Vince Dooley called Scott the greatest player he ever coached, ranking him ahead of even Herschel Walker.
The story behind that was that he was considered a head case. He fought constantly with Vince Dooley and quit the team before his junior year to play in the CFL. Bill Stanfill, who was a teammate and friend of his at Georgia, told Don Shula that Scott still wanted to play in the NFL and to give him a shot.
"Scott fell out with Vince Dooley over the coach’s decision to send the 1968 SEC champions to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans rather than the team’s choice of the Orange Bowl in Miami, where the Dogs could have gone. The team ended up making a lousy showing in a 16-2 bowl loss to Arkansas, with tales of the hellraising they did in the Big Easy quickly making their way back to Athens. The rift with Dooley led Scott to leave UGA and play pro ball in Canada since juniors weren’t eligible to sign with the NFL in those days."

He was a really great player in that defensive backfield, they were one of the greatest teams ever, no weaknesses, offensive line, power running, explosive running, explosive passing, and a great defense without the big name players, they always reminded me of Lombardi's Packers, they could beat you in many different ways, could beat you at your game, Jake was always in the middle of that, so many big interceptions, no doubt one of the best.
Really loved that early to mid 70’s dolphins teams
was one of the most underrated players in NFL and college football history. He had great instincts, and a fantastic feel for the game. Very savvy and quick. RIP. God bless. Prayers to his family and friends.
