I get it that the OL is poor at pass protecting,so downfield throws are almost non-existent. Even though it limits the field, have Jones roll out more often as a means to buy time for receivers to get downfield.

Shurmur and Eli had a lot of just short of the sticks 3rd down completions....

I hate this dumb narrative. Defenders know where the first down line is and they sit their hoping to take one the other way. You run comeback routes short of the sticks hoping your WR can break a tackle and get the first and keep turnovers down. Sometimes you just gotta take what the defense gives you. The key is not to be in 3rd and long to begin with.

No you run past the sticks, forcing the DBs to come with you and then come back. Ho do they know if the WR is going deep or coming back if the WR goes past the line of gain...?

More than that, section, consider 2020: brand new system, no OTAs, no camp, brand new line, and the poster's take is one of these blanket, black and white declarations many are fond of. I'd like to see different tweaks on the scheme too, but the number of creative play calls has been increasing and catching defenses off guard.

2020 for this team in its state of moving on from the past 8 years: work in process

Yep
Would be monumentally stupid
SLIM_ : 11/22/2020 12:36 pm : link
Jones and the Giants need to be in one system for more than a year.

The OL is young and has been pinpointed to be an underachieving unit or at least some major players have been pinpointed to be underachieving. Address that and add a big play receiver with hopefully Barkley coming back almost healthy before making any major changes.
What a BS hit piece

That's an important factor that many have not considered. Constantly changing the offensive system for a young QB is detrimental to their development. As the OL improves and that Giants add more talent at WR and TE the offense will improve and expand.

That’s available to the public that its easy for knowledgeable people to explain and show their critiques. Do some homework and some googling and you’ll see where articles like this are coming from. One guy on this thread talked about Garrett’s “schemes” being a strength. It’s actually 100% the opposite and there’s evidence that Judge has stepped in and changed what Garrett was a doing. If Garrett is the OC next year it will be because Mara won’t let Judge fire him.

Who the hell do you think is scheming these wrs like slayton to run free like that? Up into the last 2 games the giants have left so many pts on the field i cannot even count that high. But yes fire Garrett just because I say so.

Dbacks sit on on the first down markers, they wait on it. This is so off base. If you have safety help over the top, you gamble there. Trust me on this, if it was as easy as just getting to the sticks on first downs wouldn't every NFL team do it on every 3rd down? You don't see that for that very reason unless you really trust your QB and WR out there.

Hearing a lot of buzz about Tampa as a possible landing spot for Philip Rivers. As reported back in late November, he and the Chargers were likely headed to a parting of the ways.

There is a strong sense among various executives involved in ongoing NFL coaching searches that Matt Rhule is either the next coach of the Giants or staying at Baylor.

Jason La Canfora: Giants could bring back Shurmur

Jason La Canfora: If Giants make a change they will go after
Rivera has strong ties to Giants general manager Dave Gettleman and some members of that staff, and if the Giants make a coaching change it's expected they pursue men who have a proven history of winning as a head coach.

I continue to hear the Browns are deciding between Josh Allen or Sam Darnold with the top pick. Everyone I speak to is convinced they are taking a quarterback there, it's just a matter of which one. If the Giants take a quarterback second overall which is hardly a sure thing. other teams I spoke to believe Josh Rosen would merit serious consideration there.

If Andrew Norwell, the top offensive lineman on the open market, lands anywhere other than the Giants it will be considered a major upset throughout the industry. He is a player Giants GM Dave Gettleman knows well from their time together in Carolina, and the Giants are desperate to finally actually upgrade their offensive line .

If the Browns are unable to pry Trent Williams out of Washington, the other LT I hear they are interested in is Nate Solder. They've already done a lot of business with the NYG, it's worth noting

As the Jaguars sit in the AFC South cellar at 4–9, there is "growing perception" that Jacksonville's executive vice president Tom Coughlin could be the team's head coach in 2019, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

Several people involved in that DE market expect Jared Allen to end up in Denver and Justin Tuck to return to NYG.

All of this is hilarious because of how wrong he was but also troubling because he still has a job.

I cant help but think that Judge was kinda guided towards Garrett because of connections, but its clear that the Giants have told Judge that this is his team and to move pieces as he sees fit. He has that until there is no progress and right now there is a lot of it.

That's never been clear. I could see a strong suggestion by Mara that Judge should hire Garrett because:

1. He's an experience play caller with HC experience.
2. He understand the NFCE.
3. He could help Judge navigate HC duties.
4. Mara has apparently always been fond of Garrett.
5. Garrett did good with Dak.

IMO. I think the offense is definitely coming around and I see Garrett trying to utilize the skill sets of the personnel on offense. He’s also seeing what works and continues to use it until it’s stopped. With that said, there’s been a few calls inside the Redzone that I was not good with. Bringing in the FB on short yardage and handing him the ball, which got stuffed. The jet sweeps to Engram or reverses inside the Redzone.....not going to succeed given the short field defenses have to cover. Anyway, you can see the offense gaining more confidence and with an improved Oline, will only get better IMO. Lastly, as others already mentioned, probably not a very good idea to give DJ his third OC and offensive scheme in last three years. Talk about stunting development.

Unfair to Garrett
Jeffrey : 11/23/2020 8:14 am : link
No one can be excited with the offense this year and some of that has to be on Garrett. However he lost his best offensive weapon in Game 2, a starting LT before the season began, Shepard was out for several weeks and Andrew Thomas came in anything but ready for the NFL. He inherited an overrated Hernandez, a center who never played the position before, a suddenly aging RG and was forced to use a journeyman RT. The TE free agents have done nothing to fill a void. Did Jones regress because of Garrett, or is he simply not as good as some hoped? It took some time but the OC has adapted. Like some of the diversity we are starting to see in the offensive gameplan, but you can only do so much when the line cannot protect the QB.
He is saying it because of the Garret ties

likely a few times. I certainly would expect he talked to Garrett, who is his direct employee, before the whole DD thing. I believe Garrett has been in the loop.

In general Garrett probably recommended Colombo and it didn't work out, a fact that Garrett probably acknowledges too. I know I have been in positions where I had an employee who wasn't working out, and my boss wanted to do something else. Eventually you give in because it just isn't worth the effort.
