Coaching changes in the off-season

CMicks3110 : 11/24/2020 7:03 am
I think our coaching staff has done an excellent job this year. But every unit from players to executives to coaches can always be improved.

It seems there there are about 5 teams that could terminate their head coaches after the season: Jets, Texans, Jaguars,
Lions, Falcons, with the latter two no given.

Any interesting coaches that stand out on those teams:

Jaguars: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Jacksonville_Jaguars_season

jets: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_New_York_Jets_season

Texans: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Houston_Texans_season

Lions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Detroit_Lions_season

Falcons: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Atlanta_Falcons_season

As I mentioned in another thread,

I think Gase is worse than Kotite was and that’s nearly impossible to fathom
If they lose Patrick Graham to HC hiring,
section125 : 11/24/2020 7:07 am : link
Matt Patricia as DC would be interesting.
The Patricia connection with Judge makes a ton of sense.

Dan Quinn didn't do a good job in Atlanta but as a DC he's a guy that is intriguing.
I don't see Graham leaving

too few openings, and one good season as a coordinator. I could see Garrett leaving, but I feel like his hire was probably predicated on at least 2 years given they want continuity with Jones.

You can't possibly belieev that Garrett would pass up a HC slot to spend another year with Jones

Do we know whether Garrett wants ANOTHER HC job with all its headaches? Is it not possible/probable, that his life is much easier now and he’s enjoying being just an OC?

Unknown '56, but $3-$5 million per as HC vs $300k as OC is a big difference and I'm sure he loved being a HC. Yes the OC is less hectic and demanding of time.

Have to believe Garrett will be sought after. I think Eric Bieniemy will be the #1 sought after coach. Garrett probably right behind.
Of course Garrett would leave for a HC job

Frankly I think the only place he might get an offer is Dallas, and I don’t think that’s impossible based on how things are going.

You could be right
Dan Quinn
Mark in ATL : 11/24/2020 8:00 am : link
Quinn runs a 4-3 defense and for the last couple of years his defense played better when he wasn’t as involved. Ask DB coach Henderson (fired by Quinn) how good a fit he would be.

A co-ordinator only makes $300G! I had no idea.
Did I miss something?
giants#1 : 11/24/2020 8:42 am : link
I guess there's still 6 games left, but the Giants offense is bottom 5 in the league. Why are teams going to be lining up for Garrett? It's not like he was highly sought after this past offseason.

On the other hand, most feel this Giants D is playing well above it's talent level. That would imply Graham is doing a very good job putting players in a position to succeed. At this point, I fully expect Graham to get more HC interviews than JG.

This is the difference between some orgs and ours
Zeke's Alibi : 11/24/2020 8:43 am : link
If it was about money, you’d have a handful of teams bust out the checkbook to stay. We also have a massive coaching staff now, so unless we want to cut coaches we aren’t paying coordinators big bucks. Judge seems like he values a large coaching staff over high priced coordinators
Jason makes a whole lot more than $300K
Arkbach : 11/24/2020 8:45 am : link
Base OC salaries I expect to be $1M with guys with better resumes well over that. Same with DCs. I thought this year for the first time that I can think of the Giants spent big money on the staff. I always felt they hired assistants on the cheap, but not this year.

I spent work related time in Houston a few years ago and was amazed at how much the locals hate the Cowboys ... If they hire the right GM, I could see them going after JG to try and stick it to Jerrah and the boys.
Good question - CMicks
Lurker : 11/24/2020 8:56 am : link
Any senior manager in any industry worth their salt asks themselves this question perpetually. You always need to be thinking about several candidates that you would bring in the replace your top management performers. Why? Life happens. They can be attracted to other positions or get hit by a train. I'm sure the Giants front office is looking down the road. Judge likely is too.

And for those who will say Mara and DG can't see past their noses - that may be but - you have to operate looking down the road. Doesn't mean your replacements will pan out but - you have to have a plan.

How does hiring a mediocre (at best) head coach "stick it to Jerrah and the boys"?

Gase will be gone minutes after the final game. I can't imagine Patricia gets retained. Falcons and Texans need a HC. Bears may decide Nagy isn't the guy. I don't think McCarthy is on the hotseat at all- the injury situation there was horrendous and McCarthy as kept it together.

Garrett may be a candidate for the NY Trevors.

Graham will certainly be a candidate somewhere.

Pick a current or former Patriot or Saban guy for their replacement if either leaves.

Graham

I hope that the Giants do not lose Graham
But if they do, will the Giants get two (3rd) picks?
As Mentioned Just Above
Trainmaster : 11/24/2020 10:34 am : link
Bears HC Nagy and their GM will likely get canned if the Bears don’t make the playoffs.

So I see 6 potential HC openings at least.
It's Doubtful the Giants Will Lose Either Coordinator...
Jim in Tampa : 11/24/2020 10:44 am : link
Unless the Giants go on an unexpected winning streak and advance in the playoffs.

Teams seldom hire coordinators from losing programs as their new HC.

American holiday.

But this thread is nothing more than wholly unfounded speculation.

Until we actually at least hear rumors of any of our coaches leaving, we have zero idea if any of our current staff needs replacing. And this team being AT BEST a 7-9 club, short of a playoff miracle the Giants' various ACs and coordinators are not going to be in high demand, probably not even in low demand.

Maybe DD is merely a stop gap for the OL, and JJ will need to find another OL AC. I wonder how much input Garrett will want on that decision, not much I suspect.

JJ won't look to replace Garrett, I'm willing to bet on that and give 2:1 odds. I'm wouldn't bet JJ has sole authority even to fire Garrett if he wanted to, given Garrett's previous Giants' connections.

Ive never understood why the success of a person as a coordinator makes that much difference when considering whether the guy can be a head coach. Is it is feather in their cap that they were good/great as a coordinator? Of course it is. But for me, a head coach should be a CEO type, able to hire the right coordinators/assistants, people you can rely on to do the job, then work with the GM to get the right type of players on the team, and basically "run things" on game day. Coaches calling plays always drives me nuts: thats what you hired your O and D coordinators to do, not your role anymore!

I think some of this is what the Giants saw in Judge, and he was not a coordinator. Look at the number of guys who were good to great coordinators who flamed out when doing the top job; take a special kind of person to fit that roll, and just because you can create a great offense or defense doesn't mean that you can fill all those other roles.

NOT saying that Graham wouldn't be a good selection, but if he is, it wont be because he put together a great defense only. He wont be running just a defense, he will be running a team; big difference.
Based on the interviews you see with Patrick graham

Jay on the Island : 11/26/2020 3:28 pm : link
Which I think is more likely than some fans think, I want nothing to do with Patricia as a replacement. I was never impressed by Patricia in NE as I think he received way too much credit which belonged to Belichick. I would prefer that the Giants hire a young coach rather than a retread.

Quinn runs 4-3 defense so I don’t think that he would be a good option as the Giants don’t have the personnel. It’s very difficult to find 4-3 DE’s and the Giants don’t have any on the roster.
