Any potential future franchise QBs riding the pine?

RC in MD : 11/17/2020 4:16 pm
With a great discussion on the positive performance of Daniel Jones going on in another threat, I wanted to see if anyone can identify any under the radar backup QBs in the NFL that may be potential franchise QBs of the future? Something gold standards would be Tony Romo, Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, etc., who were backups but showed something special either coming out of college, during training camp/preseason, or on spot duty during previous seasons? And when given the chance to show it, they became franchise QBs.

Of course, conversely, who are potential fool's gold future franchise QBs in the mold of Matt Flynn, who may have looked like a potential franchise QB but failed to become one when given the chance.

I know that this is extremely subjective and speculative, but many posters on BBI have followed QBs from colleges as well as paid attention to some during offseasons/preseasons to possibly be excited about some young QB, whether rookie or young veteran.

I'll throw out Taysom Hill as a guy people appear to be excited about due to his versatility (which appears to be the flavor today), but I'm not sure that he's a franchise QB since I haven't seen him throw a lot.
I don't think the Saints even believe in Hill as a QB. If they like

him so much why did they put Winston in when Brees went down?
Will be interesting to see PJ Walker in Carolina

Probably making his first NFL start this week. Dual threat and XFL standout.
Hill is a weapon on offense

But he isn’t a full time QB or even a good backup QB. The fact that the Saints traded for Bridgewater last year and added Winston this year speaks volumes about how they view Hill at QB.
Jalen Hurts...

is a guy who I see potential. Maybe a starter, but not a 'franchise QB'. Definitely needs some polish and a system that compliments his ability to improvise. The guy is a winner and is getting lost in the shuffle in Philadelphia.
There is a reason you haven't seen Taysom Hill
Section331 : 11/17/2020 4:36 pm : link
throw a lot, the Saints clearly don't trust him to.

The obvious choice would be Jordan Love on GB, the Packers traded up to get him. But if you're looking for an under the radar type, Jacob Eason on Indy could be an interesting guy to keep an eye on.
Colt McCoy

We'll part ways with him after the 2021 season, he'll sign a big deal to be the next QB in Chicago in 2021 and we'll get a 3rd round comp pick in 2022.

Then I woke up from my dream.

:-)

thought AJ McCarron was a good QB. Kinda in the Matt Schaub mold. He performed well when dalton went out a few years ago. Don't know why he never got a fair shake.

Also I could see Mariotta doing to Carr what Tannehill did to him in Tennessee.
Trace McSorley

Dont get me wrong, I wouldn't bet money on it. But it wouldnt shock me. He always jumped out in college as having that *it* factor. He was a gamer, great leader, has all the intangibles. Coming out he obviously needed a lot of refinement. But I thought that after a few years and probably 2 or 3 teams he might find his way onto the field.
Ok...so obviously I don't think that Taysom Hill is a future
RC in MD : 11/17/2020 4:46 pm : link
franchise QB. And I'm sure people rave about him because he's that exciting utility player.

Can Jalen Hurts have success like Lamar Jackson with the right system? Having said that, I don't think Jackson is good enough passer to become a true franchise QB long term.

Dude was a winner for sure. I'm on board with that pic jrud
Hill is also old

He's not a franchise QB. The only one that comes to mind is Jordan Love just because of where he was drafted not because I think he's good.

Yeah...Hill was a bad example. But I would exclude Love in this category since he was actually drafted to be Rodgers's heir. He's not really under the radar, and if he doesn't turn into a franchise QB, I would say that he's a bust as a 1st round draft pick.
Rosen?

Hard to judge him from the two lousy situations he was in. Wonder what he could do on a decent team?
Nick Mullens seems to get a lot love

from some on BBI.

One model for this is Brett Favre,
81_Great_Dane : 11/17/2020 5:18 pm : link
who was on the bench in Atlanta, then traded to Green Bay to become a HOFer.

Kurt Warner, Tony Romo and Tom Brady were both pretty much ignored until they got on the field. Nobody really thought they were hot prospects. There are a lot more guys like Matt Flynn than those three guys.

I'm not aware of any developmental prospects who seem likely to break out. Maybe one of the backups in San Francisco — and both those guys have been seen a lot, neither is under the radar.

Taysom Hill...

Looks like a right handed Tebow. But I think he throws a decent ball. I get the sense, however, Payton doesn't trust him to go through multiple reads. So that's why he never got the baton last year when Brees went down. And with Brees down again, it looks like he's getting passed over for Winston.

I always liked Ryan Finley. Filled in for Dalton last year but struggled in his handful of starts. Could see him one day getting one more crack at it...

The problem here is that the NFL is loaded with quality QBs. Maybe the most at one time in NFL history...?

Really? You actually thought he was ever a top ten pick?

I like Josh Dobbs in Pittsburgh. I know he's not the primary backup(Rudolph is) but he was a dual threat QB coming out of Tennessee who made a number of plays in his time with the Vols. Smart as heck too. He majored in aerospace engineering w/ a 4.0 gpa. Jacksonville traded a 5th rounder for him back in 2019 after Foles got injured but ended up waiving him the next season, only to be claimed by Pitt again.
‘bw’, no, but there were plenty of others

Yeah....I'll raise my Hand. I thought Fromm would play. It's not exactly a black mark to be wrong on a QB...most who are picked can't play in the NFL. Pitching to MLB Hitters....Hitting MLB Pitchers...Playing QB at the NFL Level is the Hardest and most unpredictable "Graduation" in all of Sports.

As a freshman he was considered a Heisman candidate, but each year and each time he got to "playoff" games he came up small. By the end of his sophomore year he was not really a 1st rounder anymore - despite decent numbers.

How improbable Kurt Warner's story was. Makes you wonder how many more like him are/were out there and get missed.

I did and many experts had him as a potential top 5 picks two years ago. I remember his game against Alabama in 2018 where he was outstanding and nearly pulled off the upset.
Winston
HomerJones45 : 11/18/2020 10:48 am : link
qb's who throw for 5000 yards and 33 td's don't grow on trees. At age 26, he could play another 10-12 years in the League, and I think he is in the right spot in NO with that coaching staff and Brees to harness the obvious athletic talent.

Got it. I never saw top of the draft ability. Project with upside? Sure. But I didn't like the arm ability and overall size. Seemed a 4th-5th rounder type to me.

Very good leader, though. One of those players who likely hit his ceiling in college...
As others have said, Winston and Love are possibilities.
Big Blue Blogger : 11/18/2020 12:10 pm : link
Winston for what he has already shown, despite the obvious warts.

Love for what he might eventually do, given that he was drafted as a high-ceiling, developmental QB who would likely learn behind Rodgers for 2-3 years.
