JJ Watt

CMicks3110 : 11/19/2020 11:41 am
Do you think the Giants should consider bringing him in next year? He seems like he would be an excellent veteran presence on a young roster. He wants to go to a contender and I think people see us as being on the rise. We also need a pass rusher.

Just a thought.
If you let Williams walk
allstarjim : 11/19/2020 11:43 am : link
then yes, of course.
Pass - his best days are behind him and he’s
Zeke's Alibi : 11/19/2020 11:44 am : link
probably going to sign with Pitt anyway on a short deal.
Adding to Zeke’s post which I agree with,
Big Blue '56 : 11/19/2020 11:46 am : link
he’s also injury prone. Big risk, imo

and he will be looking for a more direct shot at a SB. I see Pittsburgh or New England being places he could land but don't count our GB either.
I’ll take

His brother.
We may be on the rise (hopefully)
giants#1 : 11/19/2020 11:54 am : link
but I wouldn't put us in the 'contender' category yet. Pitt makes a lot of sense: 34D plus he'll play with his brother.

GB/TB (if Brady stays)/KC/BAL/BUF/SEA would all be ahead of the Giants.
no get more players like Bradberry, Williams, Martinez (age 25/26/27)
Eric on Li : 11/19/2020 12:00 pm : link
adding a quality WR and CB in that age range would free them up to go in a lot of different directions in the draft - but ideally zero in on some high end players for the second level of the defense (whether it's OLB or ILB or both).
Only if he is willing to sign a 1 year deal
Jay on the Island : 11/19/2020 12:03 pm : link
for around $10 million.

The Giants would be better off following this years FA strategy of signing players in their mid 20's as they did with Martinez, Bradberry, Fackrell, and Austin Johnson.

JJ Watt is a move that a contender makes and While I expect the Giants to be in position to make the playoffs next season I don't think they will be contenders for another year.
The only player over 30 I would target
Jay on the Island : 11/19/2020 12:06 pm : link
Is Ryan Kerrigan and that's only if he is willing to sign a 1-2 year deal for a reasonable amount. That's also assuming that the Giants didn't sign another OLB like Dupree, Barrett, etc.

I hope that the Giants are aggressive in trying to address the hole at WR and CB in FA especially if Golladay hits the market. Then they can use the draft to address edge rusher, ILB, TE, and RB.
I would be interested in Kerrigan as well
LBH15 : 11/19/2020 12:11 pm : link
I think he has plenty in the tank.
Jay,

good posts, except I wouldn’t sign Watt even for a year. As you say, if you’re gonna go FA, stick with the 25-27 group and continue building through the draft
Stick with
PaulN : 11/19/2020 12:42 pm : link
A working formula, JJ Watt is not going to want us anyway, he wants a Superbowl contender, and we want to stick with the 25-27 year old type player, we must continue to fill holes in the roster and look for upgrades where it makes sense, we need a center, at worst to be a backup, but if injuries hit, Gates can play tackle and guard, we need a tackle or guard, you want Fleming next year? We need a top wideout, a go to guy, a number 1 or at minimum a 1b, we need a good 2 way tight end badly. We need a pass rusher badly, a top end guy, a starter opposite Bradberry. We need a 3 down inside linebacker, and we need another good defensive lineman who can fit right into our rotation.
Sorry
PaulN : 11/19/2020 12:47 pm : link
Meant to say top end pass rusher badly and a starting corner opposite Bradberry, then we can be flexible and play man to man and blitz more when it is right to do.

IF we dip big into the free agency market, go for a young player going into his second contract.

I would prefer not to either but if the Giants lost Tomlinson or Leonard Williams and they wanted a stopgap then Watt would be a solid addition for a year.

The Giants can't address every hole this offseason. If they wanted to wait until next offseason to address the DL they could go with a veteran to rotate with BJ Hill. Hopefully they re-sign Austin Johnson because he has been solid in his limited snaps.
Hold on a minute...
Mike from Ohio : 11/19/2020 1:10 pm : link
you said he wants to go to a contender. Do you think players look at the Giants as a destination to win a championship in the near term?

Many may see the Giants as a team on the rise. But veterans are not coming here next year because they are looking to win a superbowl before they retire. That is beyond silly.
He'll be 32, and if he plays in
Section331 : 11/19/2020 1:40 pm : link
Houston's remaining games, it will be the 2nd full season he's had in the last 5. He's not the freakish athlete he was before the back injuries. I would take a hard pass.
I’m not going to assume
UConn4523 : 11/19/2020 1:42 pm : link
what’s he’s targeting for money so if the money is right then sure. That said I think he’s love to play in Pitt and might do so on a discount so I doubt we’d be in consideration.

They should have. But LBs are not important in days NFL. I know that’s true because I read it here.

Obviously you haven't read the Ralph C thread where we are going to the NFC Championship game this year in Green Bay. ;)
