with the injury.
The day some admit when their wrong...
UConn4523 : 11/15/2020 6:56 pm : link
not for nothing but you talked about peppers like he didn’t even belong in the NFL. He’s playing well this year, clearly a starting caliber SS.

He has flaws and out coaches are better than the previous bunch, what’s so hard to see here? How many other players are playing well, written off as JAGs?

When McKinney comes back, I’ll bet he plays alongside Ryan ... and Peppers will be a ‘rover’ ... Peppers is a very good blitzer and will give offenses fits trying to figure out what he’s going to do.
Don’t forget Peppers has also been really solid as a PR for us.
Britt in VA : 11/15/2020 6:57 pm : link
That’s something we’ve struggled with since Harris left.
In general, I think Graham has done a very good job
Matt M. : 11/15/2020 7:00 pm : link
of getting guys into situations that best suit them. Peppers is not great at SS, but he is having a much better season this year than last because their schemes are better.
He has his strengths and flaws. He's an average to above average ss.
Ira : 11/15/2020 7:02 pm : link
He's also a good punt returner.
It's very nice to have a consistent and good PR back there.
Matt M. : 11/15/2020 7:11 pm : link
Haven't had that in a while. He is making a difference at PR.
He has elite athleticism
Giantimistic : 11/15/2020 7:12 pm : link
And the ability to make impact plays. He has found the perfect coaching staff to maximize his strengths and hide his weaknesses. I think he is a good player and this staff is making him look even better. I think he will want big money that we should not pay.

He has been a key player on this defense though and happy with his punt returns. I think he is a player that we aim to get high comp pick for. If he was willing to sign for a reasonable amount I would keep him but he will want more than Collins I would think.
Peppers was a running back in high school...
EricJ : 11/15/2020 7:22 pm : link
and played defense as well. He is an all around good football player with skills that coaches may choose to utilize.

The QB of my high school team was an elite athlete. He would just take the snap and run up the middle 80 yards for a TD. Nobody could touch him. We were on cable TV every week so Bergen County could watch him play.

He goes to Illinois and some idiot decides to turn him into a cornerback. They also never used his offensive skills... ever. This kid was like Lamar Jackson decades ago but the NCAA was just not ready for that.

He plays as a backup DB for Miami and Washington for a couple of years before his career ended.

This guy was never used appropriately once he left high school.

This is going back many years, but the QB on my HS team was like that. We ran an option offense and he kept it plenty. He also returned punts and played S. He got interest from some decent, but not great programs, like Syracuse (when they were good), Temple, Penn St. (when they were good, not great) and one or two others. But all DI programs. The problem is they all wanted him to play S. He wanted to play QB. I think he even turned down interest in RB. Long story slightly shorter, he went to a DII school and was never heard from again.

Rich Gannon was a QB at the U of D who relied a lot on his legs. Some NFL teams wanted to turn him into a utility running back. He held firm and insisted on playing QB. Turned out well for him.
