Jalen Hurts - Does he had anything?

SLIM_ : 11/16/2020 6:49 am
A couple of people posted on other threads but I thought it was worth it's own. I haven't seen much of the Eagles with the exception of the 2 Giant games but to me it looks like Doug Pederson is getting too cute playing him.

Wentz is a good runner and a very good thrower on the run. It isn't like Hurts is subbing in for someone like Eli and is adding a different dimension. My thoughts are whatever incremental athleticism he provides is negated by having Wentz play wide receiver.

I don't think Hurts is gaining valuable playing time and the Eagles cap-wise seem to be locked into Wentz until 2022.

Am I missing something?
They should try a trick play with Hurts

like he drops back and just throws a pass. That might fool everybody.

Haha

I honestly think it looked like Hurts doesn’t add anything bc Graham had us prepared for them to use him. If memory serves Miles Sanders had one good run off a read option with Hurts, otherwise we stuffed him

The Eagles have been relying on trickery and douchebaggery to win games since Chip Kelly was there. This is how they do things.

I still cannot believe they got a Super Bowl out of it. But Pederson can't help himself.

Wentz came out of the half red hot. On second and 10, Pederson inserted Hurts in and he ran for no gain.

3rd and long failed, punted away.

Eagles really lost their momentum there
I feel like when Hurts goes to the gun

and they put Wentz out at WR, its like the Eagles are playing with 10 guys on offense. They're never going to throw it to Wentz so whats the point? Take Wentz off the field if you want Hurts to run a play

So I don’t care about their problems. Just that they have them.
They need to deploy

real plays for Hurts. I thought that pick could be a steal for them but Pederson seems hellbent on making it work with Wentz despite him turning it over more than Jones this year.

I'm sorry, but uptempo football, RPOs, etc. are not "trickery" and "douchebaggery" - we have been using some of those same concepts ourselves for a while now.
I wouldn’t call it that either

but bringing Hurts in for a few plays a game that aren’t your typical offensive plays make it a bit gimmicky. The same could be said for the first year of Taysom Hill in NO - some of the plays seemed so forced and many didn’t work.

Fandom aside I’d like to see Hurts run a full series and see how it looks. The football fan in me is intrigued by his skill set and I’ve seen enough of Wentz.

I didn't say it was. I meant Pederson is in love with trick plays and trying to show how smart he is. So he can't help himself but put in Hurts, even if things are going well.
Hurts was a terrible pick for round 2

He doesn't have an NFL arm, which is sort of a requirement to play the QB position
Do they ever let him throw the ball
LBH15 : 11/16/2020 8:27 am : link
when he comes in?
Pederson using Hurts

Reminds me of Fassel using Ron Dayne. As soon as he came in you knew it was going to be an option run. It was not even an RPO as Hurts really has not been a threat to throw the ball. Definitely killed the momentum of the Eagles who should have run Sanders and Scott all day because we have struggled all year with the quick slashing running game (we shut down power guys like Peyton Barber, James Conner, etc. but struggled with the shiftier guys like Benny Snell, Antonio Gibson, J.D. McKissic).
cjac nails it

The problem is they've been pretty 1-dimensional with Hurts. He's played ~30 snaps on offense and only thrown it twice (~7%) and those 2 passes resulted in 18 and 9 yard receptions respectively, so not exactly big plays to worry the D.

I also don't get keeping Wentz on the field as a WR decoy. Obviously teams are just going to cover him 1v1.

Taysum Hill doesn't really throw it much either (5 attempts + 1 sack in ~150 snaps), but at least he's averaging 17.5 y/a when he does, which keeps the safeties honest. And, at least this year, they've been pulling Brees when Hill goes under C so at least they aren't playing 10v11.

exactly. Hill's first year I had no idea why Peyton kept Brees in there at WR.

Unless Wentz gets pulled and they give Hurts a chance to run the offense, its going to feel like a gimmick.
