I was looking at my refrigerator tonight pondering the NFL.
(I have flat magnets on it showing the standings.)
The best teams in the NFC are the Giants, Packers, Cardinals and Rams.
The Giants are the only team in the conference who are trending upward. The rest are either holding steady or on a downward trend. Drew Brees breaking his ribs has pretty much made the Saints a “meh.” Even if he comes back in a few weeks, I just can’t see the Saints winning the conference. Seattle’s defense is horrific regardless of how good Wilson is and I just don’t see any NFC team that scares me. The Packers are the mountain to climb in order to get to the Super Bowl and we can beat them.
Yes. I said Super Bowl.
We have powerful lines on both sides of the ball. We have talent in the offensive skill positions and a terrific secondary. Bradbury is the best corner in the NFC. Peppers is a beast. Love is good. The linebackers are good. Hell, I think Yiadom is being coached up and playing really well.
And the team is getting better and better.
I’m not kidding. I think we are going to win out and enter the playoffs like a steamroller.
One bad loss could end this dream. But I don’t think that loss is coming. I think we’re winning out.
We’ll see.

I understand optimism, but this list is laughable, bordering on insane.
Reminds of me this scene...

you guys can't wait to jump on. In contrast the number of miserable fucks that hate everything Giants dwarfs this 1 opinion so there's that too.
I don't know, let the guy live. If your bothered by it that's sad.
Oh shut the fuck up already. You wanna go around white-knighting and acting like saying the 3-7 Giants are a top 4 team in the NFC as well as Super Bowl candidates than you're just as delusional. Clown.
Glad it took you two tries to pull off the reply feature you dumb blowhard.
Glad it took you two tries to pull off the reply feature you dumb blowhard.
Yeah definitely tried to do that. Enjoy the short bus and finger painting classes today.
And not for nothing, a lot of the so-called optimists railing others on this very thread were very active talking about the Giants next draft pick each week.
I was thrilled that they finally beat the Eagles, but I'm not going to pretend that the Eagles are actually a good team this season. It's only a gratifying win because the Giants haven't beaten them in forever.

Thank you, I actually will. Well not the short bus, school is closed today but finger painting sounds lovely and i'm sure my daughter will love showing me how it all works.

All good.
Good points made by both "sides":
1) There are many reasons for optimism
2) The team still has a long way to go be considered something other than a "bottom dweller"
Beating the Eagles and winning two games in a row are big steps. We'll see if we can string 3 in a row and beat some teams with winning records before we can consider that we've moved up to the next level.
Come On just say it then. Here, it's easy: Greg's not real fan
Go Giants
2011- 37-20 in the 2nd round
FWIW, I think we need to see them beat a team not circling the drain first. That said, I made a post in 2011 saying the Giants were primed for a run that was laughed at. We were 6-6 and had lost 4 straight but barely lost to the Packers 38-35 in the most recent game. If you were to go back to the forums, people wanted Coughlin DEAD. We had started another season 6-2 that fell to .500. It was bad. We know how that turned out.
I am not trying to make any comparisons to the seasons or teams. You don't need to tell me about those players. I remember all of them. The ONLY thing I am trying to say is that a lot of us can be wrong and that sometimes good things do happen for the NYG when you think all hope is lost.
One thing that being a fan of the NYG has taught me is that if you get into the tournament, anything can happen. We got a chance, however small. I am Andy Dufresne.
Can we get into the playoffs?
Yes.
If Yes
What happens if we enter the playoffs young, hungry and on a roll?
Anything.
I would not bet on shit, but the NFC ain't great.
If we lose to the Bengals forget it.
If we beat the Bengals and the Cardinals too, everything changes.
The run starts next week - go Browns this weekend.

Exactly what are the circumstance in which I can have an optimistic evaluation of the team that is not deemed delusional? Please let me know when it's ok. I'll follow your guidelines to the letter.
Can we beat a team with a winning record first? Or maybe how about just any team outside of the NFCE? Those don't seem like crazy criteria, do they?
Your premise was flawed from the moment you listed the Giants as one of the four best teams in the NFC in your OP. From that point on, it wasn't optimism, it was fiction.
Let's be honest though, you just wanted to tell us that you keep the NFL standings on your refrigerator in magnet form (although it doesn't sound like you actually list them in the proper order if you have the Giants atop the NFCE currently).
I never said the Giants we're atop of my NFC East magnet standings list. I said that I was pondering the teams as i looked at it.
Do it for Ralph C. Let's do this.
Come on. The rally cry is not for me. lol
I just put the wheels on a bandwagon.
"If you're in you're in. If you're out you're out."
Greg: I'm not saying that your evaluation of the team one way or another determines if you're a fan of the team or not.
I'm a dreamer and a cheerleader. I say 'If you eliminate analytic evaluation of the team what would be the greatest thing that the Giants could achieve this year that would provide us with a memorable season? If this was any Giant team over the last 8 years, I wouldn't be writing what I am about them. But this year's team is different and there is a shot. Why not root for it until it's over. It would be wild and they have a shot to get into the playoffs.
And yes. I've been this way for years but not recently.
Greg:
You're drafting a team only from a pool of NFC players and couches.
1) Who's the QB you take? Jones, Daulton, Smith or Wentz?
My pick is Jones.
2) What defensive line do you take?
Look, it's close. Philly and Washington are good up front. Dallas is far behind.
My pick is the Giants D line. Young, powerful and improving.
3) What o-line do you take?
The Giants are young and powerful there too. They have been pushing people around and pass protecting really well. I don't know what argument can be made against this.
4) What secondary would you take?
I'm sorry. Peppers, Ryan, Love Bradbury and Yiadom are playing really well.
I'm sold. I take them.
5) Linebackers: Who would you take?
Again, arguments can be made but I'll take Martinez, Fackrell and company over any corps in the east.
Punter and kicker:
Who's been better than Dixon and Gano?
I'll take them.
Coaching staff:
What other staff in the NFC east would you take over the one we have in place now?
I take them.
So, with all that taken into account along with the fact that The Giants are tied for the most wins in the division?
I stand by them winning the division and making noise in the playoffs.
(Note to Lawrence56: Join the "delusion."
What else do we have to do?
When they win the division we'll "zoom" and do a shot!
I've been of the belief that the Giants could sneak into the Playoffs, but ultimately be capped by having no edge rush. But here they are, 7th in the NFL in sacks.
However, they have the look RIGHT NOW of one of those annoying, ugly duckling teams nobody wants to play. A team with a strong running game and a tough D.
And we hang on to that as long as we can!
Let's say the everyone in the NFC east was 1-0 after the first week, would you calculate common opponents, how would you rank them on the refrigerator?
Now, what I don't understand, is prediction aspect of a self-proclaimed "dreamer and cheerleader." Do we go down to the sidelines to ask cheerleaders who they think is going to win? Why does the optimism need to come in prognostication form?
I love days that are 75 degrees and sunny, nice long walk, maybe a little afternoon breeze and I'd be happy to talk to anyone about our shared love of these days to any degree of optimism that we will get many.
It doesn't mean I should run around telling everyone that it's going to be 75 and sunny tomorrow. Especially when we've had only glimpses of the sun for the last 4 years or so.

Ok. On its way.
Bingo!
I’m not saying mine is the only way to look at the team. I’m
Saying this is what I think about this team, in this season, right now. Yes, I have a history - and now it’s a long time ago - of looking at the extreme upside of things. I’m not an idiot. You didn’t see me posting this type of thing over the last 3 years. This time, it’s different. The Giants are good. Like I said. One bad loss can end it but as of right now? My
Honest evaluation is that the Giants are the best team in the East and among the best in the conference.
Climb aboard or not. But, damn. What else do we have?

fans of the same team take issue with fans who want to think we will be good. Its something I'll never be able to understand.
If you got some monetary value from being right about the Giants sucking I'd get it. But unless that's happening what's the issue? Afraid to be let down?
I like to deal in reality. Optimism is one thing. Blithely asserting that a 3-7 team that hasn't beaten a team outside of its own rancid division is far beyond mere optimism. It's pure delusion.
Naah, it really isn't. Its called fandom and in our division stinks so we can definitely win it if we keep trending upward. I think the superbowl talk is a bit much (and hyperbole in part) but playoffs isn't.
If you only want to think well of the team when they are definitively good you have every right. But shitting on people and calling them delusional because they think better of a bad team than you do doesn't make any sense.
Thank you for that balanced view.
Are you “The Entertainah?”
:)
Love that guy on YouTube

3-7 and we are going to the Superbowl, wow, I have no problem with anyone feeling optimistic and saying that, it is nice to hear good things about the team, nothing wrong with that at all, but I would not say that right now at all, I am a show me on the field guy, and am happy to see us beat a 2-7 and 3-5-1 team in back to back games. Looking ahead we are due to get back 4 defensive players, we are developing a bend but don't break personality on defense, our QB has not turned the ball over the last 2 games and won, he got results with something he is working hard on, all reasons to have hope. So I am happy to have any hope in this team and especially in this season..
Ignore the Superbowl part.

Exactly.
That’s just it. We have a shot. It would be amazing. Do I believe the Giants are the best team in the East?
Yes.
Can we win a playoff game if we get there?
Yes.
Can we advance further?
Yes.
But we could also not make it at all. I just don’t see that happening. I think we make it. And if the Giants get to the playoffs?
The door is open for anything to happen because they will be a dangerous team.
Evaluate the team as you like.
But there is no reason not to cling to this possibility because it would be a rush.
All I’m saying is that we all should be clinging to that possibility.
My reasoning goes back to 07' when I placed 38/1 odds bet on the GMen to win it all before the season started. They weren't favored, played like shit in some games and beat the weaker teams. Talent wise in 07', they had no business beating any teams in the playoffs, let alone a stout GB and NE team. Get hot and figure it out at the right time and anything is possible.
Seattle was pegged as the NFC championship contenders (by some pundits) 6 weeks ago and look where they are now. I lot can change between now and then.
This said, if we can't keep the OL and running game moving in the right direction, don't expect miracle results like we did in 07'.
But winning the NFC East division, even in the bad shape it is, would be a nice feat and is certainly in the team's grasp. Particularly after the last three crappy years and the poor start the team had in 2020.
Use it as motivating springboard to continue the improvement in 2021 and keep us out of the abyss for the near future.
Wow! Great stuff.
