RIP Jake Scott

FatMan in Charlotte : 11/20/2020 9:58 am
The former Miami Dolphins of the undefeated team are dwindling in numbers.

I always enjoyed watching Scott play.

RIP Jake
One last champagne pop for Jake....

that had two broken arms and said that is when you find out who your true friends are?
As a kid (12 in 1972)

I was given a pass to be a Dolphin fan in those days because the Giants were so God awful for so long. Even my father quietly watched them. My room was covered with Sports Illustrated covers of Miami players. RIP #57
does anyone recall

a rare achievement for a safety
I don't know about the two broken arms...
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/20/2020 10:18 am : link
I do know Scott has been one of the more reclusive Dolphins and seemingly avoided group celebrations and went years without talking to Shula.

I just saw that he passed away from complications after falling down a stairwell
A great player

and part of one of the best safety tandems ever with Dick Anderson.

Sad news. RIP.

Maybe it was Anderson - one of the two.

The all-Rogaine safety tandem, back in the days when balding players didn't shave their heads...hehe

No, it was Scott, although it was wrists not arms.

Scott also was known for playing hurt. He played the 1971 season’s Super Bowl with two broken wrists that caused him to say, “I know who my friends are when I go to the bathroom.”
Amazing how low (7th round) he was drafted
DCOrange : 11/20/2020 10:31 am : link
At Georgia, Scott was an All-American and the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year in 1968. He led the SEC in interceptions each year and in punt return yardage in 1968, when he helped Georgia win the conference championship. He led Georgia in interceptions in 1967 with six interceptions and 1968 with ten interceptions.

Vince Dooley called Scott the greatest player he ever coached, ranking him ahead of even Herschel Walker.
Scott..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/20/2020 10:33 am : link
also went years not talking to Dooley. I wonder what strained his relationships with his former coaches.
DCOrange
Greg from LI : 11/20/2020 10:34 am : link
The story behind that was that he was considered a head case. He fought constantly with Vince Dooley and quit the team before his junior year to play in the CFL. Bill Stanfill, who was a teammate and friend of his at Georgia, told Don Shula that Scott still wanted to play in the NFL and to give him a shot.
Rift
DCOrange : 11/20/2020 10:35 am : link
"Scott fell out with Vince Dooley over the coach’s decision to send the 1968 SEC champions to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans rather than the team’s choice of the Orange Bowl in Miami, where the Dogs could have gone. The team ended up making a lousy showing in a 16-2 bowl loss to Arkansas, with tales of the hellraising they did in the Big Easy quickly making their way back to Athens. The rift with Dooley led Scott to leave UGA and play pro ball in Canada since juniors weren’t eligible to sign with the NFL in those days."

A great, great team. Csonka, Warfield, Larry Little, Griese, Buoniconti. List goes on and on. Back when football was a brutal game. RIP.

The No name Defense
PaulN : 11/20/2020 12:24 pm : link
He was a really great player in that defensive backfield, they were one of the greatest teams ever, no weaknesses, offensive line, power running, explosive running, explosive passing, and a great defense without the big name players, they always reminded me of Lombardi's Packers, they could beat you in many different ways, could beat you at your game, Jake was always in the middle of that, so many big interceptions, no doubt one of the best.
Really loved that early to mid 70’s dolphins teams
