NFT: Music thread. New. Old. Classic. What are you listening to?

Jalapeno : 11/21/2020 11:43 pm
What tune are you digging right now?

I have been listening to too much news and sports talk radio for the past year that I have fell behind in my first true love of music.

Any new music worth sharing?
Or classics to revisit?
Underground? (with or without Velvet)

This page is always good for a music wormhole to dive into.

Thanks in advance.

Nice, same here. I just associate Neil Young and some others with autumn.

Same with The Amazing, a ridiculously good band from Sweden that ranges from psych folk to prog rock. They may be my favorite band of the last 10 years and I really can't overstate their talent as musicians.

My Morning Jacket released a new one last spring, The Waterfall II. Apparently The Waterfall was conceived as a triple album. I love those guys but Jim James has been fully submerged in hubris territory for at least 8 years now. But this is really, really good, IMO the best thing they've done since Z.

I like Machine Gun Kelly as he made the (forced?) genre switch from hip hop to pop/punk.

Can definitely notice the Blink-182 influence since Travis Barker got involved with him, but still maintains a unique blended sound.

Tickets to my Downfall is the best album I've heard in forever.

Any pop/punk fans or even those Gen-Xers who like the grunge/alternative you will like it.

Joshua Ray Walker and Cave People

If you’re at all a fan of country music or singer song writer genre check out Joshua Ray Walker from Dallas, Texas. The young man is a great song writer, singer and guitar player. If you happen to see a picture of him before you listen, you’ll probably think it’s some kind of spoof because the guy is very heavy. (I don’t know why his size should matter anyway). He is the real deal and the best “new” musician I’ve heard this year.

His record “Glad You Made It” was released this year but he has another great record he put out last year. Both records are terrific from first track to the last. He also plays with a band called the Ottoman Turks who I haven’t fully explored yet. There were a couple of weeks this year where all I would listen to was JRW. The music is legit. Rolling Stone review linked below.

Another artist on heavy repeat this year has been a Cave People. I saw this band in Philly last year, had not heard them before, listened a lot ever since. It’s an indie project of Dave Tomaine and he actually put out a new record recorded during the pandemic. Lotta good music coming out of Philly.

Thanks for the tip on The Amazing. I’ll check them out. I’m with you on MMJ in that they kinda lost me after Z - though they’re so damn good live that I still kept up with them. With that said, I actually loved Waterfall 1 and really like 2 as well.

I'd preordered his Archives Vol 2 and yesterday the downloads became available. The amount of incredible material he wrote in just that four year span of 1972-76 covered in this set is nothing short or remarkable. Lots of Crazy Horse in there too. Just stunning.

You can never go wrong with Neil. Such an incredible talent. I have so much of his music, but his live performances at "Massey Hall" and "The Cellar Door" are always compelling.

Id go through their stuff chronologically, theres a definite progression from folk to prog while always under that psychedelic umbrella. The first, Gentle Stream, is probably my favorite but Picture You is a legit achievement as a piece of art.

Feel the same way about MMJ. Used to follow them for stretches of the summer from 04-12 and still check them out anytime theyre on the Meriweather/Philly/NYC stretch. So many great times and a great crew of fans that I got to know well over the years.

I wasn't huge into that scene, generally speaking its not my kind of music, but something about those guys hooked me. Id still count Geoff Rickly among my favorite frontmen. If you like Dire Straits, check out some of Knopfler's solo work: Get Lucky, Ragpickers Dream, Sailing to Philadelpia, Tracker and a great one with Emmylou Harris entitled All the Roadrunning. He never makes a bad album and they're always perfectly engineered so they sound magnificent.

Nice set up. When I upgraded originally, I decided I wanted to go vintage first, because I felt I could get a little bang for my buck on a budget. So I bought the Denon, and I paired it with a 1973 Marantz 2245, which has a really nice, warm phono stage. I wanted to buy a set that I would keep when I eventually upgrade again. So I can have both a vintage and modern set up.

I do clean records, but still by hand. A nice VPI like the one you have is next up. I do know what a difference they make.

NEIL YOUNG
x meadowlander : 11/23/2020 1:07 pm : link
I've spent quite a bit of time browsing his archive website. Just incredible - I love the way he laid it out in a timeline so you can see when songs were recorded, albums that were never released.

Hitchiker would have been one of his best albums, had he pulled the trigger. Homegrown is a treasure to Neil Fan's, like buried treasure he held onto forever, to have new, GOOD material from his prime years is just flat out awesome.

The Massey Hall live album released here I believe is Neil Young at his absolute peak - his voice at it's strongest and most pure and the tales he tells of all this *new* material he's been writing while on the road - as he plays them stripped, acoustic, some incomplete - just hit after hit after hit. Incredible. He talks about an upcoming appearance on the Johnny Cash show - that appearance is what laid the groundwork for *Harvest*, the collaborations with James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Ben Keith - the formation of the Stray Gators.

Love it.

Also, when Autumn hits, I'm drawn again and again to Laura Veirs' *July Flame* - a gorgeous, melancholy album with a fantastic, dark vibe.

love the old marantz receivers, still on my bucket list, they've gotten pricey, but I still look. I will say that when I bought the VPI Cyclone I was truly amazed at what that thing did. actually a decent bit of Sara Bareilles. My 4 year old daughter has taken quite a liking to "Brave", so we've got that one on repeat more often than I'd like, and I can usually negotiate a few of her other songs into the mix.

also threw on Something Corporate's "Leaving Through the Window" album on the other day. Gave me some serious nostalgia for my college and early 20s days.

The 400 uses the 7868 output tubes. I like to roll them. Right now I just put some NOS NIB matching quad General Electric tubes in there. They sound quite nice. It came with the original Fisher tubes and they still sound fantastic. I've resisted the urge to go with anything new like Sovtek, Electro Harmonix, or Tung-Sol because I don't want to enlarge the tube sockets and not be able to use original tubes. The price of vacuum tubes has become ridiculous. I have three Fisher tube amps: A nice little KX-90, an X-202b and the 400, which I like best. Right now my speakers are AR2ax and they match up well with tubes. I just divested myself of my final vintage solid state rig when I sold my Sansui 9090db. It was hard to let it go--but I had to thin the herd.
