before the Jones TD that was called back.
Situation was first and 10 at the 19. We get 9 yards to the 10. They get an illegal hands to the face penalty. We take the penalty instead of declining. Is a first down and 5 from the 14 really better than 2 and 1 from the 10? I mean if we would then have probably six or seven plays to get the ball in from the 10 yard line. I don’t know if I am right or not but at the time I thought we should decline.
We actually ended up scoring on the next play (but it was called back on that Thomas penalty). I would rather not argue about whether it was a mistake because of the next penalty. In other words, just really interested in what is the correct decision at the time of the penalty.
I agree in almost 99% of the cases take the extra dowk, but a second and one from the ten in probably four down territory as long as you don’t go back, probably means you get 6 or 7 plays to score from the ten. Plus the first down marker now is at the four. I really don’t know what the right answer is but my gut during the game was to decline
Btw, my bad. You are absolutely right about the first and ten.
But can’t kill Judge for that one, kinda 50-50 IMO. And I have no doubt it’s a scenario he’s studied and had reasoning behind his decision
