Good read on Joe Judge and the state of the Giants,

BelieveJJ : 11/17/2020 7:36 am
from Politi at NJ.com.

Nothing substantive, but an interesting (and IMO accurate) perspective on the recent and current state of the team.

It happens all the time: A team gets off to an awful start, and in the desperate quest to change its trajectory, the head coach goes a little bonkers... more often than not? That bad team just stays bad.

Judge held the Giants together... - ( New Window )
Good read

Good article.

Glad team focus isn't on the standings. But we all know there is one thing worse than winning the worst division in the NFL's 100-year history.

Judge definitely deserves credit for keeping the team together

and having them prepared and fighting hard each week. Not an easy thing for a first time head coach who got off to an 0-5 start.

And you gotta admire how he handled the Tate thing, too.
There's an old saying in the NFL
arniefez : 11/17/2020 8:52 am : link
you can't fool the players. They know if they're playing for a HC that knows what he's doing and that they can trust to give them the best chance to win. The roster still needs several impact players before things really get good but clearly this HC is on the right track for long term success.

What's that, not winning it?

There's a lot of people scoffing at winning the division and how it isn't an accomplishment due to how bad it is. I say fuck that - go win it. Puts us in the drivers seat for 2021+ and way ahead of schedule of where most people thought we'd be.

Not going to complain about getting in with 6 or 7 wins - that would mean we get hot and then what can happen?
Yep, that's it. And agree, not sure why anybody should scoff

at winning a bad division. Nothing wrong with this team "walking before it can run" type of thing.

Games that matter in December and maybe January...we all should be giddy.

I got ridiculed saying we’d essentially be a pick em if we won the east depending on injuries. We’d have a home playoff game, finished the season strong, and the last two teams in this spot won their games. People can’t see things unless it’s five feet in front of their face.
He’s going to be around for a long time, imv.
Big Blue '56 : 11/17/2020 9:08 am : link
And that’s gonna be a good thing.
Is the playoff format the same for 2020 season?
LBH15 : 11/17/2020 9:10 am : link
I thought they made changes but really didn't pay attention when they went into effect.

As an example, do all division winners still get a home playoff game?

In 2007 we got in as a wild card and were not considered to be a very good team.

In 2000, they called us the worst team to have ever made it to the Superbowl.

In the NFC, we can probably upset virtually any team if we play a perfect game. Our defense would have difficulty with the Packers and the Seahawks.

A bad 7-9 team, Seattle, won their division and was the home team in the WC round against the defending SB champion Saints who were 12-4 iirc, but didn’t win their division, so they became the road team. Seattle beat them. Real fans don’t care how you got there as long as you do. imo

I recall that game. Wasn't it when M. Lynch went into "beast-mode" on one of the sickest runs in NFL history?

Yup. He was unstoppable..Something like 160-180 yards rushing I think.

Apparently they may expand it if COVID causes them to have to add more weeks to the schedule. Nothing definitive yet.

The 2007 Giants were 10-6, the 2000 Giants were 12-4. Other than that, totally the same thing.

Isn’t the plan to add another wild card team in each conference, and only the #1 seed gets a first round bye? Read that somewhere, but not sure if set in stone yet
yes, that's correct
UConn4523 : 11/17/2020 9:26 am : link
the above still stands though, they may expand it more if they have to cut the regular season short.
#1 seed in each conference
UConn4523 : 11/17/2020 9:27 am : link
gets a 1st round bye. Then #2 plays #7, #3 vs. #6, and #4 vs. #5.

I never understood 2 teams getting the first round BYE so I kinda like this anyway.

Yeah I remember that. The consensus was something like that we were the worst 12-4 team ever to win homefield throughout. Or something like that.
Maybe they said that going into the 2000 playoffs
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/17/2020 10:43 am : link
But that wasn't the story once they destroyed Minnesota.
losing to Cincy
ryanmkeane : 11/17/2020 10:52 am : link
would really put a damper on the division hopes. Following that game with Seattle across the country is going to be tough. Simply have to beat Cincy to keep the division title hopes alive.

So they did enact changes for this year then, adding another playoff team.

Is the worst division winner automatically the #4 seed and still granted a home game, or is it possible a Wild Card team with a better record gets a higher seed?

lol I don't know what you want me to tell you. It absolutely was discussed ad nauseum back then, especially when we were heading into the Vikings game. People were picking us to get annihilated.

In wellington's own words:

Quote:
"Bear in mind this is the Giant team that was referred to as the worst team ever to win home-field advantage in the National Football League playoffs," Mara said in postgame comments on the field. "And today, on this field of painted mud, we proved that we're the worst team ever to win the National Football Conference championship. I'm happy to say that in two weeks we're going to try to become the worst team ever to win the Super Bowl."
