Was it to hedge against Wentz getting hurt? Was it for gadget plays running the ball?
I watched Philly/CLE yesterday and I saw his sporadic use. Honestly it didn't help them at all.
Plus do they think he's really a replacement? Can he pass like Wentz was capable of before he became a hot mess?
He was a late 2nd rounder, so its not like they burned huge capitol, but I want my 2nd rounder doing more than a few snaps per game.
Also, Philly still sucks balls.
They can't keep going with Wentz long term. I'd trade him.
Yeah those 3 from Philly haven't gotten the accolades... they only combined for 10 all pro teams and 15 pro bowls
Holding the ball so long in the end zone and taking the sack for a Cleveland safety yesterday was a bit shocking. Basically a play a rookie QB in his first game would do.
They may not bench him, but it has to be on their minds.

Doesn't his salary make him "untradeable?" He's making top QB money... and the cap might shrink next year...
It's worse than that because they typically keep Wentz on the field (at least in the games I saw) which means they're playing 10v11 with the D knowing it's a run.

not really sure what Pederson is doing (and I'm good with that) but I think him being there is to hedge against injury and possibly take the job one day.

They can't trade him or cut him this offseason. His new contract begins next year. If they did move him they would absorb a $59 million dollar cap hit. The Eagles are already projected to be over $70 million over next years cap so there is no way they can get rid of Wentz this offseason.
Hey Vernon really paid off for the Giants after all..

They won because they had a top OL, which was very underrated. Peters-Kelce-Johnson trio was every bit as good as the Dallas trio, but didn't get the accolades.

Eh, relative to the hype of the Dallas trio and the Dallas OL in general? The PHI OL was arguably the best in the NFL for several years, including their SB season, yet the Dallas OL was often portrayed as being significantly better.

No because the Eagles would be on the hook for the SB and some other prorated money. His base salaries and future roster/workout bonuses would be payable by the acquiring team and those wouldn't be crippling, especially if they can "fix" him and get him playing at a top level again.
And some of these failed plays have been huge momentum killers for them. I feel like I've seen them get stuffed on the Hurts plays only to follow them up with a turnover or failed conversion on 3rd and long on multiple occasions this season. Would drive me crazy if I was an Eagles fan.

He'll be fired in 2 season.
On that Brian Billick career trajectory.
Not nearly the athlete and runner Lamar is.
In the first half Sanders had 5.7 yards per carry. 11 rushes for 63 yards.
They handed him the ball 5 mores times in the game. So weird, especially considering the weather.
His speed isn't scaring anyone at the pro level and his arm is mediocre. Throw in average decision making, which existed at Alabama, and you have the absolute definition of a project...at best.
Every play I have seen Hurts participate in this year has been a loss or no gain.....and as pointed out above...a momentum crusher.
You rise with your QB and you fall with your QB. Right now Pederson is falling fast!
He’s clearly pressing and trying to do way too much. Case in point, was the pick six yesterday in Cleveland. Just a horrible decision because Wentz just wouldn’t take the sack. He was desperate to make a play. That’s been a pattern for most of this year.
Meanwhile, as mentioned above, the OL is struggling and the skill position players have been crushed by injuries the last two years. So they can’t find any rhythm or identity.
Let’s be honest here. Wentz willed that team to the playoffs last year. He made chicken salad out of a big bag of excrement. It was pretty amazing in hindsight...
But he just can’t sustain that without serious upgrades and health. Eventually you are going to run out of mayonnaise.
It really highlights how difficult it is to be effective in this league with a poor OL - something we can relate to!
Hopefully it takes the eggles as long as it took us to rebuild their OL.
That would be around 2029-2030!
You’re leaving out all pro Brandon Brooks
Isn't that true with every QB? The problem is he doesn't threaten D's with his arm and they compound it by keeping Wentz in and essentially removing a receiving target. So even if the D doesn't play 9 in the box, the S is going to shade to the WR/TE.
He was projected to be a 2nd rounder. His style of running is very different as he is a tough dude to bring down.
Don’t be shocked if he turns out to be very good.

No way Hurts becomes very good. He's a college QB. Shit Lamar is struggling right now because of some of his limitations and Hurts isn't nearly on his level as an athlete or even a passer. At least Lamar can make you pay down the middle of the field.
He really does look awful. People keep saying that his knee injury a few years ago ruined him but the knee injury doesn't explain why he makes terrible decisions. Also his accuracy is nowhere near what it was during their SB season.
I think a change of scenery is desperately needed but luckily for us they can't get rid of him for at least one more season.
I think Wentz can turn it around if he goes to a team with a QB guru in place such as KC(obviously not happening), Vegas, New Orleans, or Tampa Bay.

Agree. Vernon was killing Jason Peters yesterday. He and Kelce are likely gone, may not even last rest of the season. Wentz is taking a beating and it's affecting his play.

Very good point. And it isn't just Wentz. It makes the entire offense looks bad. You would think he had no skill players on offense.
but we are the team that wasted premium picks on Kyle Lauletta & Davis Webb in recent years.
Not quite the same thing. Not to defend Reese or Gettleman, but those picks were fliers on Eli replacements.
He has a ring (even if he didn't take them over the hump himself). His career has been vastly superior to RG3 - they don't belong in the same sentence.
Joe Flacco might be a better comparison.
To me, he just looks defeated out there. As a Giants fan, I'm delighted he's costing them $128 million.
That's not a great reason to blow a 2nd round pick.

Their WRs are like our OL: lots of investment in the position group but terrible results:
Drafted since 2015
Reagor - 1st
Hightower - 5th
Watkins - 6th
Arcega-Whiteside - 2nd
Goedert (TE) - 2nd
Hollins - 4th
Gibson - 5th
Agholor - 1st
Free Agents
Jeffery
D Jackson
G Tate (traded, then let walk after 1/2 season)
Torrey Smith

I said similar earlier (above).
To me, Wentz is trying so hard to make it happen. But he just can't dial it back to the point where he's takes a loss (sack, incompletion) to live for another down. He is determined to find the winning play.
He's like the opposite of Alex Smith when he was "Check Down Alex". Smith would rarely try any plays down field and go with the old reliable check down...

True. I've read that Peterson is trying to get him to play safer, but it seems it's just resulted in throwing his rhythm off even further. Ironically enough, his pick-6 yesterday resulted from actually holding back from taking a deeper shot and trying to check down.

I liked Hurts in the draft, but if Philly drafted him to be Taysem Hill they made a big mistake. If they drafted him to run an offense around a mobile QB, they were smart to draft him.
Job one is to look in the mirror and admit Wentz has to go.

Went tends to get hurt. They wanted a backup with some talent. Easy.
That's not a great reason to blow a 2nd round pick.
I obviously don’t know how good Hurts can be or whether he was a worthy second rounder or lower, but I can understand why they needed to protect themselves against the inevitable Wentz injury/season-ended. I just have no idea what QB they should have taken and where.
Wentz was heading for the MVP in 2017. He was #1 in the league in QBR with 33TDs /7INTs /7.7 YPA through 13 games before the injury in LA. Definitely living up to his draft billing.
So there were reasons to be bullish.
They'd be much better off not killing Wentz's rhythm and letting Hurts learn in a backup role. What they're doing now makes no sense.
