NFT: Peleton or alternative?

DC Gmen Fan : 11/18/2020 10:14 am
We are contemplating pulling trigger on a bike simply because we are not going to gyms, and with the weather getting colder, walking or running outside is going to be less likely because we are big pansies about the cold.

So Peleton seems to be loved by all but is there a good cheaper alternative? One where if you don't ride it 3 -5 times a week you wont feel like you're wasting money?
If you get the Peloton
cjac : 11/18/2020 10:18 am : link
you will ride it 3-5 times a week

if you get the alternative you probably wont.

My wife twisted my arm to buy it and at a minimum i'm 4 days a week. Now that the weather is turning to winter i'll use it more.

delivered yesterday, so far (1 ride) it's great and I can see myself using it often.

when initially I thought it was more of a women's exercise device.
I'm a Peloton owner

and I absolutely love it.

There are sure to be plenty who chime in with comments that there are cheaper bikes as good or better, and they may be right.

No rebuttal from me on that point, but can simply confirm that we've found Peloton to be worth every bit of the price.

another good thread with feedback earlier you might check out as well.

Personally, we have had it for years and we use it constantly. High quality product, high quality content & instructors. In addition to the bike, you will also get constant content for: strength, cardio, walking, running, yoga, meditation, stretching classes.

I'd recommend it based on our experience.

My wife and I bought a bike off Amazon from a company called Joroto for less than $500 and got a Peloton app subscription.

The bike itself is well made and sturdy, we've had it for 5 months and used it regularly without any issues.

While you don't get the benefit of connecting to Peloton's official "leaderboard" or resistance monitors, it's easy enough to approximate the resistance on the knob to ride along with folks who spent $2500 on a bike.

id go with peloton...
Italianju : 11/18/2020 10:29 am : link
i use one at work. When quarantine started my wife (big soul cycle person) wanted a bike but didnt want to spend the money on peloton. I cant remember the bike we went with but it was about half the cost of peloton. I rode it a couple times and did not like it at all, i was too used to the higher quality bike. My wife used it more, but didnt like it either. We eventually sold it when soul cycle came out with a home bike. By that point i was back in the office so i just use the peloton at work, which i prefer even to the soul cycle one which i think is more expensive then Peloton.

What was your order date? We ordered ours 2 weeks ago, ETA is around New Years.
I also bought the regular model
UConn4523 : 11/18/2020 10:42 am : link
its $1900, and you can pay it over 39 months if you want. If you add in the cost of the monthly membership you should be right around or under monthly gym costs for 2 people. It also comes with classes so my wife will probably cancel her $30 online yoga class membership.

Personally the money isn't as much a factor for me. I want to be able to get cardio in 5 days a week and its just not feasible for me to do so with the winter setting in, and issues i have running (knee pain). And when you spend good money on something chances are you will have a better user experience and feel compelled to use it more.
Here is a coupon code for $100 off Peloton accessories - 5BVDA9
scotepsu22 : 11/18/2020 10:50 am : link
The code is 5BVDA9 in case you end up ordering.

You'll have to add the accessories into the cart, and then the code will work.

When Apple announced their fitness app coming later this year, my wife and I bought a standard exercise bike and plan on using their fitness app. I believe the app is $80 for the year, but they have a new bundle coming out that includes Apple News, Apple TV, Apple Arcade, 2 TB iCloud for family and Apple Music for family all for $30/month. I'm already paying $25/mo between the music and iCloud and it would bump up to $30 when my free year of Apple TV is up so it was a no brainer...

We also got a set of the bowflex slectech dumbbells to be able to do some weight stuff with.
Thanks guys

Do you get the shoes, mat, monitors too? I think I've heard the peleton shoes aren't great but can't remember if that's accurate

I ordered October 29th and when ordering they said delivery could take up to 8 weeks (longer for the new model which I didn't get), but when I went to select a delivery date the soonest was yesterday (just over 2 weeks) so I think it depends on location maybe. There are a bunch of peloton stores/wholesale locations in the Boston metro, so maybe that helped. Not sure.

Personally I wouldn't, might as well get a cheaper bike in all liklihood but there's no reason why you cant just use it as a bike. You can probably just toggle off/on the membership as well so if you aren't going to use it for an extended period of time you can cancel and restart whenever you want

Thats always me saying dont buy the Peloton Shoes. they are not good. Go to Amazon and buy Tommaso bike shoes and buy the red clips
you can get any mat
UConn4523 : 11/18/2020 11:37 am : link
you don't need to buy theirs, just make sure the dimensions are long/wide enough to accommodate. The peloton dimensions are on the site. Shoes I don't know but my wife has hers and I'm going to wait to get it to buy them, probably will buy my own, non-Peloton version.

I purchased mine as an xmas gift for my wife either 3 or 4 years ago. the holiday special came with the mat/shoes/monitor.

Would definitely recommend the mat. You will sweat like an animal.

Have not used the monitor, but keep telling myself i should try it. Not even sure where it is at this point.

I needed a second pair of shoes since the ones that came with it were for my wife. I decided not to pay thier price. So I bought some other brand on Amazon for $60 or so. Have had no issues with them, so glad to have saved the $40-50 vs what they were asking, if memory serves.

Regarding the shoes
ManningLobsItBurressAlone : 11/18/2020 11:48 am : link
I went to a bike shop and tried on different cycling shoes there, and then you just have to get the Delta clips that the bike shop sold as well. They'll attach them right there in front of you.

Was crazy to try on 3 different brands of shoes at the same size, and see the differences in fit/comfort. Personally, I need to actually try on the shoe, and wouldn't be comfortable ordering a pair online without seeing the fit.

I'm sure you can get any of the other accessories outside of Peloton for cheaper. We didn't do the mat, and we used the heart rate monitor that my wife had gotten from Orange Theory and that works perfectly.

Just buy a decent bike trainer(15-400$) and set your bike in front of the TV.

Been doing that for years and still get 110+miles a week in my basement in. Not same as outdoors, but works just fine.

Roadbike, Wahoo Kickr and Zwift makes indoor riding somewhat bearable.

Is getting a Peloton Bike+
RC in MD : 11/18/2020 1:11 pm : link
worth the additional cost over the original Bike?

Right now, you can get the Original Bike for $1895 ($350 discount), so is the Bike+ worth the $2495 price?

I didn't think the new one was worth the additional $$. A monitor that can turn around so you can do yoga or non-bike workouts and an upgraded audio system (something else too maybe, but not enough to make it worth it - to me)

Yeah...I don't need the rotating monitor and the improved sound isn't really a big sell. I did like the Auto-follow Resistance, but I can do that manually. Was just wondering if the bike was functionally better or not. It appears that both are good bikes without the extras.

WE didn't think twice when ordering and just went with the regular unit. All the added benefits of the plus didn't translate to the upcharge for us. If my wife wants to do yoga she can use her laptop (which you can just log into Peloton app).

Cool...thanks to you and pj. I need to convince my wife on this since she hates me buying fitness equipment. But I've been dealing with a core injury that's made my entire right hip area all messed up, so it's been tough running when it flares up. I'm thinking that a no-impact machine would be a nice way to mitigate for my limitation right now.

Also, the monthly payment plan sounds pretty sweet.

UConn4523 : 11/18/2020 1:47 pm : link
they make it easy to pay for, and no interest. We actually have an Affirm account already so we just used that. I think it comes out to $60-something a month for 36 months.

As we were looking into them Costco happened to have a blowout deal on the Nordic Track version, the model S10i.

I can't compare because I haven't tried the Peloton (I'm sure it's great) but we've been pretty happy with the Nordic Track. Has the screen and access to workouts and trails, etc. which we got free for a year.

Echelon Sport Connect bike after looking at a bunch of reviews for 500 bucks off the Walmart website. Solid quality and easy to put together. I subscribe to the peloton app and use the echelon app to track distance cadence and resistance on my phone while watching the peloton class on my tv.

I am quite happy with it. Heads up Chase sapphire credit card is offering a 60 dollar peloton credit on the preferred card and 120 on the reserved.

I originally wanted the peloton bike itself but that 40 bucks a month is rough Can’t see myself paying for that monthly plus a gym membership down the line once it’s safe.

Would anyone be able to compare the Peloton to a trainer?

I borrowed a friend's Wahoo Kickr Snap a earlier during the pandemic, and my wife is considering getting me one for my birthday this year, but know she would never use it. As someone who likes to ride my road bike, will I hate the Peloton? I liked the zwift and Bkool platforms, to me Peloton just looks to be a spin bike... is it or am I being judgemental?

Was always a cyclist, and did running for convenience. As life went on, gave up running due to knee and back pain. Frequently did spin classes in the gym 2X's per week. So I was a bit skeptical when my wife got the Peloton for my birthday 4 yrs ago, "Not going to use it much..." was my thought. Wrong.

During the nice weather I split road riding and Peloton. While I used to ride in 20-30 degree weather or rain, no more, getting too old for that. Peloton instead. Can't get a road ride in during daylight hours....Peloton is always there. Multi tasking....watch rerun of Giants beating the eagles...rode Peloton. Don't want to put your life in someone else's hands while they are texting and driving...Peloton is crash free. If you say you won't get as good a workout in on a Peloton...that is on YOU.

Your individual workout, your frequency, intensity is on you. Variety, quality, expertise of training...Peloton has that covered. This is a mental thing for people who have logged road miles. While Peloton can't replace a 30 mile ride through beautiful surroundings, it has a lot to offer. I still get out on the road bike as often as I can. I do believe a real bike ride improves balance, heightens awareness, and it is a different workout (not ALWAYS pedaling like on a stationary bike). But as long as you can afford a Peloton, you will use it...a lot.

And yes, my wife uses it more than I do now, so I do question who the gift was for....?

I've had the Echo Bike for the past 2 years and love it; however, Peloton appears to be a different kind of a workout bike. Echo Bike is more conducive to a shorter, interval style workouts (almost like doing sprints) as opposed to Peloton, which appears to be a longer duration workouts (although I'm sure you can also do interval style workouts on it). That's why I'm still looking into Peloton (while still trying to convince the wife of its benefits).
