Ryan Connelly

He has 2 tackles for the Vikings this year. Maybe the Giants were not as stupid as some thought.
I mean they still wasted a draft pick on him

how much playing time he's had up to this point because we're 10 games into the season. This does not bode well for him at all. I was high on him as a Giant and wish nothing but the best for him.

A 5th rounder.
He was signed as a backup LB
giants#1 : 11/24/2020 10:51 am : link
The only thing the tackle total shows is that the Vikings starters have remained healthy.
Isn't he mostly playing on specials?
freddie wilson : 11/24/2020 10:54 am : link
The thing is other than mlb I don't know where he would play and kendricks hasn't missed time. So I wouldn't put much weight on low tackle numbers.

So Who Are You Criticizing?
Samiam : 11/24/2020 10:57 am : link
Are you criticizing the Giants for letting go a 5th round pick who looked good in his brief appearances before he suffered a severe injury? Or, are you criticizing the Vikings for picking up someone who is coming off a serious injury and is used as a backup?
A 5th rounder who tore up his knee - now has 2 whole tackles

while he hit everything that moved, in addition to stout technique, his major assets were quickly reading what was happening, and moving to the ball with no wasted motion. These abilities largely compensated for a lack of great speed and range, and will play better in some defenses than others. I would guess the Giants decided that in theirs speed and range were more important.

You can blame DG for picking a 5th rounder
giants#1 : 11/24/2020 11:45 am : link
that was easily replaced the next season, but I'm pretty sure it was PG/JJ that decided to cut Connelly in favor of keeping Downs/Crowder/etc because they liked those guys better and/or felt they were better fits for this D.

The peanut gallery on BBI doesn't give shit to the Giants staff. They give shit to the posters on BBI that think the Giants staff doesn't deserve it.
The real issue is not understanding his injury
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/24/2020 11:45 am : link
There shouldn't have been any crying about this. If you understood the nature of his injury, you would have known to expect he was going to be a non-factor for this year, and that it might have tanked his career. That still remains to be seen.

It's almost as unbelievable as fans calling the Giants smart when they cut those 5th rounders and other teams pick them up as backups.
It is fair to say that a lot of posters were shocked and dismayed when
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 11/24/2020 11:51 am : link
He was cut (I was among the shocked). That said, there was also a lot of heated comments about how that was a huge mistake and the Giants had no idea what they were doing. So far, Connoly’s year has not indicated that it was a huge mistake. Maybe that changes but he is hardly forcing his way into the field.

Not much, he's played in only 8 games and in only two games has he been on the field for 50% or more snaps (50% in Week 4 and 52% in Week 5).

He's a backup. And a cheap one.

Connelly's year doesn't indicate it was a mistake, but Downs' play does!

Huh? He's literally only played 1 defensive snap this season. He has played on special teams for the Vikes, but based on the breakdown, he's likely only on certain units (e.g. I'm guessing he's not on the FG units). He's consistently played 40-50% of ST snaps with week 9 against the Lions the exception (only 21% that game), but the Vikes only punted 3 times all game and the Lions twice.
But. But...
.McL. : 11/24/2020 2:36 pm : link
I was assured on here that he would come back just as good as before. Possibly even better!

I was told over and over about how tearing the ACL is no big deal anymore and it doesn't affect future performance.

I thought it was interesting. Looks like he has only suited up twice. I was surprised and upset a little when we let him go but always figure the coaches know better than the fans. Seems like they were right. I am not knocking the player - or anyone here. It just seemed interesting.
It’s a shame,
darren in pdx : 11/24/2020 5:03 pm : link
my guess is the team realised he wasn’t fully back from the injury and wasn’t going to use a roster spot to see if ever would.
I loved the guy, but see why we cut him
Zeke's Alibi : 11/24/2020 6:36 pm : link
1 -He was going to be a non factor this year
2- He was made redundant with the Martinez signing. They were probably hoping one of these guys could be the guy that covers the deep middle of the field. That isn't Connely. Attacking downhill LB.

He's not a backup LB, he's a fringe ST player who will be out of the league next year.
I think that many fans, myself included
Jay on the Island : 11/24/2020 8:30 pm : link
Overrated Connelly a bit last season. I also think that his knee injury affected his play significantly. Some players don’t make it back from serious knee injuries.

You can’t tell me that Connelly pre-injury was a worse player than Devante Downs or Mayo.

I think Giant fans are thirsting for anybody who can show anything at LB, even if it’s for a few quarters. They start extrapolating that over a period of time and think the team has found an annual starter.

I don’t think so. I rewatched the game and wrote up a pretty extensive game review on the opener with Dallas. He was our best player, fairly explosive guy, with good instincts. The problem is he’s limited. You need him playing downhill. Coming off his ACL I’d imagine is lateral ability is non existent right now. I could see him bouncing back and becoming a decent starter down the line.
The Vikings have some of the best LB

I'm sure it's a combination. It varies from player to player, injury to injury but you have to figure it's two seasons for most players to get back to where they were before an ACL injury, if they get back at all. I liked him and wish him well for sure... but as soon as he went down I figured that's likely his career. Look at Jonathan Goff, good player but never was able to overcome knee injuries.
