are the Giants a WR, CB, and EDGE away?

CMicks3110 : 11/15/2020 10:11 pm
from being a pretty elite team?

I know we still have this year, and I firmly think we can go on a run and win the division.

But I doubt we're a super bowl team yet.

But it seems like we have a lot in place. We have a developing QB, developing O-Line, a really good DL, good complimentary WRs, a strong MLB, an elite corner #1, and our safety position is pretty covered. We also have an elite Kicker/Punter combo.

The only position that is sort of up in the air (meaning it can go either way is TE and Engram) not sure what we'll have there moving forward, but coaching staff seems to believe in him.

We also have a really good coaching staff and a lot of cap room beginning in 2022.

Next year we'll get Barkley back, and Zo Carter (who was also coming on)

So it seems like we're on the precipice of something good here.

With that said, if you agree, who do you want (in college and free agency) at those positions?

day at a time. They beat a bad Eagles team at home. They're still 3-7.
For now I’m confident that we have the coaching

In place. Anything beyond that is a question mark.
Er , edge and another solid cb
Payasdaddy : 11/15/2020 10:20 pm : link
And our talent base is good enough to really compete in every game
It’s all on jones improving last 6 games and taking it into 2021
With hopefully some continuity and saquon rounding into form mid yr
Would be enough talent if we are well coached
And by early returns, besides 49ers game. Looks like we may have found a long term answer there too
Meant wr, maybe two

I don’t know about elite, but they are getting way better. The improvement from the coaching staff is visible. Hopefully they realize that you need a deep coaching staff going forward.

Edge, WR, CB are clearly biggest needs. OL looks to finally be on its way and it’s weird seeing LBs that can run and tackle. That said, I’d prob look to add there as well.
Glad to see

QB is being taken off many draft need boards around here.

If Pettis can play up to his potential and Mack can show us more grit, maybe even WR gets downgraded a bit.

Here are my top 3:

1. CB
2. Edge
3. WR. (Hoping Pettis and Tate make me change this)
You're assuming the developmental pieces continue to develop
AcesUp : 11/15/2020 10:36 pm : link
That's not a guarantee. Probably not a likelihood. Let's hope that the OL continues to progress and Jones can build on the last 2 games. I'll take that before counting my chickens.
Maybe but only if Barkley returns to form
BillT : 11/15/2020 10:41 pm : link
They are also short a good two way TE.

Tate is probably going to be off the team one minute after the final game of 2020 ends
I'm interested in seeing what some of the practice squad WRs can do
Adding above average NFL starters
Metnut : 11/15/2020 10:52 pm : link
at those positions and the Giants would be at least have an average nfl roster talent wise. Maybe better if the OL and Jones really develop in the second half.

With good coaching, you can win 10 games with a roster like that.

The good thing about losing Tate is we can move Shepherd back to the slot where he really excels. Then we have Slayton, Pettis, and Tate....and this top WR draft choice we may pick up next year.

Cmon man.

It's a good win, they beat a team they haven't beaten in four years. They handled a team that typically owns them. But, there's a long way to go before they're a contender. Even they win 6 games and the division, there's a long way to go to get the talent level and experience level up to contender.

Howabout not hang on to every game every week and try to enjoy the progress.

I hope we are. We used a top 5 draft pick for that position. I think everyone agrees he is now starting to play better. Again, I must remind you....he had practically no preseason.

Lol, ooops, I meant Mack. Both names with 4 letters.
Unless things fall apart over the next six games
JonC : 11/15/2020 11:21 pm : link
I think you can bet on Jones and Thomas being in there next season, and the top 5 pick gets spent on defense, imo.

Whether or not they are the future remains to be seen, but don't see the brass moving on from either.
They played well and won two games in a row
Mike from Ohio : 11/15/2020 11:24 pm : link
That is really nice progress. But the question in the OP is just silly. Is this team three players away from being elite? Of course not. This team is many, many players away from being elite.

Let’s beat a team that isn’t in the worst division in the league before we start throwing “elite” around.
There's also the likelihood
JonC : 11/15/2020 11:26 pm : link
that some players wash out, get injured, retire unexpectedly over the next 2-3 seasons, and you have to factor in replacing them as well. Roster building, much like player development, is often not linear.
Giants may pick 10th in the 2021 draft

1. Jets
2. Jax
3. Wash
4. Dallas
5. Houston

8. Denver
9. Carolina or Atlanta

Need a STARTING WR, CB and Edge plus
Ivan15 : 11/15/2020 11:45 pm : link
a bunch of Quality backups everywhere. Championship teams need good depth so that losing someone like Barkley doesn’t hurt so much.
Fun day, great win....
Skittlebish : 11/15/2020 11:50 pm : link
But this team is still one of the worst in the league. We are a long way from average, elite is just plain laughable.
need to see consistent play
Sneakers O'toole : 11/16/2020 12:09 am : link
if they start stringing together some wins we can talk. O-line has been showing some signs of life the past few weeks. Not perfect by any stretch, but signs none the less. Having an actual running game has helped tremendously, as has the lack of turnovers going against us. Baby steps perhaps, but progress.
Our defensive front has been playing
Sneakers O'toole : 11/16/2020 12:11 am : link
some terrific ball the past few weeks, add an edge rusher to that and we got something special that you can build around

Completely agree. I’m super pumped after today. There’s a lot to be excited/encouraged about. But let’s keep seeing improvement. Need to beat a frisky Joe Burrow led Bengals team after the bye. This team is not good enough to look too far ahead.
I don't

ever want to hear CB again.

Sick of wasting resources on the position
Depends on the WR, CR and Edge......
George from PA : 11/16/2020 3:02 am : link
Also, Zo Carter Achilles is not an injury that give confidence of a full return.

I hope we do not lose anyone across DL.

We still have several players that should not be on the field...so better back-ups are needed, as well.

Hopeful, yes.....but the climb must continue
Don't forget TE
Giant4Life : 11/16/2020 4:25 am : link
Engram is a big slot receiver. He can't block a lick. A 2-way TE is desperately needed.
I think elite is a strong word
mattlawson : 11/16/2020 6:55 am : link
An imposing WR, a typical TE, another corner, another LB, a pass rusher. But yeah

Of course, there needs to be upgrades at some backup positions, but if you can get a starter, some of the current starters become good backups...
What i'm seeing is a a BIG difference
Snacks : 11/16/2020 7:29 am : link
in the coaching. That's half the battle right there. Getting the right staff. Compared to last few years it's night and day to my eyes.

Now we need to upgrade the talent and away we go.

But boy, what a sigh of relief for me as a fan to have the feeling like we have the makings of a good to great coaching staff. Keep em' together if possible.

What i'm looking for is evidence the staff can develop the talent. We haven't been able to do that in a long while in my opinion. Players get here and they don't get any better. Lets see if this staff can do that. So far so good.

Agree with all that. And Zo Carter may not completely come back so another Edge/LB may be needed there. I hate achilles injuries more than knee injuries.
Here is the shopping list to get to Elite
LBH15 : 11/16/2020 8:25 am : link
- Two Edge Rushers
- Another Inside LB
- Another outside Cornerback
- A Free Safety adept at deep cover (McKinney probably isn't that guy)
- Upgrade at Guard
- Upgrade at Right Tackle (or if Peart develops)
- Two Wide Receivers
- Three-down Tight End

What am i missing?
We have two DT's that are FA
rasbutant : 11/16/2020 8:28 am : link

Edge, WR and CB for certain
chick310 : 11/16/2020 8:53 am : link
are areas that need attention. That alone would be a successful offseason if they were able to address these in free agency and draft.
I don't see it like that, ie players away
Jim in Forest Hills : 11/16/2020 8:55 am : link
although I acknowledge needs at certain positions.

I just want the Giants to form an identity with dominant traits with a high level of execution. That will make the sum greater than the parts.

Right now they are trending to a power run team and I have to say I love that. If the OL becomes the dominant trait, oh my goodness they will be fun to watch.

I doubt they get rid of Tate, 7 mill dead money and only save 2.2mill. You are not ganna find a better receiver for 2.2mill. Hopefully they can find a trade with the Jets for a 7th round pick or something
they’re an offseason away
mittenedman : 11/16/2020 10:16 am : link
from being a major problem for the NFL. Seems like people in the game can see them coming, too.

One of the many great things about the OL appearing to be set is it finally opens up the 1st round pick to be used elsewhere. It started with the forced Pugh pick, Flowers even AT at #4. in all cases we likely felt obligated to use premium resources on OL. and rightfully so.

Now we can go back to what the team did in Coughlins hey day, simply adding great football players in round 1 regardless of position.
I'd prefer an elite offensive lineman.
giantBCP : 11/16/2020 12:05 pm : link
I feel like with the way the team plays, and the way that the coaches value the players, a top tier offensive lineman would bring more to the offense than another WR.
