BREAKING: Cubs announced that Theo Epstein will be stepping down from his role as president of baseball operations, beginning Friday. GM Jed Hoyer will move into that role as part of the transition.
Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and Epstein are set to meet with media later today.
Adding the Mets to the list would get him his own Cooperstown wing.
, Contreras and Hendriks prime trade targets for @Mets

I thought he wore that to escape the Fenway press, no?

In a letter he addressed to “Cubs Friends,” Epstein indicated he wants to take this summer off with family and workig for non-profits, adding, "I do plan on having a third chapter leading a baseball organization someday, though I do not expect it to be next year."

Besides him saying he’s taking the year off, Theo is under contract to the Cubs for 2021
If he resigns, that doesn’t negate that. He’d have to be fired to be available without the Cubs permission

According to league sources the Phildelphia Phillies will come after Theo Epstein aggressively regardless of his desire to take a year off.
I think you are confusing a couple things with Theo.
1. He resigned from the Red Sox GM job in 2005 - for financial reasons. He may have said he wanted to work for a non-profit at the time, but it was financially motivated. The Red Sox low-balled him. He resigned on halloween night (and left in the gorilla suit - as referenced above). He was re-hired 3 months later as GM and EVP.
2. In 2011, Theo resigned from the Red Sox to become President of the Cubs. There was no false pretense in this transaction and the Cubs compensated the Red Sox for this because Theo had a year left on his deal.
The Cubs sent Chris Carpenter to the Red Sox (I believe) as compensation.

when he left Boston. He didn't. I wouldn't be surprised to see him working next year.

Chris Carpenter retired as a Cardinal.

You are correct. I was referring to an interview just after he left in a gorilla suit, prior to being re-hired. I still think "I want to work for a non-profit" is his go-to line. It won't happen.
he thinks it's time to move on.
He fell one year short with the Cubbies.
He says he is going to take a year off, he probably will.
