How did Blake Martinez play against the Eagles?

M.S. : 11/17/2020 6:53 am

Interested in any viewpoints out there.

Watched a few re-runs and it "looks like" he was nullified on several Eagles' running plays.

Not sure.

ps
Great win! And if you want to have a laugh, go to the Eagles web site and watch the Head Coach press conference after the game. Everyone sounded stunned as if the Eagles have a natural right to win every game against the Giants! I don't believe the word "Giants" was mentioned even once. It was 100% about what the Eagles did wrong even though they were outplayed in all phases of the game.
No professional observation but

I did notice Blake hitting the wrong hole several times.

Eagles OL did a nice job pulling and trapping.
The eagles
BigBlueJ : 11/17/2020 7:14 am : link
went out of their way to scheme away from him. He killed them last time.
Mayo and Downs

Are pitiful.
It was the old Perry Fewell IND gameplan
mittenedman : 11/17/2020 7:17 am : link
The Giants had 2 down linemen on the field most of the game and the Eagles could run the ball whenever they wanted. This time, Peyton Manning wasn't on the field to keep calling runs.
They better get use to it....

The Law of Probability suggests that the Pendulum is going to swing the other way.
Teams will scheme to
section125 : 11/17/2020 7:48 am : link
eliminate players that cause the most problems for them. Question is whether the opposing team is able to cope. Apparently, the Giants were able to defeat the scheme and thus defeat the Eagles.
I'm sure JJ and Martinez will gladly give up 5 or 6 Martinez tackles per game if the rest of the defense picks up the slack and they end up winning.
as good as Martinez is
Giantsfan79 : 11/17/2020 8:04 am : link
he's not great shedding blockers once they've locked onto him. the Eagles got him on a few runs.

They had 2 DL for a lot of passing plays (end of game, long third downs), but most of the game they played with 3 DL:

Williams - 70% of snaps
Lawrence - 57%
Tomlinson - 54%
---------------------- those 3 were out there *most* of the game
Austin Johsnon - 25%
BJ Hill - 27%

And profootballreference has Sheard listed at DE and playing 28% (I think he's played mostly OLB with the Giants).

Now, they often had 5 DBs out there instead of 4 LBs, but they still played most downs with 3 DL.
Not a good game by any of the Giants LBs
LBH15 : 11/17/2020 8:23 am : link
although they were dropping back into coverage a good bit too.

Good thing Eagles didn't stick to a ground attack because their OL was doing an good job of getting the vaunted Giant DL moved out and hands on our LBs. Not sure Giants ever really stopped them from running effectively.

To Martinez's defense, Downs and Mayo are really bad. And you need the interior guys to work in concert with one another when you have slashing-type running attacks like Eagles. Those two are big problems on this Defense right now.
I’ll take Blake on 5

Martinez is an ILB - one of two. Whatever the Eagles did, they did it. Whether it was a change to blocking responsibility or adding a player to go after him; run toward Mayo or Downs, or run at Martinez knowing that Mayo and Downs are easily handled.....

Despite the number of snaps played, the Giants played a significant amount of 2 DL and the Eagles made them pay for it at times

I recall some plays where Martinez committed to a gap or hole and got blocked up or the RB bounced past that area. In those cases you need the other ILB to do his job, but both Mayo or or Downs weren't in the picture quick enough.
Martinez is a good player
arniefez : 11/17/2020 9:44 am : link
ideally the guy next to him on both sides would as good if not better. That's not the case right now. Right now he's the only legit starting LB on the field. The run defense was about the only disappointing part of the game Sunday. Lawrence was a non factor and Williams was blocked really well on more plays than usual. The defense needs more talent especially at LB.

There is still a MIKE LB among the 2 ILBs. You cannot scheme to stay away from the MLB. You can attack them but there is no way to avoid them.
I thought someone said

that Doug Peterson gave Patrick Graham credit for having a good game plan?

We did, but big advantage we had playing with lead all game. Teams are going to take that Eagles tape to watch how to attack us in run game. In tighter game we may need to play more man exposing Yiadom.
Well he does enough right

Tell me how you scheme away from the MLB. I'm genuinely curious.
