Not sure if this was already posted.

He did a decent job...
EricJ : 11/23/2020 5:47 pm : link
especially since many here wanted us to tank the season just prior to Chase's draft so we could select him.
I expected A LOT more from Young this year
Ben in Tampa : 11/23/2020 5:47 pm : link
It’s a tough year to be a rookie in the NFL, maybe he’ll be the game wrecker he was thought to be in 2021.

Still, for the second overall pick, he’s been just average. 20 tackles and 2 sacks is.... ok.

Leonard Williams has 17 tackles and 5 sacks, for reference.
Young
Toth029 : 11/23/2020 5:52 pm : link
Has 4 QB hits on the year. Crazy low for 9 games on the year.

Leonard Williams has 16!

Young has always disappeared
Stan in LA : 11/23/2020 6:13 pm : link
Against good competition. Nothing new this year.
I heard CY has an injury...
Dan in the Springs : 11/23/2020 6:32 pm : link
Was apparently much more disruptive earlier and slowed now because he's a bit hobbled.

A WFT fan told me this, no idea if true.
Two questions for those who analyze the O-line :
CT Charlie : 11/23/2020 6:46 pm : link
1) Has Daniel Jones been staying closer to the line of scrimmage lately? Earlier in the season, it seemed that when Andrew Thomas pushed guys outside and deep, they'd end up meeting DJ. In this clip, Young ends up safely behind DJ.

2) If DJ is staying closer, is it because the interior of the line is doing a better job or because DJ is showing more discipline in not retreating?

I think it was a combination of the interior line letting runners free through the a and b gaps and the running backs not knowing who to pick up. So DJ would try to get deep so that he had space to avoid free rushers. Now that the interior is much more cohesive, he feels more comfortable stepping up.
That technique looks pretty good

to me...Thomas’ arm length really shows during these clips

Williams is also an interior or 3/4 DE and he’s killing the run this year. It’s apples and oranges but Williams is playing very well. He’s also a cagey in his prime vet. Young is a child. I’d love to have him even if he doesn’t meet expectations. He’s still a nice piece.
He had a groin injury early in the year
GManinDC : 11/23/2020 9:00 pm : link
and hasn't been the same since..
There’s been a lot said that AT was dominant in college because
Spider56 : 11/24/2020 9:01 am : link
of strength and superior athletic ability vs competition, and it takes time to develop technique needed to be successful in the pros. I’m thinking that applies to Mr Young too ... Unless your name is Watt or Bosa, it does take time.

Agreed. Lets hope 2 years from now Thomas still handles him as well as he did in this clip.
So far it appears Chase Young
arniefez : 11/24/2020 9:57 am : link
has elite football measurables but isn't an elite football player. He rarely beats the blocker in front of him and no one will confuse his motor with Lawrence Taylor's. So far it's been a relief that he has not been close to the one man game wrecker he was hyped to be. I don't buy that's due to an injury. He's playing on an excellent line, teams are not scheming to stop him because they can't afford to with so many other weapons around him and he still isn't anything special. So far, so good for Giant fans.

Sy said the same. I believe Young suffered a soft tissue (groin?) issue week 2 and according to Sy he was much more explosive the first week+ (very limited SS obviously) than he's been since.
Young is almost too good to fail
djm : 11/24/2020 11:04 am : link
he's so explosive and has great size and length. At the very worst he will be a solid starting edge player. He's probably going to be much better.

Sy has specifically said that the injury has absolutely impacted Young's play. Before the injury, Young was playing very well.

Whether you accept that or not, is up to you. But the injury was material.
remember that one one year

Strahan didn't post monster numbers but still gutted it out through injury but we were told by certain people here that $trahan was dogging it?

had to do it

you're still one of my faves big guy.
I rewatched the Philly game to just watch Thomas play
Jim in Forest Hills : 11/24/2020 11:59 am : link
I think he's got the talent, footwork, strength to be really good.

He has the ability to recover even when he gets off balance because he has good feet.

What I dislike is that his man often disengages easily and eventually makes the play on the ball. He just sort of loses his aggressiveness after he has driven his guy a few yards back in the run game. He doesn't have that Shane Lemiuex "I want to bury you" kind of mindset.

SY's forgotten more about football today than I'll know in my whole life. But I do have eyes and I've watched every Washington game this year. I'm not saying Young is or will be a bust. But he's also not a game wrecker. He wasn't before he got hurt and he isn't now. He rarely if at all beats the man in front of him and he gives up on plays quite often. They play a lot of games with him and twist him a lot and when he gets some space to move away from the man in front of him he's fast and effective but teams will take that away the more they see it. I stand by what I said. As a Giant fan his play is so far so good. Maybe he'll get a lot better. I hope not.
Hoping Chase Young has a monster game on Thur and
LBH15 : 11/24/2020 1:18 pm : link
reminds the Dallas QBs who he is.

I liked Thomas at 4 overall so maybe I am biased, but I agree he has all the tools to be a very good LT, even a pro bowl or all pro level player.

But asking him to have a Lemieux type agressiveness when playing on the edge is a bit much. There's more ballet dancing and less bearish mauling for any edge player, compared to inside, and anyway if you study Thomas in the run game he's pretty darn to the whistle agressive, IMO.

NEEDS to get stronger (he's 21, he will) and use his hands and feet better. But his tools are all there.

Dan Shonka (sp?) of Ourlads spoke about him on Patti Traina's podcast recently, and he reconfirmed something we'd heard before.

In speaking broadly with many NFL OL coaches, Thomas was the aggregate #1 choice on their draft boards, over Wirfs who was #2, at over 60% of the folks Shonka spoke with.

Reading tea leaves, it may be that Thomas's struggles, as much or more than Gates being taught differently than JJ wanted, were reasons leading to JJ's disapproval of Colombo and hire of DD.
