What we have vs what we need

frankmihs : 11/22/2020 9:26 pm
I think we can all agree that we are missing several quality game-changing players. In looking at next year's draft and potential free agents market you have to look at our salary cap situation. By cutting tate zeitler, pull ey we will have freed up a good amount of money on top of the fact that we will probably ask our left tackle to take a pay cut. We should be able to get to around $50 million under the cat what we need is several quality players, one number one receiver, one number two corner, one top edge rusher. I would like to resign Tomlinson and Williams for about 28 mil total. I'm wondering if we have our number two corner already on the roster between yadiom, Lewis and Beal. They have all flashed and seem competent in their assignments period that leaves us with the need of a true edge rusher which I think we need to get in free agency. Maybe go after someone like Bud Dupree.

Thoughts?
The Giants have to be careful here.

This team reminds me of the 2004 Giants - a tough, gritty team short on horsepower.

If you'll recall, the 2005 offseason was Plax/McKenzie/Pierce, and a contender was born.

IMO, the Giants need a #1 WR, a 2-way TE and a stud DE. If they can get all 3 of those pieces and find parts that fit the team they currently have, they will be really good. But this is a tough, workmanlike team. Gotta bring the right types of guys in.
I also feel that edge rusher has to be found in FA
George from PA : 11/22/2020 10:00 pm : link
A Top WR can be had in either the draft or FA.....no prima dona.

Corners must come from draft.

Hopefully Get Barkley, Carter and others back to new.

straighten out coaching staff....

Cap is manageable

I think you have it backwards. Top edges don’t make FA and the guys that do are always seriously overpaid. On the flip side you can get solid second corners that are older. We def need 1 or the other, but the way the defense is constructed I don’t think we need both to be really good defensively. Team desperately needs another WR. Need another ILB that can cover middle of field, but if Love progresses like he has and McKinney is the goods you’ll see a lot of Peppers in that role.
What will the cap be?
5BowlsSoon : 11/22/2020 10:27 pm : link
With no fans buying tickets, I don’t see how the cap doesn’t go down considerably.
They need to hit
darren in pdx : 11/22/2020 10:29 pm : link
on a good pass rusher in the draft. They are too expensive when they do hit FA. Having a really good one on a cheap rookie deal will be key.
I believe the nfl and NFL's agreed not to drop cap
George from PA : 11/22/2020 10:48 pm : link
But keep it flat....so there wouldn't be a massive amount of cuts....off set in later years.

Yes....Edge FA usually are not available but I am talking just for this coming year and the draft does not have that guy....corners, wrs, etc...yes...

Hoping with flat cap...a bud Dupree type does break loose
I've messed around on Over the Cap a bit
Breeze_94 : 11/22/2020 11:41 pm : link
with the 175 mil cap, Giants have about 15.5 mil in space but I believe that number will be closer to 22 mil with the rollover.

Cut Tate, Solder, Core, Mayo and they have about 38 mil in space.

Take out 4 mil for Gano so they'd have about 34 mil.

They may have a decision to make on Zeitler- either get him to take a paycut (maybe more likely given the situation next year) or cut him and save 12mil

Breeze_94 : 11/22/2020 11:43 pm : link
And just to add to that, I'd like to see the Giants bring back both LW and Dalvin and sign a WR

My #1 target in FA: Allen Robinson. This would give DJ his Plax.
The need a game changer on D
JoeyBigBlue : 11/22/2020 11:44 pm : link
An impact Edge Rusher or a ball hawk FS. With Barkley coming back we should be OK on O. But a game changer on D would really elevate us.

nothing has changed. They still need an ER, ILB and #2 CB on defense. Yiadom has improved in the last couple games, so see where he ends up by the end of the year, which may lessen the need for an early round CB(but I doubt it), McKinney should help at safety along with Ryan(keep him if possible) and Peppers.

On offense, need a #1 WR, and a real TE and possibly more interior line help - OG/C. Barkley should be back so RB instantly improves, but need a #2 RB - a bulldozer type.

You want to spend 28 million on Williams & Tomlinson for what just average defensive linemen. Look at this roster most of our starting players on offense and defense are not in this teams future plans realistically. We’re not building for the future they are praying a 3-7, win team with journey men type veteran players can produce a colossal miracle.

Not trying to argue ... but, I can never ever see the cap going down. It will always go up - "cost of living" (I know that sounds ridiculous when we are talking about multi-million dollar salaries) raises.

When was the last time the cap ever went down?
I think we are closer than most people think.

We just have a really young team that needs more experience playing together.

Edge rusher (likes most others have said), another talented LB, a WR, and even another OL.

I like the progress that the OL is making and the potential it has ... but, I want the best OL in the league. That will make EVERYBODY else on the offense look and play better.
One or two threads per day identifying the same future needs and

The same cuts that could be made is getting boring. Why don’t you wait until the end of the season when the Giants figure out what they have before starting another thread about this?

Are you afraid the Giants will miss out on something between now and the end of the year because they didn’t have your input? The trade deadline has passed.

This we got dummies saying this is a 3-7 team wah wah wah. Now if they finish 3-3 they went 5-3 over the back half of the season. A young team getting better with a new inspiring head coach. Not an old team who started out hot and then injuries piled up and limped into playoffs. Now if we don't go 3-3 I'll get some of the whining, but we just won back to back games that really weren't all that close.

Of course a better solution would be for you to not participate in (or even open) threads that you find boring, redundant or don't interest you.

Remember, not everyone is on BBI every day and those who are may not have had time to participate in a similar thread.
Different take
Reale01 : 11/23/2020 2:08 pm : link
Do without edge rusher. Our pass rush has been OK and the cost is too much. Focus on strong defense and OL. Add a playmaker at WR.

Sign the DTs
Get a #1 FA receiver and draft 1
Draft a CB
Get FA ILB
Fortify OL with a FA veteran and draft 1

Summary
Premium picks: CB, WR, LB/OL
Premium FA: WR,
Tier 2 FA: ILB/OL
Keep: Both DTs
frank - couple things from your OP...
LBH15 : 11/23/2020 2:28 pm : link
As you mentioned, the shopping list this offseason really needs to center around Wide Receivers, Corners and Edge Rushers.

to me a reasonable strategy would be to add two WRs & two CBs. Target one each from free agency and one each from first few pick (Day 1 or Day 2). This brings experience and hopefully developing youth to each unit.

Value at Edge Rusher in free agency is a tough proposition so would hope there is somebody there on Day 1 or Day 2 of draft that works. If there is a clear target in free agency at Edge then I would be letting Leonard Williams walk so as to properly manage cap $/DL roster.

Also imv, Solder is no longer needed although would look for another swing tackle in free agency (hopefully a tad better than Fleming). And nobody I have seen on roster is reliable enough at #2 corner, including Beal.
I think we need to continue to...
EricJ : 11/23/2020 2:35 pm : link
build our lines. On defense, we need to make sure we can stop the run and rush the passer. On offense, we need to run block and protect Jones.

I would focus all of our energy here. Do I want another WR and a CB? Sure... but if I had one dollar so spend then I am spending that money on the lines
