? about the penalty we accepted at 10 yard line right

Essex : 11/15/2020 7:04 pm
before the Jones TD that was called back.
Situation was first and 10 at the 19. We get 9 yards to the 10. They get an illegal hands to the face penalty. We take the penalty instead of declining. Is a first down and 5 from the 14 really better than 2 and 1 from the 10? I mean if we would then have probably six or seven plays to get the ball in from the 10 yard line. I don’t know if I am right or not but at the time I thought we should decline.

We actually ended up scoring on the next play (but it was called back on that Thomas penalty). I would rather not argue about whether it was a mistake because of the next penalty. In other words, just really interested in what is the correct decision at the time of the penalty.
I was thinking you take the downs

In that situation.
That was an interesting one

I guess downs are valuable.

I agree in almost 99% of the cases take the extra dowk, but a second and one from the ten in probably four down territory as long as you don’t go back, probably means you get 6 or 7 plays to score from the ten. Plus the first down marker now is at the four. I really don’t know what the right answer is but my gut during the game was to decline
I can see the argument either way.

One thing I am confident of is Judge had a reason for making the call he did.
I think one thing to consider

there is that 1st and 5 means you can get a first down before a TD? I mean, not only is the first down not assured on 2nd and 1 (penalties, sacks), but it opens up more of the playbook. Not to mention you have more room if you are throwing to ther end zone.
I was good with second and

one there.
I thought that was dumb.

2nd and one at the 9. Why back yourself up 6 yards to get a first down. Eagles were not stopping them there. Then they have a 1st on the 7 or 6 yard line....
I was surprised they took the penalty

I like the second and one a few yards close to the end zone. Plus whoever said first and five, no it would have been first and ten, automatic first down.

Btw, my bad. You are absolutely right about the first and ten.
I questioned another call

Eagles called for holding deep in their own end. Half the distance to the goal. We either put them in 3rd and 8 or 2nd and 11. We chose 2nd and 11. I would have went with 3rd and 8.
I remember that as well

I thought it was a mistake as well. One shot to get them off the field (although I thought the difference was more than three yards there).
I felt like with the way our running game has become

money converting in short yardage, you decline the penalty and take 2nd and 1

But can’t kill Judge for that one, kinda 50-50 IMO. And I have no doubt it’s a scenario he’s studied and had reasoning behind his decision
