NFT: Wonder Woman 1984 streaming on HBO Max on 12/25

for current subscribers, same day it's released in theaters. That's pretty awesome.
Wonder Woman - ( New Window )

They filmed some of that near where I live in NOVA. A closed down, empty mall that has been set for redevelopment into a "Town Center" for about 10 years now.
If this trend continues

we can all expect $50/month streaming services.
They are putting it on HBO MAX

at no extra charge for subscribers. They wnat more sign ups for the service and they are losing already sunk $$$'s by not having this released. Plus, it is a way to drive more folks to the potential sequel (3rd WW) and drive more interest in Zach Snyder's Justice League re-cut (Snyder Cut).

I am psyched to see this movie and I think Disney is blowing their chance to keep Black Widow relevant. That movie, the further away from Endgame it goes the harder it will be to generate the pop they had been hoping for.

I think it will stay more ala carte to have the ability to purchase one-time streams on top of your release. Similar to what Disney+ already did with Mulan. I would not anticipate every movie release being included with a streaming platform. They will price out too many streaming subscribers. Perhaps multiple plans.
I wouldnt worry about streaming prices
UConn4523 : 11/19/2020 6:38 pm : link
those are primarily dictated by licensing and TV shows. HBO is only doing this to get a wider subscriber base, otherwise it would be a $30 charge give or take.
The big difference between this and Mulan on Disney+
Scyber : 11/20/2020 9:49 am : link
Is the base price of HBO Max is already much higher than Disney+. So the one-off fee to watch it is probably less likely.

I just wish HBO Max had 4k....and was on roku.

its crazy how far behind HBO has been with streaming. They seemed to be the last on on board, then they had the shake up with HBO Go vs. HBO Max, and now their content isn't offered in 4K yet. Just really bizarre.

I actually know someone that is pretty close this that for WB. And from what I understand, its even crazier on the inside. He actually helped develop the DC streaming service DC Universe. Since the launch of HBO Max they have decided to move the video content off of DC Universe (to HBO Max) and convert it to a digital comic book platform. But the crazy part is that the content on DC Universe is already streaming in 4k (and on Roku). So they are moving it from one service to another and losing platforms and 4k as part of the process.

Yeah, I've had access for months because we subscribe to HBO but haven't been able to watch it on our TV since we "only" have a Fire Stick and a Roku. And the bastards discontinued HBO Go when they brought on Max so there was no on demand HBO streaming platform for months on maybe the two biggest streaming add-on's.

Thankfully, it's finally on Fire Stick now! Roku deal is in the works too.
Eh . . . I want to see it
eclipz928 : 11/20/2020 10:43 am : link
but I'm gonna 7-day free trial it. HBO is just not that appealing to me.

But yes, the cost of streaming services is becoming an issue. Hulu just raised their prices again by $10. I'll likely switch back to Sling in December.
The Mulan fiasco was a disaster
Knineteen : 11/20/2020 12:54 pm : link
I don't know how successful that model would be going forward.

The first WW film made $821.8 million. I'd imagine WB would want to meet or even exceed that mark. Exactly how does that work going down the HBO Max road?
it won't
UConn4523 : 11/20/2020 1:15 pm : link
I think they are trying to recoup costs and basically just break even so they can fund future projects (like Nolan with Tenet).

Well Mulan was also hurt the fact that it wasn't really a good movie.

I think most studios know that movies released during the pandemic aren't going to hit the regular numbers. There are a few reasons to release now:

First, the money is already spent on the film, the longer they wait to release it, the longer they wait to make any of that money back. A bird in the hand and all that.

Second, it is going to take a long time for theater viewership to hit pre pandemic numbers. Even after there is a vaccine, people aren't going to be flocking to the theaters for a while. In addition, many theaters are closing permanently. A 24 screen theater near me just closed permanently.

Third, when studios do start releasing movies again in theaters, there is going to be a huge backlog of films and they will all be fighting for the same theater goers. They normally plan releases out years in advance so the dates don't conflict with other big movies. This will be impossible if every studio waits on all of their movies. So the small box office will be split even further.

Finally, they really want to boost HBO Max. Since they already know they aren't going to make tons (see above), boosting a recurring revenue stream like HBO Max is a good fallback. If they add 200k users b/c of this movie, that is an additional $36m a year. 1m more users and that is $180m a year.
You have to keep in mind that the film is also
eclipz928 : 11/20/2020 4:09 pm : link
being released in theaters. And while they're not going to make anywhere near the expected revenue from box office in the US, other countries will bolster the numbers. It's a calculation that they can eat the most costs by releasing it now in conjuction with letting it go to streaming, as opposed to waiting potentially another full year and doing a theater release only.
