Just to piss off the BBI brethren who don't think that is a Christmas movie!
It's not a Christmas movie. It's a movie that's set during Christmas. Christmas is inconsequential to the plot.
You can say the same about a lot of Christmas movies - White Christmas, for example. It could have happened at any point in the winter and been no different other than the song at the end.
is integral to Die Hard because that's why McClane was going to California and attending a Christmas Party.
Of course they could have made up a different reason for him to go there, but also the Grinch could have stolen a random Saturday, but he didn't, he stole Christmas. You can make any Christmas movie not a Christmas movie if you try hard enough.
Plus Now I have a machine gun, ho ho ho doesn't work if it's not really Christmas time.
If Die Hard is a Christmas movie, then why isn't Lethal Weapon?
is a Christmas movie or not, or if Lethal Weapon is.
If people want to call it one go ahead, makes no difference to me or on the contrary if people are offended people consider them Christmas movies then don't consider them Christmas movies.
My point was Christmas is more than a coincidence with Die Hard. It's wrong to say it just so happens to be Christmas season during the movie and it's irrelevant to the plot (like it might be with Lethal Weapon). With Die Hard Christmas IS IMO part of the plot, the dialog, the wardrobes, etc..
But people can consider it (and other movies like Lethal Weapon) Christmas movies or not and I'm fine with it.
It's Christmas, and there are Christmas decorations and scenes all over the movie, but it's a neo-noir heist movie. Christmas is a setting, that's all.
For some reason I have it in my head that it took place over Thanksgiving.
Good one!

Storyline
Frank is a retired Lt. Col. in the US Army. He's blind and impossible to get along with. Charlie is at school and is looking forward to going to university; to help pay for a trip home for Christmas, he agrees to look after Frank over Thanksgiving. Frank's niece says this will be easy money, but she didn't reckon on Frank spending his Thanksgiving in New York.

"inconsequential to the plot"
Are you kidding me lol? It's set on Christmas Eve, the lead characters end game is being able to spend Christmas with his family, Hans knows the building will be understaffed because its Christmas. There's the plot.
Many other things that help...
Christmas In Hollis plays, Let it Snow plays, Ho Ho HO now I have a machine gun... can only say that at Christmas. Christmas affects the story, same with Lethal Weapon AND Gremlins.
so is The French Connection.
Here is Santa Popeye trying to deliver a Christmas package to someone who has apparently had a bad experience with a shopping mall Santa.
but has the feel of one is Dan In Real Life.
It has the extended families gathering at the grandparents house in the fall for their annual get-together weekend. Big family meals, football on the lawn, family walks on the beach. Just has the feel of Thanksgiving.
For some reason I have it in my head that it took place over Thanksgiving.
Good one!

Note the Christmas trees in the truck behind Riggs
Santa hat on the vendor
Murtaugh's house decorated for Christmas
Michael Hunsacker about to swig some egg nog before getting iced by Mr. Joshua.

Certainly not a hill I care to die on.

Great choice. That might be my favorite movie of all time, in any category. “I’m walking on air ... walking ... on air.”
Very underrated movie, too, btw
Just watched that last night with my youngest. “I got a rock.”
But still a good double-feature!

Yet if it was played on the TV at a house party over the holidays, including XMAS, it would fit like a glove. Same with Lethal Weapon.

and at least part of The Ice Storm is set at Thanksgiving...
The Thing
Jeremiah Johnson
The Shining
Rocky
Death Hunt w/ Lee Marvin and Bronson
First Blood
Mighty Joe Young
Those are the movies I grew up associating with Thanksgiving. I miss that tradition.
+1, since I was a kid, and I'm 62 now!

Good flick!
2) If you opine that Die Hard is a Christmas movie, you're simply wrong ... and, you probably pronounce 'Reese's Pieces' as "ree-sees pee-sees".
Scrooged - also about being thankful/appreciative. A Bill Murray classic!
Yes, sappy as hell, but fun - Love, Actually. (Is it dusty in here??)

It used to air every year, was a family tradition. Gonna have to buy it on DVD!
