With a great discussion on the positive performance of Daniel Jones going on in another threat, I wanted to see if anyone can identify any under the radar backup QBs in the NFL that may be potential franchise QBs of the future? Something gold standards would be Tony Romo, Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, etc., who were backups but showed something special either coming out of college, during training camp/preseason, or on spot duty during previous seasons? And when given the chance to show it, they became franchise QBs.
Of course, conversely, who are potential fool's gold future franchise QBs in the mold of Matt Flynn, who may have looked like a potential franchise QB but failed to become one when given the chance.
I know that this is extremely subjective and speculative, but many posters on BBI have followed QBs from colleges as well as paid attention to some during offseasons/preseasons to possibly be excited about some young QB, whether rookie or young veteran.
I'll throw out Taysom Hill as a guy people appear to be excited about due to his versatility (which appears to be the flavor today), but I'm not sure that he's a franchise QB since I haven't seen him throw a lot.
The obvious choice would be Jordan Love on GB, the Packers traded up to get him. But if you're looking for an under the radar type, Jacob Eason on Indy could be an interesting guy to keep an eye on.
Then I woke up from my dream.
:-)
Also I could see Mariotta doing to Carr what Tannehill did to him in Tennessee.
Can Jalen Hurts have success like Lamar Jackson with the right system? Having said that, I don't think Jackson is good enough passer to become a true franchise QB long term.
Dude was a winner for sure. I'm on board with that pic jrud
Yeah...Hill was a bad example. But I would exclude Love in this category since he was actually drafted to be Rodgers's heir. He's not really under the radar, and if he doesn't turn into a franchise QB, I would say that he's a bust as a 1st round draft pick.
:-)
Kurt Warner, Tony Romo and Tom Brady were both pretty much ignored until they got on the field. Nobody really thought they were hot prospects. There are a lot more guys like Matt Flynn than those three guys.
I'm not aware of any developmental prospects who seem likely to break out. Maybe one of the backups in San Francisco — and both those guys have been seen a lot, neither is under the radar.
I always liked Ryan Finley. Filled in for Dalton last year but struggled in his handful of starts. Could see him one day getting one more crack at it...
The problem here is that the NFL is loaded with quality QBs. Maybe the most at one time in NFL history...?
I think PJ can Play
Really? You actually thought he was ever a top ten pick?
Yeah....I'll raise my Hand. I thought Fromm would play. It's not exactly a black mark to be wrong on a QB...most who are picked can't play in the NFL. Pitching to MLB Hitters....Hitting MLB Pitchers...Playing QB at the NFL Level is the Hardest and most unpredictable "Graduation" in all of Sports.

who thought that he was. More a comment about my UGA friends.

As a freshman he was considered a Heisman candidate, but each year and each time he got to "playoff" games he came up small. By the end of his sophomore year he was not really a 1st rounder anymore - despite decent numbers.

From possible top ten pick to fifth rounder to possible obscurity.

I did and many experts had him as a potential top 5 picks two years ago. I remember his game against Alabama in 2018 where he was outstanding and nearly pulled off the upset.
Got it. I never saw top of the draft ability. Project with upside? Sure. But I didn't like the arm ability and overall size. Seemed a 4th-5th rounder type to me.
Very good leader, though. One of those players who likely hit his ceiling in college...
Love for what he might eventually do, given that he was drafted as a high-ceiling, developmental QB who would likely learn behind Rodgers for 2-3 years.
