Was it to hedge against Wentz getting hurt? Was it for gadget plays running the ball?
I watched Philly/CLE yesterday and I saw his sporadic use. Honestly it didn't help them at all.
Plus do they think he's really a replacement? Can he pass like Wentz was capable of before he became a hot mess?
He was a late 2nd rounder, so its not like they burned huge capitol, but I want my 2nd rounder doing more than a few snaps per game.
Also, Philly still sucks balls.
but we are the team that wasted premium picks on Kyle Lauletta & Davis Webb in recent years.
Not quite the same thing. Not to defend Reese or Gettleman, but those picks were fliers on Eli replacements.
He has a ring (even if he didn't take them over the hump himself). His career has been vastly superior to RG3 - they don't belong in the same sentence.
Joe Flacco might be a better comparison.
To me, he just looks defeated out there. As a Giants fan, I'm delighted he's costing them $128 million.
That's not a great reason to blow a 2nd round pick.

Their WRs are like our OL: lots of investment in the position group but terrible results:
Drafted since 2015
Reagor - 1st
Hightower - 5th
Watkins - 6th
Arcega-Whiteside - 2nd
Goedert (TE) - 2nd
Hollins - 4th
Gibson - 5th
Agholor - 1st
Free Agents
Jeffery
D Jackson
G Tate (traded, then let walk after 1/2 season)
Torrey Smith

I said similar earlier (above).
To me, Wentz is trying so hard to make it happen. But he just can't dial it back to the point where he's takes a loss (sack, incompletion) to live for another down. He is determined to find the winning play.
He's like the opposite of Alex Smith when he was "Check Down Alex". Smith would rarely try any plays down field and go with the old reliable check down...

True. I've read that Peterson is trying to get him to play safer, but it seems it's just resulted in throwing his rhythm off even further. Ironically enough, his pick-6 yesterday resulted from actually holding back from taking a deeper shot and trying to check down.
He’s clearly pressing and trying to do way too much. Case in point, was the pick a couple weeks ago against Tampa. Just a horrible decision because Wentz just wouldn’t take the sack. He was desperate to make a play. That’s been a pattern for most of this year.
Meanwhile, as mentioned above, the OL is struggling and the skill position players have been crushed by injuries the last two years. So they can’t find any rhythm or identity.
I liked Hurts in the draft, but if Philly drafted him to be Taysem Hill they made a big mistake. If they drafted him to run an offense around a mobile QB, they were smart to draft him.
Job one is to look in the mirror and admit Wentz has to go.
Quote:
Went tends to get hurt. They wanted a backup with some talent. Easy.
That's not a great reason to blow a 2nd round pick.
I obviously don’t know how good Hurts can be or whether he was a worthy second rounder or lower, but I can understand why they needed to protect themselves against the inevitable Wentz injury/season-ended. I just have no idea what QB they should have taken and where.
Wentz was heading for the MVP in 2017. He was #1 in the league in QBR with 33TDs /7INTs /7.7 YPA through 13 games before the injury in LA. Definitely living up to his draft billing.
So there were reasons to be bullish.
They'd be much better off not killing Wentz's rhythm and letting Hurts learn in a backup role. What they're doing now makes no sense.
