I’m on the fence personally but he’s got the longevity and stats.

When I think of the NFL over the last 15 years he never enters my mind. Arbitrary reasoning but his career is technically pretty forgettable.
I, personally, hope he never wins

Yes. I was a little surprised. He never described Eli that way. Eli has two Super Bowl MVPs

I'd go yes.

But it's a healthy debate either way.

I thought Rivers was shot after last year. So I'm a bit surprised at his play so far. It isn't great, but it's been good enough with that excellent D.

Eli has a better postseason career, but Rivers has a better regular season career. Possibly better than Roethlisberger too.

Rivers is still very good if you can protect him. That's the problem, but Colts have a very good offensive line, but a team with a fierce pass rush in the playoffs and they are cooked.

I took them 25-1 preseason. Rivers was the missing piece. He only looked poor his last couple years with Chargers because they couldn't give him the protection he needed with a mediocre line that was always banged up. Colts don't have that problem.

I really don't understand people's odd obsession with mentioning Rivers' large family all the time.

I'm not offended and couldn't give a fuck less about Rivers. Is having a family that big... bad or something to some people? What's so funny about someone having a ton of kids that it's worth mentioning all the time? We know he has a big family.

My best friend growing up had 11 brothers and sisters total, and going over to that house was such a great time. I was never bored!

Yeah, a really strange obsession. He has a large family with his wife, of all things. They all love each other. He has the money to send them all through whatever school they want and get into and is not likely to be in court fighting child support decisions.

or for not yet winning a Super Bowl (as if QBs win them single-hadedly without team support) comes from insecure Giants' fans who feel they have to deride Rivers, lest he be considered better than Eli.

Here's a crazy question. Why can't Eli and Rivers BOTH be considered HOF QBs?

And why can't some Giants fans be satisfied that Eli has 2 SB rings even if Rivers has been the better regular season QB?

Most believe that Eli, Big Ben and Rivers will all be in the HOF some day. And although there is no way to prove it, I think the Giants would have won the same two SBs, no matter which of those 3 QBs they had chosen. So to me, it doesn't really matter how those QBs are ranked.

Rivers should be in. Eli will get in. Each on their own merits and not compared to one another when the decision is made.

... and I don’t think it’s particularly close.

5th all time passing, 6th all time in passing TDs, 8 time
Pro bowler, 130 wins, 33 comeback wins

Subjectively, I hate Rivers. As a UNC alum, I’ve been rooting against him for 20 years. I hate his throwing motion, his trash talking, etc etc

Objectively, he’s had a long, productive winning career. The NFL Hall of Fame does not have the high barriers that MLB does. Rivers will be enshrined.

Mike Glennon .... gross.

Admittedly, Tarheel QBs don’t have much to hold a candle to NC State. I’ve been praying Trubisky does something but good lord. I think TJ Yates has most of the UNC passing records in the NFL which is scary.

But we have Lawrence Taylor and that’s all that matters. 😊

It’s ironic, when we lived in NY, I always liked the heels because of LT, and Kenny Smith ... but when we moved to the Triangle in ‘93, there weren’t many houses available in Chapel Hill and the realtors were pointing all us Yankees to Cary ... my wife got a job at State and with it came discount tix.

Yes, I'm obsessed with Rivers & his large family. I spend hours upon hours upon hours thinking of how he handles having so many children. Jesus, lighten up. It was a slight crack at how many kids he has. It wasn't an attack of his character.

Yeah, Ben's 30 TD, 24 INT ratio is a sure fire stud muffin for playoff competition. What is this? He's been held up by elite defense since he's got there. He's been a very fine QB but lets hit the breaks.

Is completely fine to admit Eli has been better than both in the playoffs. Eli also struggled at times in the regular season, all while given underwhelming rosters for him. No HOF guys like Gates or Tomlinson or consistently top ten defenses like Ben.

All three will be HOFers.

Here are some other HoF QBs playoff TD/INTs:

Marino was 32/24.
Aikman was 23/17.
Favre was 43/30.
Jim Kelly was 21/.
Steve Young was 20/13.

Point is Roethlisberger isn't that bad versus others at the position...
The HOF is devalued for me
Go Terps : 11/23/2020 6:22 pm : link
It's a subjective thing that's become too inclusive, and the case for a player is usually relativistic instead of on merit.

I wouldn't put any of Eli, Rivers, or Roethlisberger in the HOF. To me that's the same as saying they belong in a room with Montana, Unitas, and Brady.

And they don't.
Roethlisberger absolutely belongs
Oscar : 11/23/2020 6:29 pm : link
Rivers frankly has a better case than Eli, but two Super Bowls and two SB MVPs will get Eli over the hump. All three get in I think, though Ben is the only complete lock.

Eli has an advantage in that his class will be pretty thin. Might actually have his best chance on the first ballot. After that he’s going to be up against Brees, Rivers, Brady, eventually Ben, Rodgers.

Totally agree. Roeth is a cold stone lock. Playing in the AFC, dealing with Brady and Manning, and still hooking two SBs (with a 3rd appearance) is very impressive. He's a great, great player - IMV.
The irony of the three choices in 2004
Milton : 11/23/2020 7:22 pm : link
Giants gave up a lot to get Eli.
They could've stayed put and kept Rivers.
They could've traded back (with Cleveland I think) and landed Roethlisberger plus an additional 2nd round pick.

I don't care that Roethlisberger has had the best career statistically speaking and in terms of team success, but he's a creep and I wouldn't've enjoyed rooting for him. I'm glad he was not a Giant (although I think he would've gotten more out of Shockey than Eli managed).

As for Rivers vs Eli. Impossible to predict how different it would've been. The 2007 and 2011 seasons were magical years that came out of nowhere and required just the right amount of good and (seemingly) bad luck, not your typically built Super Bowl teams like the 1986 and 1990 teams. So it's not as simple as replacing one QB with another. The Giants may have had an overall better won-loss record with more visits to the playoffs, but no Super Bowl trophies or even Super Bowl appearances to show for it.
I think all are HOFers.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 11/23/2020 7:24 pm : link
But that's me. I would rank them, in terms of likelihood, 1) The Rapist, 2) Eli, & 3) Rivers.
